Remember when you were young and everything seemed within reach? You believed you could accomplish anything you imagined.
No dream seemed too big.
It didn’t matter if your parents said you couldn’t fly, you knew you could. You believed. And you didn’t understand what gravity was – yet.
Well, this production makes me feel like that child again. My dream, a leap away, with a push of support from you!
I have my cape; I’m ready to fly --
No really, I am ready to fly – to Sable Island! And I want to take you along with me.
Explore the magic of one of the most isolated and diverse islands on earth through my documentary film, S(t)able Island. _________________________________________________________
I want to produce a documentary about Sable Island to create an awareness and education of this beautiful place, and to inspire others to appreciate our environment more.
I promised myself whatever I do with my life; I will do it with all my heart and inspire positive change. This is my way of giving to a place that has inspired me to look beyond myself and discover what truly is important to me. Appreciate something for what it is, respect its difference, and never alter its beauty.
Island of Sand - “The Graveyard of the North Atlantic" - The Dark Island
Located 300 kilometres (200 miles) off the coast of Nova Scotia, this sliver of sand reaches 42km (26 miles) long and roughly 1.4 km (1 mile) wide. Its storms and shifting sands has devoured over 350 ships since the fifteen hundreds.
"The unforgiving manner in which the island has treated people is a stark contrast to the beauty of the flora and fauna that continue to flourish on the island, and that stands testament to the idea the island is meant to be left wild and free."
Sable Island is most famously known for its wild horses. Descended from horses of the 1700’s, almost 500 of them roam freely without any human interference or fear of predators.
With the island in constant change and the water levels of our oceans rising each year, we need to capture the beauty the island holds now and explore what it will become.
The island is restricted due to its status and isolating location, leaving it relatively untouched by mankind. With the exception of a handful of permanent residents and about 50 to 100 annual visitors, few will ever experience the beauty of Sable Island.
That's why I want to bring Sable Island to you. I will make you feel as if you have grown up on Sable Island.
My documentary will cover the full dynamics of the island from its early discovery and future predictions, to the behavior of the wild horses and what makes them unique, and insight from its advocators as why the island touches our hearts so deeply.
To do this, I plan to fly to Sable Island in August 2013 to explore the elements that create this captivating place. I need your help to get me on that flight.
Travelling to a restricted and protected island isn’t cheap; it's actually very expensive. Your contribution will help me afford the charter plane which for a roundtrip ticket is about $12,000. I told you it wasn’t cheap! The rest will go towards accommodations on the island ($300/night), distribution costs, and equipment.
I am planning to shoot on Sable Island for two to three weeks to gather enough footage of this magical island.
"Some places need to be left alone to preserve its magic. Sable Island holds magic in every grain of its sand."
There is no one else that will give so much to this project as I am. It is everything to me.
With passion as our wind, let's prove to our inner child dreams can take flight. We will accomplish everything we imagine. We are our dreams.
Risks and challenges
“If you believe in something you will find a way, if not, you will find excuses.”
With Kickstarter, I am exposing my vulnerability to you by sharing my dream, and hoping you will help me make it a reality. I am letting you (someone I do not personally know) into a part of my world that means the most to me. How many can say they have done that, or want to do that? I am taking this risk because I believe in the positive influence this production will have.
Along this journey, mistakes will be made, risks will be taken, and lessons will be learned. I am grateful to have the support system I do, for the people who believe in my dream and myself, are the ones who have really made my dream come alive. I will face every challenge with a positive attitude and openness to learn. My dream does scare me, which reassures me it is worth every hurdle I’m forced to go through. I believe in risking everything to pursue what I love, and that is exactly what I am doing.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
