Demand Poetry. Demand Quality. Demand Print. #SAVETUESDAY
Tuesday; An Art Project is a biannual, unbound, entirely letterpress-printed journal of poetry, photographs, and fine art prints dedicated to publishing a diversity of voice and vision.
Tuesday’s unbound 5x7 pages are made for you to hold, save, mail to a friend, frame, or leave in an elevator!
A truly unique publication, each issue of Tuesday is thoughtfully packaged and hand-folded. The thickness, texture, and autonomy of each unbound page prompts an intimate and lasting relationship between reader and poem, viewer and image. We believe strongly in the works we publish; so the pages we print them on are designed, both aesthetically and structurally, to last.
From 2007-2013, we produced eleven issues of Tuesday, publishing over 150 distinguished poets and artists including: Terese Svoboda, Charles Simic, Elena Rivera, Billy Collins, Khadijah Queen, Anthony Madrid, Valzyna Mort, Rosmarie Waldrop, Cate Marvin, Matthea Harvey, David Rivard, Myronn Hardy, Carmen Gimenez Smith, Quraysh Ali Lansana, M.A. Vizsolyi, Simone White, Adrian Matejka, Evie Shockley, Matthew Zapruder and Amber Tamblyn. Photographers include Elsa Dorfman, Lisa M. Robinson, Ken Rosenthal, Nubar Alexanian, and Thomas Sayers Ellis.
RISD Print Professor Dan Wood of DWRI Letterpress was instrumental in the design of Tuesday. He and Editor Jennifer S. Flescher went to high school together. Years ago, they sat down at a Jen's dining room table to plot the fold and layout of the very first issue of Tuesday. She said, "Hey, I want to do this crazy project!" He said, "But my print shop isn't up and running yet!" The rest is history...
“The economics of poetry and publishing—the economics of paper itself and of picking up a pen—undermine entirely their necessity in our lives.” -Editor and Publisher Jennifer S. Flescher
In 2013, we printed what we thought would be our final issue. But we've missed Tuesday, and our readers miss it too. So, we're trying to shake up the economics to bring the magazine back to life.
Rather than sell Tuesday once it’s already been printed, we’d like—through subscribers like you!—to fund two issues at a time, in advance. This campaign funds issues Twelve and Thirteen.
We can’t letterpress on demand… but you can demand letterpress!
COST OF PRODUCTION
Fine quality paper and letterpress printing are very expensive, but they are also extremely valuable. Worth—we think—every penny.
Here's what it will take to produce the next two issues:
- $9,000 Custom Letterpress Printing* by DWRI Letterpress and Flash Print
- $1,000 Postage for Shipment of Issues*
- $3,000 Updated Hardware/Software to Support Layout and Design
- $2,000 Promotion of Issues Twelve and Thirteen, including conference fees, book fair tables, and other costs
*Estimates are based on a 500-Run of two issues.
SNEAK PEEK AT GIFTS
The primary goal of our campaign is to collect enough subscriptions to print the next two issues of Tuesday. But if you are able to give a little more, here's a peek at some of the goodies we can offer you!
To Artist and Animator Annalisa Barron for bringing Tuesday to life in our Kickstarter video. We love you Annie!!
Risks and challenges
We have nearly a decade of experience publishing and promoting Tuesday. So, we're confident that with your financial support we will be able to print and distribute two more gorgeous issues.
Our greatest challenge moving forward will be to move away from a Kickstarter model and amass enough support and subscribers to fund a long and healthy life for the magazine.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
