About

Èkó Samba Community is a non-profit project based in Lagos, Nigeria which uses creative arts as a tool to engage and empower children and young people. Since January 2011 we have been bringing together kids from diverse backgrounds through Brazilian samba drumming.

After almost 4 years we have finally been given the opportunity to take part in this year's Calabar Carnival in Nigeria - the biggest street carnival in Africa!

We need to raise the funds to enable a group of 15-20 (funds dependent) kids to travel from an inner-city, low-income area of Lagos mainland (west coast of Nigeria) to Calabar (on the east coast Nigeria) for the experience of their lifetime. Your pledge will help us cover costs such as fixing up our drums, sprucing up our costumes and getting to and from the carnival in one piece with food in our bellies and our spirits high in the sky!

With your help, these kids can showcase their artistic abilities at an incredible event and experience the joys of performing at Africa's largest carnival. They will parade alongside and interact with an international community of carnival artists and audiences, developing their skills and keeping them inspired.

With us, truly every little makes all the difference and we welcome pledges of all sizes. Seeing the smiles on these kids faces when they find out they'll be going to the carnival will be truly priceless.

Risks and challenges

Our biggest challenge would be to not raise enough funds to enable a group of 15-20 kids to travel to Calabar. In this event we would use the funds we have raised to take as many kids as possible. We know that giving 5 or 10 children an opportunity to take part in the carnival is better than not giving it to any at all. This is an experience that none of these kids would have dreamed possible 4 years ago - and that's the biggest goal we can achieve, helping them to dream as big as they dare.

Other challenges include:

- The fact that the Carnival takes place over Christmas time which may make parents reluctant to let their children travel. We plan to overcome this challenge by sending out consent forms to parents early on and following up with visits to these parents. We will explain the extent of the opportunity (how hard we have been working to get the kids into the carnival and what it would mean for them) and reassure them that they will still experience all the joys of the festive period and be well looked after.

- The 12-hour journey to Calabar from Lagos could well include unforseen setbacks as travelling in Nigeria is often a challenge in itself (as some of you may know!) We plan to travel with a reputable driver with whom we have travelled before who can navigate unexpected situations, as well as knowledgeable stewards and a great deal of supplies. Collectively we will be as prepared as possible for any setbacks that might arise.
