About

The book is entitled Mawang shu 馬往書.  It was written in 1824.

The author is Miao Jize 苗集澤 a figure unknown in the history of Chinese medicine.  The book that he penned is a work of art, history, and medicine. This book honors the original.

Part one of the book will place the book in the history of China, and Chinese horse medicine. Part two will be a complete English translation of the original text. Part three will discuss the medicine in the book in light of the horse medicine of today.

The 12 x 6.25 inch landscape format French-folded pages of the original manuscript will be reproduced in 4-color process on a high quality uncoated paper stock to emulate the texture and subtlety of the original rice paper, ink drawings and Chinese lettering.

The front matter, back matter and index of the book will be reproduced in 2 PMS colors on different high quality uncoated paper stock that is smoother in texture to differentiate it from the pages reproducing the original manuscript. The pages featuring the English translation of the manuscript will smaller than the other pages and will be inserted between the manuscript pages to make viewing the Chinese and English versions of the text more accessible.

Risks and challenges

With the help of many collaborators, I have studied and published about the history of the horse in China for nearly two decades. During that time, I managed to collect the largest collection of handwritten Chinese manuscripts in private hands pertaining to horse medicine.

With that collection, came a dream. As a practicing equine veterinarian, a lover of horses, and a student of history, I am excited to translate and reproduce this manuscript from 1824.

Producing this book will take the combined efforts of experts from around the world. The text will be translated by Zhang Qing 张晴 from the Department of Asian Studies, Bonn University, Germany, in collaboration with Dr. Angela Schottenheimer and her PhD student Xu Zhexin 徐喆昕, of the the University of Salzburg, Austria, and Paul D. Buell, PhD, renowned sinologist and independent scholar, North Georgia University. Everyone will add their expertise on the history of the horse, and horse medicine, in China. The book will be handcrafted in China, using traditional Chinese methods, in order to maintain the book's authenticity.

While coordinating these international efforts could be a challenge, all of the collaborators have the expertise and the motivation to see this project through to a timely and successful conclusion.
