This Kickstarter is in support of the third and final installment of the Ancient Trails adventure series*.
Ancient Trails has been a free electronic PDF series throughout its existence having been downloaded over 7,000 times so far. This installment will be free as well. So you might ask yourself if this thing is going to be free why the Kickstarter? Well we'd like to provide some of you brave fans the chance to own a physical copy of the book and the chance to help us bring you an even better product.
With your support we can add a few bells and whistles to the adventure. We plan to add these on as stretch goals. Things like original cover art for the book, the secret OSS (Orion State Security) report on Pandora and a set of audio enhancements like those we've done for each of the other two adventures in the series. We have a completed copy of the adventure in hand and mostly edited. It will be released as a free download no matter the outcome of this campaign.
Here are a few tidbits on the adventure.
- It is currently (sans the bells and whistles mentioned above) around 45,000 words long! That's roughly the size of our "Beyond the Open Door" campaign, so this last installment of the series will have some heft.
- The adventure describes three separate adventure locales and provides plenty of room for referees to create their own to supplement this adventure or continue it.
- As you can image at 45,000 words, it will probably require multiple gaming sessions to complete.
- The adventure centers on the "Alien Contact" theme with strong "Horror in Space" overtones.
The following are the two options the backers will choose from for the appendix that will appear only in the backer's versions of the book. Right now they are; Vacc Suits, Space and Zero-G and a Referee's Guide.
We are also open to nominations from the floor for a backers only appendix.
Since so much of this adventure takes place in space, we thought some notes and rules on operating in the unforgiving vacuum of space would be helpful. This appendix would be sort of a mini version of our upcoming Six Guns Vacc Suits book. So it should be a good appetizer to get you ready for that.
The Referee's Guide would include some very helpful suggestions on presenting the adventure. It would be something of a primer on running an adventure in space with the emphasis on horror.
With over 7,000 downloads in this series so far, we know a lot of you are familiar (or can quickly become so by downloading the first two installments So it begins and Witness to History for free) with Ancient Trails. We'd like to ask you to help us bring it to light as never before through this Kickstarter project.
We'd like to thank those of you who supported our previous Kickstarters and we hope you'll be with us again on this one. The Kickstarter process for a small publisher like Terra/Sol is the perfect way for us to bring products to market and make them as good as we want them to be. I hope you agree and we can earn your support.
*Please note that we have several adventures in development that while technically not directly related to the Ancient Trails series, take advantage of the settings developed in or use the background created by the Ancient Trails series!
PS: In the likely event that I've failed to cover something, please contact me with any questions.
This project is brought to you by Terra/Sol Games and is intended for use with the Twilight Sector Campaign Setting.
Risks and challenges
Listing the risks we could face in this campaign.
1) Delivering the adventure.
This risk has largely been addressed before we launched, as the adventure is complete with only a few editing tasks and completing any stretch goals we manage to hit left to be completed. As I mentioned in the description above, the adventure will be released regardless of the outcome of this Kickstarter.
2) Delays in delivering the adventure.
Those that backed our previous Kickstarter know that there were delays in delivering that book. Unfortunately those were largely due to our extreme misfortune in the untimely passing of our Line Editor. I've come to believe though that those are the types of risks that this section is meant to address so I will.
I have taken on the role of Line Editor for this book. I'm in good health having gone through a battery of tests this last year and come through with flying colors. That notwithstanding I've also pushed out our delivery date to May of 2017 to account for any unexpected occurrences. I expect to deliver the book long before then. In fact I hope to have it delivered before the end of the year but I want to build in a cushion in case anything unexpected happens again.
