This is a dream.

On March 29th, 30th, and 31st I’m thrilled that the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans will be presenting KindHumanKind, a concert of my work created in collaboration with award winning theater makers Goat in the Road Productions.  KindHumanKind is music is a concert is a show is an event is a spectacle is a way for me to combine big artistic loves of mine into one night of strangely shaped sound.  It’s so exciting and enriching, and we need your help to actualize this large vision!

Throughout my career as a musician and a band leader I’ve been looking for ways to bend and break the traditional music show form, and develop something that can fire audience imagination through sound, sight, story, song, and other ‘s’ words.  This is one of my most ambitious attempts yet to give audiences something more when they come to a “show” -- to give them the time and space to be enveloped by the music and imagery of words, sounds & space, and to attempt some solid mind-bending of how music can affect and shape us as a society.

THE BASICS:  KindHumanKind in Concert features video, immersive light design, innovative sound design, and original costumes.  It also features 3 of my favorite musicians in the city, dynamic and seasoned female and queer musician/bandleaders: Tiffany Lamson (Givers, Rickie Lee Jones Band), Alexis Marceaux (Sweet Crude, Glasgow), and free feral ( Sing River Shout: a ritual in reparations, Leyla McCalla Band).  The design team, lead by my friends at Goat in the Road Productions, includes Jebney Lewis (set design), Joshua Courtney (light design), Kourtney Keller & Dan Pruksarnukul (projection design), Dylan Hunter (sound design), Kiyoko McCrae (costume design), Shannon Flaherty (producer/assistant director), and Chris Kaminstein (producer/director).  We’ve all been working together over the past year to collectively design a concert that offers audiences the room to shape their own storylines and themes behind the music, centering the four musicians firmly in the center of an alternate and dreamlike musical performance landscape.

THE NEED:  Your contribution will help us raise the last bit of funding we need to make this concert pop off.  I’m committed to paying the performers and artists who help make this work come alive. It’s important to me. We have an incredible group helping make this show happen: they are badass professionals in their fields who are dedicated to creating new work, and we want to pay them properly for their time and expertise.  We know that there are a lot of people raising money for a lot of things out there, so we appreciate you considering helping this particular thing!

Risks and challenges

Over the last fifteen years you may have seen me attempt to make a wide variety of stuff; from experimental music festivals to international collaborations to weekly gigs with the Royal Roses & Panorama to the wilds of Dangeria (and back). Big productions always have unexpected challenges – from space concerns to technological concerns, to the ‘we have so much to do and so little time’ concerns. However I feel so support and inspired by the artists involved in this and with the help of Goat in the Road and the good folks at the CAC feel fully confident this experience will be unique, risky (on purpose), and successful.
