Final stretch goal and Apps add-on

Posted by Leo Borg (Collaborator)

Hi backers,

Thank you for all the fantastic support and great comments! It is only a few days left now :) In todays update we want to tell you about our final stretch goal and a new add-on.

Sierra Madre Games first apps!

It has been in the plans for a while to start making apps versions of the the SMG games. Greenland have been one of the games thought upon as the first one to be implemented. Even though it is early in the process, Phil and all of us feel it is a good thing to offer all you great backers to be the first ones to be part of this journey.

So we have decided to offer you as an add-on of 5 USD to become alpha and beta players of the games. There will be voluntary possibilities to leave feedback on the apps and to be more or less active as a beta tester, but it will also be possible for you to play these versions just for your own delight.

NOTE: these are versions done during development and NOT the final product you are paying for. What you will get is:

  • Alpha and Beta versions of the apps during development for 1 (one) account on iOS or Android.
  • At a price substantially lower that the final versions will cost.
  • Optional possibility to contribute thoughts and bugs-reports to the development team.

And you will be supporting Phil and Sierra Madre Games in this ambition! :) If you want to have the alpha and beta apps on several different accounts (such as if you have an android phone and an iPad at home, or if you want several persons in your family take part) you just add 5 USD per account you want to use.

The date for when this app will be completed is not yet set, however our ambition is to have a first version within coming autumn.

Final stretch goal

After some suggestions from you backers and some discussion with Phil we have decided on the final stretch goal at 220,000 USD. To both games there will be an extra essay included with more in-depth Phil’s thoughts about the game design.

We have also gotten some other comments about the possibility for a larger box to fit both games in. However it is only a couple of days left of the campaign so it is difficult to add this to this campaign without influencing the production time, but we will take it with us for a possibility to offer in the future.

Have a great start of the week :)

Reading my own comment again, I want to make sure not to offend anyone. It's all fine. I just think one shouldn't have to pay for playtesting. I know you wrote one doesn't have to playtest but can just enjoy the app. But it does seem odd to me that you sell the unfinished version of your app to backers as a special offer to them.

Playtest and feedback for free. Preorder the app with a discount. That would make sense to me.

I find the "offer" not quite generous. Playtesting is a service to the publisher in itself. That shouldn't cost anything?

I playtested the Baseball Highlights 2045 app "for free", happily paid around $10 for the final product when I wanted to get the expansions. (Had continued to play the beta version after the app was out.) The app is now down to 5€.

So I don't see the incentive. People who pay $5 now for an unfinished product and give you feedback are funding your product.

Don't get me wrong: That is fair. That is what we do for the board game version in this campaign. But pls don't sell this as a "thank you" to backers.

So I've added $20 to my pledge for the iOS α and ß, and also for one game board. This is my first time performing add-on adjustments on KS. There was no field for indicating the type of add-on. Is that just inferred based on the total or have I missed a step?

Also, fantastic to hear that the essays/manifestos are getting attention. The games speak for themselves of course, but I just love having a handful of Phil's written thoughts packaged with these titles. They always enhance the experience for me.

Also very happy to hear about mobile development. I'd definitely be looking towards Steam (and my beloved GOG for bonus points) release once the groundwork has been laid.

      Exciting times for SMG!

      @Rufino Happy to hear!

@Chris No, due to regulations in the iTunes store/Apple contracts we wont be able to offer the final versions at this point. If you add 5 USD you will be supporting the development and get alpha and beta access during the process of the development of both game apps.

@Rafael This is very encouraging to hear, thank you!

Thanks Phil for the extra essay. I think it is very necessary and useful.

Does that digital version include the full version upon release? It talks about alpha/beta access but doesn't mention if that actually nets you the game upon release.

I really liked the last stretch goal. The thematic and research level of the game is great, reading about it and understanding what was the whole research will be awesome.

    10. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Bruce G No information about minimum OS, but I se no reason to set this bar high. Probably iOS 8 or higher but this is not anything we can promise yet.

    11. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Anna We hope to be able to provide discounts in one or several ways to those who support the apps in alpha and beta, for example to those who put effort in leaving feedbak. In ways similar to what is done in play testing of SMG:s printed games. But we can NOT promise anything in this question at the moment since there are many rules that comes woth iTunes that we have to follow.

    12. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Stefanos Thank you for your feedback. I wrote this in the general comments too. In our experience, and many others, a play tester is much more dedicated and will give mush better feedback when there is a small fee for taking part in an alpha/beta test persiod. And the experience is usually improved for both the developer and the player. It is also not unusual to see early access as a bonus worth som extra and for those who don't want to put time into errror reporting etc it is of course not mandatory. you may just play the apps early for fun. In any case this is just a voluntary addon, if you find it interesting.

    13. Anna Becker

Will it be possible for us to get a discount on the final version, if we support it early now for the alpha and beta version?

    14. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Radu Yes, as you point out it woulr be a lot of text, but in short: We have had 5 app development companies for review and have narrowed it down to two. The final decision is not made yet, so I can not comment on that, but we feel both of these seems capable of doing a good job. The goal is to have a first playable version ready as soon as possible. But this may not be until a few monthe. The work will be done using Scrum so working prototypes will be part of the process. As soon as it is meaningful we want the testers to get to test the app, maybe before summer och maybe just after. And then continuously.

Do you know what the minimum iOS version (and maybe Android) will be for the apps? I hate to pay for the app now only to find out later that it won't run on my iPad. I can't get iOS 11 on mine, so if it'll need 11, then I wouldn't bother with helping.

    16. Stefanos Pallas on

The news about the apps are great but ... paying to become a tester and actually work for their development? It sounds really odd to me ...

    17. Radu P on

Back from the break. Turning an existing game into an app is a lot harder than developing an app from scratch. Who is actually going to do it, why do you think it will work out in the end, what is the road map, including the difficulties you anticipate, and where/when do the testers come in?

A full answer would probably require a new, substantial and exciting update, but I would still enjoy a shorter version, for now.

@SierraMadreGames Understood- thanks... And thanks for all of the great games throughout the years.

    19. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Radu Yes, this is NOT official but I wanted to answer you here anyway. The goal at the moment is to release the apps on Steam too.

      @Jeremy Was wondering that myself...

    21. Sierra Madre Games 3-time creator on

@Jeremy No, due to regulations set by iTunes/Apple we can not sell the final app outside of iTunes. And we can not put it on iTunes until it is ready to be validated. So instead we set this alpha/beta price very low. You will though (probably) be able to keep the beta versions of the app, but we can not promise this. We will not stop you from keeping them but iOS upgrades etc may prevent it. The beta version will not be supported after the release of the real app.

    22. Hans Peter Bak

Oooh! An essay? I like that. :)

    23. Radu P on

You have just made my break. So much cunning in both the stretch goal and the add-on. I love it!

After the Playdeck Twilight Struggle debacle - my very first Kickstarter - left me with a very bitter taste, I will probably pass on being a paying tester, neverthless this is promising news. Are you considering Steam ports as well?

    24. Jeremy Williams on

If we buy access to the alpha and the beta do we also get a full copy upon release?
