Hello trolley enthusiasts, sound designers and film producers!

The Uptown Trolley Sound Library will be a professionally recorded, edited and metadata tagged collection of the sounds of the historic restored trolley cars that traverse McKinney Avenue in Dallas, Texas.

I recently took my first trip on the McKinney Avenue Transit Authority trolleys for the specific purpose of scouting and doing some preliminary recordings of these historic cars for my own personal sound library.  The story, images and first recordings from that scout are available here

After my scouting trip I was very excited about how the cars sounded and how many different noises there were to be captured, so I contacted the MATA business division to talk about chartering a car for a proper recording session.  They were very excited about the proposition and offered to put the trolley I recorded up on the lift before our session so that I can position mics on the underside of the trolley, as well as in and around all of the various noise making parts of the car.

The MATA people are also very knowledgeable about the unique sounds that each car makes and are very willing to help identify the most interesting and unique sounds each car makes.  For example, Matilda and Petunia each have different sounding trolley bells, since one is a repeater bell like the one in the beginning of my recording above, and the other is a single bell.

I'm looking to raise the money to pay the fee needed to charter one trolley car for a recording as well as to tip the driver.  I would also like to hire an assistant to help with mic placement and monitoring.

All together this is really not much, since I already have access to all of the recording and editing gear that would be needed to execute the project once I have access to the car.  Once the recordings are done, donors at the $5 level and higher will receive access to an exclusive library of pro level sounds that won't be available anywhere else.

I'll also note that if we significantly surpass our goal I'll potentially be able to charter more than one car, rent additional mics and bring on an assistant to help setup and monitor all of the mics we'll be using.

If you're a sound designer, a musician, a film producer, or a trolley and streetcar enthusiast then back this project and get your hands on an exclusive library of unique historic trolley car recordings!
