In 6 years, Erin Davies has driven the "Fagbug" to 48 states in the US. What started as someone's attempt to communicate through hate slurs written on her car, has become a very public search to find the person who did it. Once vandalized, Erin left the words "fag" and "u r gay" on her car for 1-year, planned a 58-day trip around the country, and made an award winning documentary about the adventure.
Since the documentary's release, Erin and the Fagbug have toured to over 200 middle schools, high schools and colleges. The project has saved lives, inspired others to be more comfortable with who they are, and deterred people from bullying. Often people refer to the Fagbug project as an example of how to turn lemons into lemonade.
Reaching the 49th (Hawaii) and 50th (Alaska) states with the Fagbug will send a message that absolutely anything is possible.
Risks and challenges
One of the many challenges Erin will face in reaching Alaska and Hawaii are possible break downs along the way. The car will have everything fixed prior to leaving, and will be checked up on regularly throughout the trip. That being said, its always a risk taking a cross-country trip. A certain amount of car issues are to be expected especially with a car that has over 235,000 miles on it.
Erin has a spring tour planned from New York to Los Angeles. She is booked every weekday from March 6-April 25th. The fagbug will be shipped from Los Angeles April 26th. It costs $1100 each way and takes 13 days to ship the car. Erin will fly home to Syracuse April 26th and fly from Syracuse to Maui to meet the car May 9th. Erin will be in Maui May 9-14th. She's partnered with Maui Sunseeker GLBT Resort and Maui Pride to coordinate educational events with the movie, car, and project while there. The shipping and flight costs, and length of days it takes to ship the car are the biggest obstacles in getting to Hawaii.
The fagbug will be shipped to Seattle, WA May 14th. It will take 13 days to get the car there. Erin will fly to Syracuse from Maui and back to Washington May 26th to meet her car in Seattle. Erin has a tour scheduled in Oregon and Washington May 27-31st. Erin will drive to Anchorage, Alaska from Washington June 1-5. Erin will arrive in Anchorage, Alaska June 5. Erin has partnered with OUT North movie theater in Anchorage to have a screening of Fagbug with Q and A June 8th during Gay Pride week. Erin has also partnered with Identity to present to GLBT youth while in the area. Erin will drive from Anchorage, Alaska to Syracuse, NY June 9-16th.
Other challenges Erin will face are fatigue (with driving so many hours), being away from family and friends, and dealing with judgment and critics. Erin will drive as little as possible throughout the night, will get as much rest as possible, and will remain as neutral and respectful as possible while talking to people of opposing views.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
