In the end we will make the film set in the world of football hooligans, politics and organized crime. We will tell you the true story of "Heroes" and "Gravediggers" - the ultras of Red Star and Partizan Belgrade.
Now we are about to make a short intro for the project. An introduction and more than that. If you have never seen the "Eternal Derby" you don't know yet what an image we're dealing with here. The smoke, the coreography, the brutal spectacle, the atmosphere of this match is unique in more than one way.
The two biggest teams of Belgrade are eternal rivals and it is the 150th time they meet in their history. A history not only and not so much of football but of smoke. Smoke covering activities that are unknown even to those who have seen Crvena Zvezda (Red Star) win the European Champions Cup in 1991 or who know who were Arkan's Tigers. There is so much more to this derby than football - the match is just where our story begins. Before we can unveil what's in behind the curtains we have to show you the magnificent façade.
WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT
This campaign is only to support our venture on the derby day. We need to make serious preparations as the opportunity to start this exclusive documentary with scenes from the 150th derby is unique. This is where the real story starts. Our small international team will stay in Belgrade for a couple of days before match-day to scout for key characters, personal stories and to grasp and bring you the thick atmosphere that surrounds the eternal derby.
This scene cannot wait and can not be missed if we are to finish our project. We need to be ensured. We need to be safe. We use expensive equipment. We need some contacts and some protection. We will stay in Belgrade for a few days before and after the match to establish first contact with key figures of the story - heroes and gravediggers. We don't ask for much because we have some resources of our own as well, yet the contribution from Kickstarter would be priceless. It would show that you are interested and that is what counts most. If we are to develop this project to full extent we gotta have your support to show for it!
A GLIMPSE ON THE (HI-)STORY
It is known that many of Arkan's (in-)famous Tigers, some of them charged in the Hague for war-crimes,had been often seen in the Marakana Stadium. The film's goal is to investigate whether the ties between the mafia and the hooligans remained as solid as they were during the times of the civil war in Yugoslavia. Corruption is rampant in Serbia so perhaps it's not too daring an assumption that the government also plays a role. Is it still the way it used to be in the 90's and the 2000's revolution when the hooligans were used for political purposes? This story has never been recounted on film.
Risks and challenges
We will be talking to dangerous people. The subject of this film is a group of people known to be extremely violent and very well connected.
The crew has some crucial expertise on the field and has worked in hostile environments before. We are not aliens to stadiums either, yet we admit we are aware that some situations awaiting us are going to be challenging no matter what. However we need to be safe from all other sides. We have to have certain background to be ensured from all aspects.
PS.: The project does not depend, but it is counting on other sources, media publications of different written, photographic and video material legated to the project.
