Maia of the Forest | Coloring Book
by Natasha Kennedy
"Maia of the Forest depicts an artistic journey through depression. The coloring pages and narrative inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s Thumbelina, are designed to bring comfort and beauty into the lives of anyone who, like the author, has seen sorrow."
Seattle, WA is one of the most depressed Cities in the USA: #beapartofthesolution
My Story | How it all began
I began this project last fall, in the midst of a really dark season of my life. After a year and a half struggling with severe depression and anxiety, I found myself in the hospital after a major surgery feeling like I had no light left in my life. During the week in the hospital, where I was awaiting news on if I had cancer, I decided not to wallow in the darkness any longer. I wanted something good to come out of the darkness, even if I never got better. This experience birthed Maia of the Forest.
Every time I suffered an anxiety attack, I would sit down and begin to draw illustrations from the story of "Thumbelina", as I felt like a small person in a huge world I couldn't control. As I began to read and ponder the story written by Hans Christian Andersen, I came up with my own version of the story, using the same symbolism and story line, to tell my story of depression.
I didn't want to just be one of the victims of depression and Anxiety, I wanted to be a part of the solution. I wrote into the story the deep themes of hope throughout my struggle, in the hopes of sharing light to those who are still in the midst of the darkness.
Depression, for some, will be there for life, and I want to offer comfort and beauty to those who feel as though they have lost it.
With every line I drew, I felt comfort and peace, and with every space to color, I hope that others might find the same repose.
Maia of the Forest is not just a book for "Depressed people", it is a symbol of hope in this world filled with sorrow. Death brings new life, and suffering produces perseverance. The story is meant to empower us and cause us to see beauty in parts of our lives that may have otherwise seemed hopeless, and cast light on the dark shadows in our minds.
The Artwork and Story
Maia of the Forest looks a lot like an old-fashioned, illustrated Fairy Tale book with narrative on the left page and an image on the right. Though unlike normal illustrated books, the illustrations are designed to be colored by the reader. This gives many layers to the reader's experience.
One read through of the book gives you an experience with the character's walk through life, but as you start coloring, it gives you more time to meditate and ponder each page and each stage of the story. The detailed line-art makes for interesting shapes to fill and the reader is able to express themselves through Maia's story through her seasons of life in the Forest.
Many have said that coloring books for adults are often therapeutic for those who struggle with depression, stress, anxiety, PTSD, and more! But this book is designed for all who are looking for artistic expression, interesting story lines, and adventure to spice up the every-day life!
The Book in Print
Any purchase of the Book through Kickstarter will be signed by me. I want to send a part of me with this story as it reaches everyone who reads it.
The Book was printed on 70lb Cover Paper, which means it is heavy and can hold coloring for those who like to work with ink or water colors.
Packages | Rewards
There are a variety of Packages you can fund and different ways to make this project happen. Some of the rewards for funding this Project include:
Be a part of the Solution: #beapartofthesolution is your way of helping fight the depression that is growing throughout the USA. You dont have to buy the book, but if you want to fund something that is aiming to be a part of the healing, you can fund as little as $1
Digital Book: For those who like to color digitally, or just want to read the story in PDF format.
Signed Book: As I mentioned before, every book I send out will be signed by me and have high quality paper. Experience the story in physical form whether you just want to read it, or you enjoy coloring!
For someone you know: If reading about this project makes you think, "I know just who would love this!" Then go the extra step for them by buying this package! It comes wrapped with love by me, includes your choice of coloring pencils or markers, and a special note written just for the person you want to give it to. It would be addressed to them from you and sent to their door or yours.
Personalized Artwork: (Usually a big hit!) In my previous kickstarter, the Personalized artwork was a pretty big hit. I am bringing this feature back with this project! As you can see below I would take a photo of you or someone you know, and do a portrait in the style of Maia of the Forest. (Courtesy of Arianna America)
The Print can be either uncolored or colored by me, and will be signed.
Special Mention: Your name can have a special place in the front of the book if you get the Premium Package.
Thank you for your interest in the project. It is exciting to #beapartofthesolution and put something out there that can bring hope to all of us who have seen hard times!

Risks and challenges
Maia of the Forest, the book, is a completed project. Once funded, we will put in the order for the printers and they usually are completed within two weeks!
The most risk lies within how much time it will take to complete the personalized artwork. My last project, "Where I go when I sleep", was sent out later than we promised as it took me a while to finish the artwork while I struggled with anxiety.
I have a method now of finishing my artwork much quicker, and we will do our best to be on time! Thank you for your patience as I do all my artwork while struggling with depression.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
