About this project
"Highway 61 begins about where I came from, Duluth, to be exact. I always felt like I'd started on it, always had been on it, and could go anywhere from it." -Bob Dylan*
"Bob Dylan is rightfully regarded as one of the world’s most important artists of the last 50 years. I support this project as a way for our city to recognize our most accomplished native son and to celebrate Duluth’s authentic arts and music ethos, inspired by the place we call home.” - Duluth Mayor Don Ness
Over a year in the making, the Dylan by Duluth concept is meant to be not only a tribute to modern times' most prominent songwriter, author, painter, radio host, and all-around mystic, but also as a dedication to his fans world-wide.
The Dylan by Duluth Creative Team includes a number of individuals helmed by sculptor Tom Page, an experienced artist of many large-scale projects. Donate now to become a part of Dylan's legend and join the Team!
Below is a scale model of the sculpture that Tom has created to give prospective givers an idea of the final piece. The image of the scale model below gives you an idea of what the finished product will look like. (Note the lyrics or song titles that will be used in his coat, which is blowing in the wind.) The tribute is meant to capture Dylan in his earlier years, as he steps out of the Iron Range and onto the world stage.
The final bronze sculpture will stand approximately 12 feet 6 inches (about 4 meters) tall with the base. When you visit the final tribute, you will not likely stand much taller than Dylan's knees!
The sculpture will rest on two circular bases. On the outer ring of the top base will be bronze nameplates of each of Bob Dylan's thirty-five studio albums. The bronze plates will include the title of each of Dylan's studio albums and the title of each track on the album. See the Bootleg Level of giving below to have your name associated with one of these albums.
On the outer ring of the bottom base will be bronze plates with the engraved names of each person who donates at the Don't Think Twice, It's Alright Level (see below). The upper ring of the bottom base will be a bronze plate representing each of Dylan's studio albums and the track listing for each. Those donating at the Bootleg Level can have their name engraved next to their album of choice (see below).
FREEWHEELIN' Level. $4.00: Commemorative Ticket to the public unveiling.
Although the unveiling of the sculpture will be free and open to the public, fans at the Freewheelin' Level will receive an official Dylan by Duluth ticket to the event, along with a gracious thanks from the sculptor. Bring the ticket to the final sculpture's unveiling, get it framed, or use it as a bookmark!
How it works: After the project is funded, we will ask you for your mailing address, and we'll send the ticket right away!
TANGLED UP IN BLUE Level. $25.00: Dylan by Duluth Guitar Picks:
Those who give at the Tangled Up in Blue level will receive three colored guitar picks with the Dylan by Duluth logo. The Tangled Up in Blue Level also includes a commemorative ticket to the tribute's unveiling, signed by the artist at your request!
How it works: After the project is fully backed, we will ask you for your mailing address, and we'll send the ticket and guitar picks right away!
GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY Level. $50.00: Dylan by Duluth Hat:
Those who give at the Girl from the North Country Level will receive a stylish, official Dylan by Duluth baseball cap, pictured below. The Dylan by Duluth logo will be embroidered on the cotton adjustable hat, as shown below. A sure conversation starter, expect nods from people passing you on the street knowing that you're "in the know."
How it works: After the project is fully backed, we will ask you for your mailing address, and we'll send your hat as soon as its embroidered!
DON'T THINK TWICE, IT'S ALRIGHT Level. $75.00: Name Engraving:
Your name will become a part of Dylan's legacy when it is engraved on a series of bronze plaques that surround the sculpture. When you visit the tribute, you can see your name in bronze. Become a part of his legacy! Donors at the Don't Think Twice, It's Alright Level will also receive a Dylan by Duluth commemorative ticket.
We hope that the Don't Think Twice, It's Alright Level will be the most popular, as it will give true ownership of the bronze tribute to Dylan fans around the world.
How it works: After the project is fully backed, we will send you an online questionnaire, where you can tell us how you would like your name portrayed. You could also give at this level and submit your spouse's name, best friend's name, or your own nickname. This level of giving makes for a unique, once-in-a-lifetime present for a birthday or the holidays!
HURRICANE Level. $119.00: All of the above.
Those giving at the Hurricane Level will receive their name engraved in the tribute, a Dylan by Duluth hat, three Dylan by Duluth guitar picks, and a commemorative ticket to the tribute's unveiling.
LIKE A ROLLING STONE LEVEL. $1,000.00: Personal Scale Replica of the Dylan by Duluth Sculpture:
Add to your personal collection by bringing the Dylan by Duluth project home. Give at this level and receive a scaled model sculpture of the actual project, approximately 18 to 24 inches tall. (See how it will look HERE.) Each piece will be cast in resin by the sculptor himself and will be series numbered. The Like A Rolling Stone level includes a commemorative ticket to the unveiling, three Dylan by Duluth guitar picks, a Dylan by Duluth hat, and your name engraved in the contributors' circle.
How it works: After the project is fully backed, the artist will first need to complete the full sculpture. Once the sculpture is completed, the artist will begin work on casting these scale models. While we hope to have them mailed by the time the tribute is installed in Duluth, this date could be delayed if the number of donors at this level exceeds expectations.
BOOTLEG Level. $1,500.00: Sponsor a Dylan Album Plaque.
Bob Dylan has released 35 studio albums, and the tribute will include bronze plaques for each of them, directly at the base of the sculpture. By giving at the Bootleg Level, you can sponsor one of these albums. Imagine having your name at the base of the sculpture as the sponsor of HIghway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, Nashville Skyline, or any of his other studio albums! The Bootleg Level includes a commemorative ticket to the unveiling, three Dylan by Duluth guitar picks, and a Dylan by Duluth hat.
How it works: After the project is fully backed, we will send you an online questionnaire, where you can tell us how you would like your name portrayed AND which album you'd like to sponsor.
Pick from the following albums: Bob Dylan, The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, The Times They Are a-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan, Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, Blonde on Blonde, John Wesley Harding, Nashville Skyline, Self Portrait, New Morning, Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, Dylan, Planet Waves, Blood on the Tracks, The Basement Tapes, Desire, Street Legal, Slow Train Coming, Saved, Shot of Love, Infidels, Empire Burlesque, Knocked Out Loaded, Down in the Groove, Oh Mercy, Under the Red Sky, Good as I Been to You, World Gone Wrong, Time Out of Mind, Love and Theft, Modern Times, Together Through Life, Christmas in the Heart, Tempest.
Our team hopes to have the fundraising completed by the end of this summer. Because snow covers Duluth every winter, the installation of the bronze tribute will likely be done in the Spring or Summer of 2014. We are trying to arrange for an unveiling on May 24, 2014, Dylan's 73rd birthday!
About the Artist and the Creative Team
The engine driving the Dylan by Duluth Creative Team is sculptor Tom Page. Tom is a graduate of the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. The Mayor and The City
Duluth Mayor Don Ness is a supporter of this Kickstarter project. Don has been a strong supporter of the arts in Duluth. Before becoming mayor, Don was festival director for Homegrown Music Festival, a founding member of Duluth’s Dylan Days, and led the effort to establish Dylan Way, a cultural pathway through downtown Duluth. Mayor Ness was kind enough to meet with the team, and even kinder to offer his words of support:
"Duluth is a very different city than it was when Bob Dylan was born here in 1941. But many things remain the same – the hill, the Lake, the natural beauty, and a real unique and authentic spirit of the people who choose to live here. Obviously Bob Dylan is rightfully regarded as one of the world’s most important artists of the last 50 years. I support this project as a way for our city to recognize our most accomplished native son and to celebrate Duluth’s authentic arts and music ethos, inspired by the place we call home.” - Mayor Don Ness
From what we can tell, this is the first Kickstarter project to receive an official endorsement from a public official. Don Ness has been the mayor of Duluth, Minnesota since 2007. He is well known for his attempts to bring Google Fiber to his dear city, his crowd-surfing with Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak at Trampled by Turtles concerts, and his official spoof of PSY's Gangnam Style video.

Risks and challenges
This project is more ambitious than the typical Kickstarter project, both in the scope of fundraising and in the installation of such a large piece. Nonetheless, we believe that the enthusiasm and fan base exists to fund such a project. We have spent the last few months preparing a Bob Dylan blitz through traditional media outlets. We are also attempting to maximize exposure to social media by using online tools like Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, Reddit, and Google Plus.
Our team has also been working closely with Duluth Mayor Don Ness. He has provided wonderful advice as far as securing a location within Duluth and has connected us with a number of local individuals that will be crucial in local promotion and installation of the finished piece.
Tom is an artist with over forty years of sculpting experience. In addition to the work above, you can also view some of his prior work on the biography page on the upper right.
Distribution of the Rewards will be a major undertaking, and we have a number of people working on this front. There will likely be many questions, and we will work diligently to keep open lines of communication with all of those who contact the team. You will get the fastest response if you e-mail us: DylanByDuluth@gmail.com. We will post a FAQ once people begin to ask questions. And check back regularly for updates!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
