About this project
If we reach £16,000 all backers can choose to have 'Special Edition' laser etched on the back of their Comb instead of 'Made in England' at no extra cost. This option will not be available anywhere else.
It's a BIG Thank You to all the people who back the campaign, so everyone will know your comb is one of the first ever made.
This new goal also enables me to produce the Combs in the most efficient way, so if we can get there it's a win-win.
My goal was simple, to design the right comb for a man.
A comb for your hair? The concept's been around for a while, I know, but growing a beard can be a step into the unknown. If you’re not into male grooming there’s a good chance you’ll hit the ‘Drifter’ stage and need some help.
The Man Comb enables you to own your beard and barnet, so even if you’re as hairy as a Yeti’s armpit you can look and feel magnificent! Waxed chests and pretty boys were big in the noughties but it’s the hairy man's time to shine, so step into the spotlight my furry brothers, with the wind in your beard and a beer in your hand!
This project turned out to be no small task but the story is bigger than one product.
In brief, it’s my mission to combine years of design experience with modern technology and traditional skills, to create products in new ways. The Man Comb combines a wide range of design disciplines with advanced manufacturing - 3D Printing, Laser Cutting and state-of-the-art Injection Molding. I've spent years teaching myself, and refining this process, because I believe these technologies can break down the barriers of producing commercial products and give the individual control of the whole process. It means the designer/maker has the freedom to not only express their own sense of design but actually create the products themselves.
For me, these products, along with crowd-funding, signify the dawn of a new age where indy manufacturers can take on the big boys, and take things forward... but I’m not taking anyone anywhere without your help.
I'm not selling a story, my aim is to create products which are good enough to sell themselves.
Made Tough - The handle is made from stainless steel so it doesn’t corrode, and the brushed finish keeps it looking fresh. The graphics are laser etched into the steel so they won’t fade or rub off.
The comb aspect was designed and refined by testing lots of 3D printed prototypes. That enabled me to find the optimum dimensions for strength. The final comb material is ridiculously tough, in fact it’s made from similar stuff to airplane windshields! It’s not technically ‘bullet proof’ but you could probably fire a chicken at it - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_gun
Compact & Practical - A man-sized comb that fits in your pocket. Packed tight but without squeezing on form or function. The right size for your back pocket, with the option to attach on a keychain (or similar)!
Bottle Opener – An integral part of the design. The Man Comb is designed around its functions so it’s ergonomic and satisfying to use.
Magnetic Catch – I've tested these products throughout the development to make sure they are built to last. A fixed, pivot comb would become loose over time, which isn't acceptable. I fitted these with a magnet which holds the comb in the open and closed positions, so there's no need to adjust the tightness.
The Man Comb Straight-up, no frills, just packed with awesome!
The Man Comb with Handmade Leather Case. Everyone bangs on about the case so I'd recommend it.
The case is made from hardy, tan leather with brass fittings. It protects the comb and can slide onto your belt.
NEW COMB DESIGN WITH YOUR INITIALS
Here's a new limited Comb reward. Have your initials laser etched on the handle replacing the 'Man Comb' logo. Just 15 of these availible at this price!
(This shows my initials and is a mock-up design. All other pictures are of actual combs)

Scotty 'Doorstop & Book-End'
- the first DAFT® product.
Available in the UK for the first time through this campaign. I made these puppies while living in New York last year. They sold out in the shops and made it onto the coolhunting.com gift guide. These are the last few remaining and they're only available through the campaign, so snap 'em up!
Available in - Scottie Black, Schnauzer Grey & Westie White. Click on image for more info.
I’m with DAFT® (double sided) or ‘From DRIFTER to HIPSTER’ breakfast mugs! Probably the best way to start your day.
I've spent hundreds of hours designing and testing the production processes. The next part is relatively simple. I need money to pay for the final tooling for the molded comb and to facilitate scaling-up the handle production.
The funding goal is set to just 9k, because that's the minimum I need, along with my own investment, to produce the first batch of combs.
I have some fantastic partners lined up to help me produce the different aspects of this product. All the right people are in place and I have every confidence they'll deliver the product on schedule and to the standard we require. We’ve already successfully tested the injection molding process, so we’re good to go!
I’ve also been through this process before with our ‘Scotty’ product, so I can accurately predict the timeline with confidence.
August/September : Finalise production design depending on the achieved funding.
October : Press ‘Go’ on the Combs and produce all the other aspects of the product.
November : Assemble, quality control, pack and start to ship.
December : Get them in your hands in time for Christmas!
Risks and challenges
I have thoroughly tested all the processes involved in the manufacturing of this product. The comb will be made using the same techniques I have refined in creating these prototypes, with contingency plans in place to deal with high demand.
Scaling up production will be the biggest challenge. The focus will be on consistency and maintaining the same attention to detail while establishing the most efficient manufacturing and assembly systems. For this, I have some excellent partners who are raring to go.
All conceivable issues have been addressed and the costs are meticulously calculated, so the risks are as minimal as they are going to get on a project like this.
That said, I’m sure it’s still going to be an exciting ride and I’ll look forward to updating you at regular points on our journey.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
