WE DID IT!!
This Kickstarter has been incredibly successful thanks to an amazing group of backers and the cosplay community! This has been an incredible ride, but funding is just the first step and now we’re rolling up our sleeves for the next stage in building the first Cosmakerspace. All of you made this possible!

“This is a great campaign that, I believe, is truly focused on the spirit of the cosplay and DIY communities.” - Brian McLaughlin, for GeekDad
“Wouldn’t it be nice to be able to create your first cosplay costume, or enhance your skills with top-of-the-line tools and materials; and to be able to talk and have fun with likeminded cosplayers while building your next project?” -Medieval Dragon, for World of Warcraft News and BlizzPlanet
“Cosplay is a specific kind of making and needs a specific kind of space. By building it and creating community around it, I can’t wait to see the next level of cosplay emerge.” -Samantha Cook, for GeekMom
Studio Cosplay is changing the world of cosplay and makerspaces by creating the first ever community-operated workspace designed specifically for cosplayers! The "Cosmakerspace" will be a place where costumers have access to the right tools and equipment and can exchange ideas while collaborating on projects. We will host on-site instructional classes and hands-on workshops for members to expand their skills. We welcome cosplayers, costume designers, LARPers, photographers, artists, and anyone interested in learning about costuming.
A community space like this is needed because creating a costume in a confined space is frustrating. It can smother your creativity and cause you to make mistakes or force you to cope with taking out an elaborate element of your costume or prop because you just don't have the resources to bring your imagination to life. In DC, like most metropolitan areas, space is at a premium. Most people don’t have the luxury of garages or workshops in their homes.
A Makerspace is a community-operated workspace where people with interests in computers, machining, technology, science, digital art or electronic art, can meet, socialize and collaborate.
Unlike other Makerspaces, we cater to costumers. Our Cosmakerspace will have multiple stations specifically for designing and constructing costumes, fabricating armor, and creating props. These stations will include sewing, painting, fabricating, wig styling, and 3D printing. Studio Cosplay will offer all levels of classes for students to improve their costuming skills. We will have a green screen for taking pictures of finished costumes or for meeting up with photographers for photoshoots. Studio Cosplay is creating an environment to make cosplayers' lives easier.
We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the support we’ve received for this project so far! As an extra thank you, we’re sending all of our wonderful backers a sticker of our mascot, Notion, when we fund!
We have established ourselves as a 501(c)(3) Non-profit organization, Studio Cosplay Inc, to administer the workshop. Our $24,000 Kickstarter goal directly funds start-up costs and operating expenses for one year. Most of this will go to rent, utilities, and deposits for a 1000+ square foot studio in the Washington, DC Metro area. The remaining funds will go towards purchasing equipment and paying Kickstarter fees. To meet the needs of interested cosplayers and to fund subsequent years of operation the organization will offer multiple cosmakerspace membership tiers. For pricing and membership information please visit our website.
We've toured spaces of various size and location from Falls Church, VA to Rockville, MD. Where we end up will be determined by this Kickstarter. Our ideal location will be Metro accessible, inside the DC I-495 Beltway, and large enough to house all our stations and classes comfortably.
With this Kickstarter, we have budgeted for basic supplies: safety equipment, sewing machines, a dress form, a serger, a ventilated paint area, wig stands, basic fabricating tools (including heat guns and a Dremel set), one 3D printer and a basic photography set up (including a green screen). We would like to do so much more and hope that with stretch goals and donations we will be able to get many of the additional items we need.
We hope our cosmakerspace will serve as a sustainable model that can expand to more areas. The cosplay community is global, so even if you are not from the DC area please help us to succeed and reach your local community.
Thank you to the awesome businesses in the geek and gamer communities that have helped us create this Kickstarter. Contact us at http://www.studiocosplay.org/ for more information and sponsorship opportunities.
Risks and challenges
A potential challenge is ensuring accessibility to a maximum number of members. We will need to find a location that is easy to get to for the entire DC area that will fit within our budget. We hope that we reach some of our stretch goals to ensure we get a large space in a great area. See our FAQ below for more information about locations!
We know that administering this space will be a challenge. Luckily, we have two program managers, a human resources specialist and a real estate investment manager on our board. We have the combined experience to make this a success.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
