***WOW! Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal! We are completely flawed and thrilled that we have incredible people like you who have contributed to our project***
Please feel free to keep giving! If we raise $4000, we can afford all of our post-production and festival admissions costs!
My name is Izzy Stevens, I am the Director/Producer/Writer of this film.
Last year, this idea started repeating itself in my dreams, most nights, for a series of weeks. When the idea began to bother me during the day, I realised I had to give it a time and a space to develop, I wanted to understand what it was trying to tell me. (Do your ideas talk to you too or is this a significant red flag?) I’m fine though.
So! Let us chat to you about this wild idea, and if you’re a little, or perhaps a lot intrigued, then maybe you are generously inclined to give a little bit of love our way? Let us make a film for you! We really want to, and we think you’re so cool, you deserve it. Plus you will probably feel so good about giving a little of your money to a great cause, so it would make both of our dreams come true. Plus we have some amazing rewards to provoke your interest (we hope). —————>
What is your film ABOUT though?!
Phenomena is a surreal narrative rooted in reality, it explores the relationships between trauma, our identity, and young sexuality.
This short film is about a state of conflict occurring within Emma’s subconscious, and the struggle to reconcile what is ‘real’ in her life. Emma is our protagonist, a young woman, a university student who lives in the suburbs with her parents. She begins to see a second version of herself. As the puzzle unfolds itself, we finally come to understand that something significant has occurred to cause this fracturing. The mystery plays out until the films final reveal, but it begs the question: how far will the mind go to protect itself?
There is only so much we can tell you about this bad boy, mostly because it is only a 6 minute short film so the more we say the less you get to discover, and also, it is all mysterious and psychological-thillery, and we’d like to keep it that way until you watch it! So let us tell you a little about our amazing team:
Raechelle Banno has over ten years of experience as an actor, writer, and dancer. Represented in both Australia and Los Angeles; her acting credits include Southern Star’s In Your Dreams’ and her first short film Exposure was accepted into the 2014 Port Stephen’s Film Festival. Raechelle can currently be seen on Channel Seven’s Home and Away in the ongoing role of Olivia.
Karina Banno has over 10 years of experience as an actor and director. Represented in both Australia and Los Angeles; her acting credits include Melbourne International Film Festival selection 'Love Song Devotions' and 2013's 'Circle of Lies' where Karina was apart of the main ensemble cast. Karina will be appearing in ABC's special event drama The Easybeats later in 2017.
Izzy is a Sydney based actor, writer, and director. At 17, Izzy signed with talent agency Random Management and a month later, landed a lead role on Australian television series Underbelly Razor. From Underbelly, Izzy went on to land the role of Tracey Smart on Aussie TV show Puberty Blues. In 2015, Izzy wrote and directed her debut short film Placidyl, a quirky, surrealist style film which was later chosen for Cinema Australia’s Sunday Shorts program. In 2017, Izzy landed her first feature film role on Luke Sparke’s action/sci fi flick Occupation. The film's trailer played at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, garnering international interest.
Meg Ham is a director, film producer and writer and has experience across multi platform media. In 2017 alone, Meg finished a run as an Associate Producer on reality TV show Hell's Kitchen, going on to work for The Editors, Sydney. Meg has extensive experience in both production and post production.
So where will your money go?!
Equipment Costs: Most of our budget will be invested in obtaining high quality camera equipment to make the film look as slick and visually spectacular as possible.
Costume and Set Dressing: We must invest in our set dressings and costume design in order to visually create the authentic world of Emma.
Catering: Food for survival.
Locations: We have three main locations for this film, and the generous humans who allow us to use those spaces require a little slice of monetary compensation too.
Kickstarter: So as we can use their brilliant program and reach out to you fine folk.
We must be particularly strict with where our money goes, there is little room to play within this budget as we have attempted to make our requirements as minimal as possible. We also have not included our post-production costs (which will be out of pocket), so this is the ultimate minimum we would need to simply get the film shot.
Risks and challenges
As with every project, Phenomena comes with it's own individual set of risks and challenges. We are on an extremely tight budget for what we are looking to achieve, and our schedule is particularly compact.
As we are shooting over just two and a half days, we will need to be incredibly organised and very time conscious.
However this time restraint does not intimidate us. In fact Placidyl (Izzy's previous short film), was 8 minutes long, and comprised of 40 different shots, and was successfully filmed in under 15 hours.
So 2.5 days - we've got this!
We expect completion of our film in early 2018, however public release will be contingent on festival submissions and acceptances. Please know that we will keep you in the loop on when you can expect to see the film you so generously (and intelligently) invested in!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
