About

During the Amazon Express expedition in 2012, we captured photos and video from sections of the world that had never been recorded.

The expedition started in the Peruvian Andes, above 14,000 feet, at newly discovered head waters that extend the Amazon River over 50 miles from its previously recorded source above the Apurimac River.  For 500 miles, the team paddled through dangerous white water canyons with beautiful scenery and treacherous Class V+ rapids.  From there, another 3800 miles of flat water lay between the team and the Atlantic Ocean in Brasil.

Through the cloud forest to the rain forest to pristine white sand beaches, the team paddled the entire Amazon River while encountering unforeseen challenges and coming face-to-face with storms, pirates, narco-traffickers, devil fish, strippers, huge waves, adversaries, ocean liners, barges, weak coffee, massive tidal currents, illness and interpersonal struggles. The struggles and successes are all here and ready to be brought to you, in living color, as they say.

The money raised by this campaign will fund the production of the raw footage into a feature length documentary that will be presented at film festivals and theaters wherever possible. Funding will also go towards Austin-based bands to provide a soundtrack for the feature-length documentary. We are well on our way and with your help, we will complete the documentary by the end of 2013.

The funds will also be used for licensing, distribution and entry into film festivals. Any funds raised above our target amount will be used for gathering additional footage from areas of the Amazon River where footage was lost when pirates stole the video camera at gunpoint. We acquired another camera after this incident, but would like to fill in this gap with better quality footage.

Risks and challenges

The challenges we have, following our financial goals met via Kickstarter, include obtaining the interviews from all of the people involved in the expedition. Some people associated with the expedition may not be willing to participate in the documentary, due to interpersonal conflicts that occurred during the expedition. All efforts will be made to include their interviews in the documentary.

The risks involved include my naivete and learning curve associated with producing a documentary and bringing it to the big screen. As viewers will see in the finished documentary, I'll approach the production of the documentary as I approached the expedition. I had never organized or led an expedition before the Amazon Express, but with perseverance and seeking sound advice from people with the necessary experience, great things can be accomplished.

We have been working hard on the documentary for several months now, so the only real challenge right now is financial. The editor is choosing selects from hundreds of hours of footage. The graphics artist is working on all the graphic effects. I'm working on the narrative. Next week, (Oct 21) the team will continue with the interviews.

Having never made a documentary or waded into movie or video production in any way, I've hired industry professionals to help complete the interviews and produce the documentary. We are also working with media professionals to help bring the finished product to the big screen.

It's an "all or nothing" proposition, so if we don't raise $50,000.00 in thirty days, then we will not be able to receive any of the donations made through Kickstarter, so please help us meet our financial goal and donate now. Thank you for your support.
