Hello! My name is Linda Goldstein Knowlton and my daughter Ruby is six. When my husband and I adopted her from China we had no idea what lay ahead. We became a family - in an instant. But as I began to think about Ruby's future, I kept thinking about what her life would be like as a teenager. I couldn’t stop thinking about it in terms of her search for identity - I remembered my own search, I think being human is having that search - but hers might be so different from mine. As a filmmaker, I knew I had to explore this.

What is Somewhere Between about?
There are over 80,000 children adopted from China now growing up in the U.S. – over 90% of them are girls. Somewhere Between tells the intimate stories of four of these teenaged girls. They have different kinds of families but are united by one thing: all four were adopted from China, because they had birth parents who could not keep them, due to personal circumstances colliding with China's 'One Child Policy'. These wonderful young women allow us to grasp what it is like to come-of-age in today's America as trans-racial adoptees. At the same time, we see them as typical American teenagers doing what teenagers everywhere do…struggling to answer the question, ‘Who Am I?’
Through these young women, we ourselves pause to consider who we are—both as individuals and as a nation of immigrants. And with great honesty and courage, these four girls open their hearts to experience love, compassion, and self-acceptance....and show us the way, too.
What has happened with the film so far?
It has been very exciting to see what an impact the film has made so far upon the people that have had a chance to see it at film festivals (read our collected comments on our facebook page and the comments and reviews on our website). I have been travelling around North America, from Toronto (where it won the Audience Award at Hot Docs) to Milwaukee (where the film won the Jury Prize for Best Documentary), to Portland and Vancouver and Boulder and Los Angeles and Hawaii and more! This month I am off to India where the film has been chosen to be part of the Sundance Institute’s FILM FORWARD Program for Advancing Cultural Dialogue. Later this year, I will be showing the film in Morocco and the Chickasaw Nation in Oklahoma.
Why is Somewhere Between on Kickstarter?
It sounds like the film is done, right? Well, in one sense it is, we have finished shooting and have a completed print, but there is one more vital step that we have to complete – BRINGING THE FILM TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC. Distribution is what allows me to get the film out to all of the people who want to see it, all over the US and the world.
Right now all I have is one precious HD videotape that I travel with from film festival to film festival. So what we need to distribute the film is: posters and 35mm prints and screening master tapes and newspaper ads and everything broadcast and theatrical venues need to actually show the film. And, that is where you come in. Your help in this Kickstarter campaign can make this all happen. By choosing one of these great options to the right, you will help us reach our goal to bring this film to the public – and you!.
$80,000 is the minimum we need to distribute Somewhere Between - the more we get - the further the reach of the screenings. Also it is important to know if we don't reach the full amount of $80,000 within the 30 days, Kickstarter will return all pledged money to the backers and NOTHING will go to Somewhere Between. So please send what you can, help us reach the $80,000!
I'm excited about Somewhere Between - aside from contributing here on Kickstarter, how can I help?
Thank you for asking... The most direct way to help is to spread the word to friends and acquaintances far and wide and ask them to contribute to our Kickstarter campaign. 'Like' our video at the top of the page and tweet it out to your friends; post us on your Facebook wall and invite your friends to as well; make an announcement at your school, community group or church; or join our newsletter list on the website and forward it onto friends, adding a personal note from you.
When will I be able to see the film in a theater?
We are planning on a Summer 2012 release to theaters, and Fall 2012 for retail DVDs, movies on demand, iTunes, etc.
What exactly will the money be spent on?
This Kickstarter campaign is to raise the necessary funds for Distribution and Marketing of Somewhere Between. These funds will be used for, among other things:
- To create a theatrical film trailer to show in theaters and on the web
- To create and ship the 35mm prints and DCPs
- To pay for advertising in newspapers, magazines, on Facebook, on Twitter and elsewhere online
- To pay for our marketing and publicity team to help us properly advertise the film
- To pay for an experienced distribution team to make sure that Somewhere Between is readily available through all possible outlets, from theaters to Netflix.
Can you exceed the goal?
Yes we can! The more funds we raise, the easier it will be for us to both market and distribute the film, and the more cities we can play theatrically!
Can contributors increase pledges once they have been made?
Absolutely! If you have already contributed, and are signed in to your account, then instead of a green “Back This Project” button on our page, there should be a blue “Manage Your Donation” button. Click that, and you can enter a new amount or choose a new incentive!
Can I give one of these incentives as a gift?
Gifting an incentive is a wonderful idea! After the campaign, when we message you for details on your incentives, you can then give us the information for the person you wish to gift.
How can I contact you?
You can reach me at email@example.com – feel free to email with questions, comments, or happy thoughts! Just be aware that I get a lot of emails, so please give it a few days for me to respond!
