Anchors up! Here’s an exciting new card game that’s simple to learn and fun to play! Gather your crew of dastardly pirates to set sail before your opponents do and win the game! Along the way you can sabotage their efforts with cannon fire, a bout of scurvy or incite mutiny in their midst! Convince more pirates to join your crew with spiced rum and treasure! Or even kidnap a crew member from a rival ship! If you have an abundance of Swabbies mopping the decks but not enough Gunners to man the cannons, you can trade them across to a rival crew for someone more worthy of your ship! But beware, you might not always get what you bargain for! After all, pirates are a deceitful lot!
Ages 12 - Adult. Players 2 – 4 (additional decks can be added to extend the game for more players). Approximate playing time is 30 - 45 mins.
“Choose Your Crew: Pirates is a wicked game with some surprising strategies. It’s simple enough for kids but will keep the adults coming back for more. I guarantee you’ll be calling your best friend a treacherous swine after playing this game with him. I sure did.” Barry Hill, Gamer, Australia.

We've play tested this new card and it really does add a new level of depth and strategy to the game!
Basic Gameplay Video:
Here's an instructional video on how to play. We haven't posted this until now because we wanted make a better video with the updated cards, but due to popular demand this will have to make do for now! The Recruitment and Man Overboard cards have changed design since this video was made. Our next video will be a lot more exciting - promise!
Your Crew. Here are the crew members you’ll need to win the game:
1.Captain – You’ll need someone to run the ship and make the demands.
2.First Mate – Trust your keys to the treasury to this worthy pirate.
3.Bosun- A foreman to plan, schedule and assign the work, he or she is also great at waking everyone up too early and dampening festive activities before they turn riotous!
4.Navigator – This crew member will study maps, stare at the stars and keep you on the longitude!
5.Carpenter – Your ship is made from wood, so it makes sense to have a carpenter aboard to fix her up after each battle and plug the holes before she sinks!
6.Helmsman – The helmsman will be at the wheel, trusted to keep her steady even in the wildest storm!
7.Gunner – Cannons! To the cannons! There’s nothing more satisfying than firing a flaming cannonball into the broadside of an enemy ship!
8.Sail Maker – With cannon balls shrieking through the air and fires aboard ship, the first thing to go in a battle is the sails. Lucky you have a Sail Maker aboard to patch her up!
9.Rigger – Knots, who knows how to tie up a sail? A rigger!
10.Cook – Surprise! Seafood is on the menu tonight! The cook will keep your merry crew of cut-throats happily fed. He knows 76 ways to cook a salmon!
11.Surgeon – With cannon fire, swashbuckling, raids and the pirate life comes many injuries! Aren’t you glad your crew has someone on hand to patch them up with a hook here, or a peg leg there?
12.Cooper – Rum, supplies, gun powder and stowaways – you’ll need barrels and lots of them. An expert Cooper will keep them rolling out.
13.Cabin Boy – He’ll run errands and be the first to learn of all the major plot twists during your wild adventures!
14.Swabbie – Keep the Poop Deck free of.. well.. poop with this mop savvy pirate!
15.Sailor – The business end of sailing – these crew members will keep the ship tip top – when they aren’t drunk that is.
16.Powder Monkey – This agile little fellow will make sure the gun powder is stored safely – unless he gets distracted by pretty much everything! Tip – Don’t light the lanterns below deck.
Here are the ways you can sabotage your opponents:
Man Overboard Cards (these cards allow you to remove a crew member of your choice from your opponent’s crew and shuffle it back into the deck):
1.Scurvy – There’s nothing like a bout of scurvy to thin out the numbers.
2.Kraken – The terror of the sea is suspiciously guided to your rival’s ship and manages to pull a rival crew member to his death!
3.Mutiny – A whisper here, a rumour there and all of a sudden your rival is facing mutiny – the ring leader amidst the crew will have to go!
4.Cannon Fire – A short and precise cannon blast sends a rival crew member to the murky depths!
5.Storm – Such bad luck - your rival has sailed straight into a storm – Man overboard!
6.The Plague – whether he really caught the black plague or was secretly dabbed with black dots of tar while he slept in a drunken stupor, the stricken rival crew member must go!
7.Whirlpool – Maelstroms, eddies: sailing too close will inevitably end in disaster. Your rival loses one crew member to this mystery of the sea!
8.A Curse – voodoo, witches and black magic! Your unlucky rival discovers one of his crew members has turned into a shellfish! The cook doesn’t mind where is supplies come from – good eating tonight!
Here are the ways you can convince more crew members to join:
Recruitment Cards (these allow you to place an extra crew member from your hand onto the table during your turn or to kidnap one crew member from a rival crew):
1.Spiced Rum – ah, a nice big barrel of spiced rum will convince any reluctant sea dog to go fetch!
2.Treasure Map – the intrigue and enticement of bounty plundered from a hidden treasure! Who can resist that?
3.Grappling Hook – If your negotiating skills are lacking you can always revert to kidnapping! A grappling hook around the neck is difficult to argue with!
4.Sea Shanties– Every good sea voyage deserves a merry sing along. Convincing a pirate to join your crew with this dangling carrot is a no-brainer!
5.Loot – ah loot- the thought of sailing up to a passenger ship in the black of night before boarding her with all blunderbusses blazing and looting her of all she’s worth – that’s the pirate’s life for me!
6.Tales of Adventure – inspire a pirate to your cause with tales of mystery and adventure on the high seas!
7.Mermaids – The beauties of the sea – those bare-chested babes with flowing locks and flopping fish tails – what pirate could resist the lure of the beautiful mermaids?
8.Enchanted Sword– having an unfair advantage in any fight is irresistible to any cunning, cheating pirate. Offer this up to get your pirate of choice aboard. He doesn’t need to know its enchantment simply makes it shine nicely.
CREW SWAPPING - There's a time to be honest and a time to be deceitful..
During your turn you may offer to swap a Pirate Card from your hand with a Pirate Card that a rival may have in his or her hand. This can lead to deceit, joy, regrets, laughter and resentment. In fact, coupled with Man Overboard cards, this game feature can bring about some strategies to really unhinge your opponent.
An Easy Game with Depth
Choose Your Crew Pirates is simple to pick up and play. Your goal is to get all 16 crew members out before your rival. Each turn consists of picking up a card from the Stack and placing it in your hand before playing a card from your hand or offering to swap a Crew Member with a rival. Along the way you can use Man Overboard and Recruitment Cards to hinder your opponent’s progress or to advance your own.
Name A Pirate!
Have you got a crazy imagination and can think up the best Pirate names on the seven seas? Go ahead! Your Pirate name will feature on one of the 64 Pirate cards IN THE GAME! You'll also get a high definition image of your Pirate's card, two complete games and free postage to anywhere!
More Than One Way To Play
There are alternative ways to play Choose Your Crew: Pirates, including a single player game, a card matching game, a trick taking game, and for the adults - a drinking game! Back this Kickstarter campaign and you will be sent PDF rule sheets via email as each new game type is created.
Risks and challenges
All 80 cards are finished. The box is finished. The rules sheet is done. The game has been extensively play tested with 2 players, 3 players, 4 players and we've even used two decks to extend the game for 8 players (that was a barrel of fun!).
So what risks are we facing? Printing and postage are the only two things that are out of my control. However, I have chosen a top quality and reputable printer that specializes in printing card games. So at this stage all I need is backers. ;)Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
