About

Whether it’s a temporary need or a long-term condition, dealing with restricted mobility should be painfree. We've focused our energy on revolutionizing crutches because we believe that they should improve the user's quality of life, functionally and emotionally.

We set out to design a better crutch, one that improved on what we saw as the greatest problems with under arm crutches and forearm crutches.

The M+D Crutch is designed around a simple premise: Elbows, not armpits.

 FEATURE DETAILS

Flexible Arm Bands
Flexible Arm Bands

Each M+D Crutch has two flexible armbands that hold them to the user’s arm without strapping them down or locking them in. Their curved design and material allows the user to pull out their forearms easily, but holds them in place when using the M+D Crutches in hands free mode. The flexible arm straps can be placed together on either side of the arm cradle, or on opposite sides, and can be easily moved along the length of the cradle to fit the user’s personal preference. Moving the flexible arm straps is an easy process that requires no tools.

Interchangeable Feet
Interchangeable Feet

The M+D Crutch comes with a standard foot designed to absorb some of the shock of each step. The tread and material flexibility allow the crutch's foot to conform to the ground and grip it to prevent slipping. The standard foot can be easily removed and replaced with other feet designed for various terrains and activities. Alternate feet will be available in the future.

Hands Free Walking
Hands Free Walking

A button on the hand-grip unlocks the handle and allows the user to adjust its length and rotate it away from their hands and start using the M+D Crutches in hands-free mode.

Hinged Arm Support
Hinged Arm Support

A sliding button under the arm cradle unlocks the cradle allowing it to click in and out of the main body to allow users to lift their arms while still wearing the crutches. The cradle can also be locked to remain in place while using it hands free.

Don't you wish you'd had M+D crutches? Countless others still need crutches and you might need them again.

By becoming a backer you can help us re-imagine the crutch for the millions of people that need painfree mobility. There are lots of backer levels. Every level comes with a reward for the backer, and will help get a set of M+D Crutches for someone who needs them now.

We have teamed up with some great organizations doing wonderful work to help people. Your backing will help get M+D Crutches, through these organizations, to people who need them the most.

Throughout the process we've had traditional crutch users try our prototypes to test the functionality and comfort of our design. Here's what they had to say about the M+D Crutches:

"Traditional crutches haven't really solved the problem of the overbearing weight on certain pressure points after extended use. It seems like most people can only tolerate them after making modifications. For me, it was the weight on my hands. Buying extra pads extended the comfort for a bit, but didn't solve the problem. These crutches have considered a lot of these sorts of problems. You move with them in a different way, using different muscles, but you have more range of motion, and a lot less chance of getting sore. I would definitely recommend them, especially if you want extended mobility." -Darren K. (used during recovery after knee surgery)

"With these crutches my wrists and shoulders aren't as fatigued. With this crutch design everyday tasks are much easier. I walk much farther and easier without getting tired using these crutches." -Dan Y. (above the knee amputee, uses crutches every day for a few hours)

"I've been using forearm crutches my entire life and have the the wrist, back, and shoulder problems to show for it. I could tell an immediate difference from the moment I tried the M+D Crutches, and can't wait to test them some more!" -John D.

The Problem with traditional crutches:

"The hand placement works for some, not all. There is no real adjustability to customize for the patient, other than height. Nerve damage can occur through the axilla (armpit) when used improperly. This is known as a compression neuropathy, or nerve compression syndrome. The symptoms include numbness, pain, and muscle weakness The single type of bottom is not designed for multiple surfaces. It can easily slip on low-friction surfaces. Skin and soft tissue abrasions occur through the chest wall and axilla when rubbing for long periods of time. (again related to improper use)."- Julie E., DPT (Physical Therapist)

We are a small but very capable team, with many years of experience developing consumer product and medical devices.

Through the past few years we've gone through multiple designs and hundreds of prototypes. We've tested, tweaked, failed, tried again, and tested again. It's been a long and fun process, and now the M+D Crutch is ready to support lots of elbows!

Along the way we have worked with some great companies and people who have helped us make our dream a reality.

UMKC and the Regnier Institute have helped us turn our idea into a business venture through the E-Scholars Program and a 1st place award for their annual Venture Creation Challenge.

We’ve taken this idea as far as we could, poured every cent we had and taken on a few generous believers as investors. Our injection molding tools are the largest expense, and we have secured the funds to finish tooling early next year. Now we need your help to back our first production run!

It's an exciting time for our company and our family. Thank you for being a part of our journey!

Please share with everyone you know! You never know when someone may need a little help. These things happen all the time, and one of your friends may be in that precise spot right now, or might in the future, and we want to be there to help them through their recovery. Share with everyone you know and help us reach everyone out there who would be happy to know we exist. Happy armpits everywhere will thank you!

Risks and challenges

As many of you know, product development is not a linear process. We have gone through multiple iterations of our design and have worked tirelessly to solve all foreseeable issues. However, there are always potential issues to resolve when reaching final stages in the development process. There is the potential that our timeline will be affected by a number of factors outside our direct control. We are using highly competent US manufacturers to produce each part of our product, however, our design calls for large plastic components that have an inherent molding complexity. We are working with our manufacturers to ease their job without compromising the design. This process has the potential to take longer than we anticipate, but it is not impossible. Please do not be disheartened if our timeline is extended slightly, we have a highly experienced engineering team behind the development of this product.
