Ardhat embeds an Arduino compatible processor, so it responds quickly to real time events, and lets the Raspberry Pi get on with the heavy lifting.
It accepts nearly all Arduino shields, which gives you access to an unmatched range of real world hardware.
And Ardhat can sense the world around it. The Basic Ardhat has analogue sensors, Real Time Clock, User Interface controls, and supply monitoring, all accessible from either the Raspberry Pi or Ardhat processor.
If you need more, Ardhat-I adds a 10-DOF Inertial Management Unit, and Ardhat-W adds a Long Range ISM wireless node with up to 15km range, so Ardhat is IoT ready out of the box.
Ardhat’s smart power management includes a power switch and charge control, and lets a Raspberry Pi run on real world power supplies, like automotive or LiPo batteries, for months.
And since many of the things we makers want to connect to are 5 volt systems, like servos, quadcopters and ‘SmartLED’s, Ardhat is also 5 volt so it speaks their language, and includes a beefy 5 volt supply to drive them.

Not only does Ardhat protect the Raspberry Pi from external voltage spikes and outages, but there's physical protection too. With the optional laser-cut perspex 'TopHat' that fits the PiBow enclosure, you get access to Arduino shield pins for experimenting and teaching purposes, without the danger of damage to the exposed pins of the Raspberry Pi circuit board.
Ardhat is available with a tailored high-capacity 2050mAh battery, that plugs into the standard JST connector and fits snugly between the shield headers of the FlatTop board design.
But you can fit the LiPo battery of your choice, or even a micro-prototyping board in its place!
And with a second processor to power manage the system, you can operate with solar cells, even small ones that ordinarily would not be sufficient for use with a Raspberry Pi.
Whatever you choose, the on-board Arduino compatible processor monitors internal and external supply voltages and is ready to act immediately to protect the Raspberry Pi from power outages. (Raspberry Pi can also monitor the supplies through the Arduino Firmata interface).

IoT and Robotics
Ardhat means more than integrated hardware; it means integrated software too.
Johnny-Five takes its name from the star of the cult classic Short Circuit, and is an Open Source, Firmata Protocol based, IoT and Robotics programming framework, developed at Bocoup.
Ardhat’s real-time scheduler and apps are open source, and are hosted on Ardhat's open GitHub community repository.
The Ardhat Real-Time is supplied as a preloaded sketch that includes a co-operative multitasking scheduler and utility functions, which can be modified as required using the Arduino IDE. It uses ~2kB of Arduino program space.
The basic functions planned for the first release of Ardhat include:

Ardhat comes in 4 versions, 2 without long-range radio modules, and 2 with.
All Ardhats have the same integrated Real-Time processor and Real World connectivity options, such as Analog I/O, 5V Arduino Shield capability, wide operating voltage range (including automotive) and high current outputs for driving peripherals.
All Ardhats have full power/sleep management and Real-Time Clock to keep your Raspberry Pi data secure, no matter what.
And all Ardhat models share the same 'FlatTop' design (a tailored 1800mAh LiPo battery that fits snugly between the shield headers is available if you want to maximise energy density).
For maximum flexibility, Ardhat is supplied without soldered headers for use in space and weight constrained environments such as drones and space shots!

At ubIQio we're all about Open Source projects - we have no marketing people, no marketing budget, and we don't use any dirty tricks to get people's attention - we just rely on word of mouth - so please help us spread the word!
Risks and challenges
We have 3rd generation prototypes assembled and tested, and they are performing really well. We do need to make a few low-risk tweaks for production, but have component sourcing and manufacturing capacity arranged. Our team is experienced in the issues of design for manufacture, PCB fabrication, assembly and test, having many years of experience at an international level.
We have 3D printed prototypes of our custom covers which will be laser-cut, but this a low-risk item. Also considered low-risk is the ability to source LiPo batteries and radio modules in volume.
We believe Ardhat will have world-wide appeal, but want to make sure we can fulfil our commitments to our backers, and international LiPo battery shipments can really slow down delivery times. So although rewards without LiPo batteries are available worldwide, those with LiPo are only shipping to USA and European Union countries at this time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
