"The sauna is an apotheosis of all experience: Purgatory and paradise; earth and fire; fire and water; sin and forgiveness. It is eternal new birth. You are healed, you are made new." -Constance Malleson 1936
The floating sauna was born on a cold winter's day in January of 2014, as we were dreaming of Seattle summers. Combining our love of the water, the relaxing dry heat of saunas, and floating structures, the design quickly began to take shape. We called this project ‘wa_sauna’ and felt it could be a welcomed addition to the Pacific Northwest landscape and its adventurous people.
As spring came, the project took on a life of its own. Seattleites and the greater design community took hold of the project and published, blogged and re-blogged our concept images. Spurred on by this interest and our friends asking how and when they could experience this structure, we realized wa_sauna was something our community craves.
The earliest concepts for the sauna were always focused on the journey to discover this place; creating a unique experience and refuge in the water that would offer a new perspective on the landscape. We imagine people kayaking out to the structure and tying off. The design has a deck, a wood-fired sauna, and a roof platform for canon balls! The rear ladder connects the water, dock, and roof platform. The 'cool down hatch' allows hot and sweaty visitors a chance to open the back door and cold plunge directly into the water!
The sauna is designed to fit on a standard size trailer. It can be transported and launched into any accessible still body of water, and when not in use, parked and stored on land.
Over the past 6 months, we have been developing the construction documents, consulting with engineers, and formulating a timeline for fabrication. We have built 3D models, physical models, and full size wall drawings to help describe and understand the project fully. Following the fundraising campaign, we will continue to dial in every detail in preparation for a spring 2015 construction start.
where your money goes:
all your money goes towards the design, fabrication, and project management to build the floating sauna!
who we are:
goCstudio is an innovative architecture and design studio founded by Jon Gentry and Aimée O'Carroll in 2012.
Jon Gentry is a registered architect in the state of Washington and has been living and working in Seattle since 2003. Jon believes that architecture, born of a passionate process and inextricably tied to the act of making, can inspire and elevate the everyday.
Aimée O’Carroll is a registered architect in the UK. Aimée is passionate about design as a collaborative process; as a way to blur the conventional perceptions of what we know as architecture.
Risks and challenges
One challenge will be finding the best locations for the wa_sauna to launch. We want to make sure that we find a location that is accessible to all of you who wish to experience it. We welcome any and all ideas from you, our supporters and fellow future sauna mates!
When the Kickstarter campaign is funded, we WILL build the first wa_sauna! One challenge we face is finding the best launching point for the first sauna. We are ready to make this project happen and need YOUR support to fund this endeavor. We have identified our collaborators who will help oversee the engineering and fabrication, and they are as excited as us to get moving! Once we have funding we aim to have the sauna floating by summer 2015!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
