Level 1 - The Concept
Fittingly, Dave Aceto and Ben Culver met each other over a game of pinball and since 2012 they have been playing games and drinking beer together. The idea to open a barcade in Portland was founded out of necessity. There wasn't a place in town where you could share a good beer and play a quality game.
Enter Arcadia National Bar.
Arcadia is about celebrating good beer, good games, and good times with friends. Our space will foster a comfortable social environment that everyone will feel welcome and engaged in. Got a group of friends in town? Enjoy a beer over some competitive NBA Jam. Have an hour before you go back to work? Grab a bite to eat and try to beat the high score on your favorite pinball machine, or come chat with us while you catch the Sox game at the bar.
Level 2 - The Goods
Beer - We believe that, like us, you enjoy drinking good beer. There is an abundance of great tasting beer in Maine and New England and it all pairs fantastically with gaming. We'll be bringing you the freshest and most delicious the area has to offer along with a few favorites from around the globe. Expect to see names like Bissell Brothers, Gneiss, Marshall Wharf, Austin St., Oxbow and Foundation. Other New England breweries we are digging right now include Night Shift, Notch and Pretty Things.
Games - We've all walked into a pub, pool hall or dive only to find a neglected pinball machine with one flipper stuck or a Donkey Kong machine that isn't even on. We care about our games and want you to enjoy playing them! Have a question about a level or want to know how to get a better score? We'd love to talk to you about it! We don't just own these games, we play them. A lot. Our opening line-up will include 10-12 pinball machines and 12-15 arcade games. From Q-Bert to Street Fighter and Black Knight 2000 to Lord of the Rings, we'll have you covered. We'll also be running tournaments for console games like Super Smash Brothers and Mario Kart.
Food - We wanted our menu to reflect a time in your life when you cared more about the Nintendo D-pad than the iPad and we think nothing says that more than the grilled cheese sandwich. The great thing about grilled cheese is that you can put tons of stuff in them! We'll offer everything from the classic to specialty versions with different meats, cheeses, veggies and breads. We're working on a special grilled 'cheese' for our vegan friends too! You'll also find milkshakes (boozy ones too!) and homemade popsicles in the summer.
Final Boss - The Funding
We're excited to be a part of the changing landscape on upper Preble Street, only a stones throw away from Monument Square in downtown Portland. With the addition of Arcadia along with the great new pizza venture across the street, Slab, we see the neighborhood becoming a destination for locals and folks from away. Before we can open our doors though, we have a lot of work to do and that is where the Kickstarter comes into play. Our goal is to reach $25,000 or more. We'll be using your contributions to redesign and revamp our home at 24 Preble.
Here are some of the things we'll be doing...
- Electrical work to make sure we can properly power all of our machines and the lighting is adjusted appropriately. No more glare on pinball machines from poorly placed lights!
- Flooring, because we need to level out places to put our games.
- We want to enhance the area with unique signage that draws people in.
- Painting and updating the look of the bar.
- Opening up the space by taking some walls down.
- Purchasing equipment that makes moving machines easier.
Risks and challenges
Opening a business by its nature is taking a risk, especially when it comes to the bar and restaurant scene. It's estimated that more than 50% of bars fail in their first year.
So what causes a bar fail and what will we do to meet these challenges? Let's ask ourselves some questions.
Does this business fill a need in the city?
There are lots of bars in Portland but most of them fill the very specific role of going out to get a drink and that is where it ends. We go beyond just having a drink and provide a different and entirely unique experience. The way we see it, we're the only game in town. (Sorry for the horrible pun.)
Is the business in touch with its customer?
The visions and goals of Arcadia National Bar are not a closed conversation. We want your feedback and input to make this a place you want to keep coming back to. Want to see a new beer? Let us know. Have an idea for a tournament? We'd love to hear it. The more we we talk about what works and doesn't work with you, the more Arcadia will work for all of us.
Are the owners ready to invest both time and money into the venture?
We are putting everything into Arcadia because we believe in it. The idea of sleeping 4 hours a night, waking up and heading right to the bar, working 14 hour days and forgetting what a calm weekend is like actually excite us. Whatever resources we have, whether it be time, money or energy...it's all going into the bar.
Opening Arcadia isn't going to be easy but with your help, it will be a little easier! We've got great things in store for you and with a financial boost we can get them out to you sooner. Thanks for taking the time to read all about us and checking out our great rewards. We look forward to sharing a game and drink with you!
