In Chicago, New York, Atlanta, Detroit and all across the country, a collective of thousands are gathering-- completely off the radar.
It's a time of economic strife, job loss and home foreclosures. As empty store-fronts, food stamp lines and for sale signs are multiplying, there is one staple of American history that might be making a comeback. Roller skating.
UNITED SKATES is riding the wave of the next major artistic movement still undiscovered by mainstream America. Fusing hip-hop, breaking, animating and a new style all its own, roller rinks might find themselves back in business soon. That is, if they’re not averse to change.
It took almost 30 years for mainstream America to discover the brilliance of its own music—Jazz. It took nearly as long for Blues, Rock 'n' Roll, Hip-hop and Rap before they exploded onto the national scene. Micro-racism and prejudice all too often walk hand-in-hand with artistic genius. In this feature length documentary we will breathe awareness into the reality of our country’s continued struggle for racial equality, while simultaneously blowing your mind as we take you inside the untapped world of some of the most brilliant and innovative artists of our generation. United in Skates… This is their story.
Creating a successful film is an enormous undertaking, however we've got the biggest hurdle already covered-- a relentlessly dedicated and talented crew! Find out who we are and how we discovered this world.
We have big plans for this film, from documenting each emerging skate-dance style across the USA to diving deeper into the lives of our engaging central characters. This film is just starting to pick up speed.
HELP LACE UP THE SKATE!
With every fundraising milestone you help us reach, we'll lace up the skate. We've already reached our Kickstarter goal of $50,000 which is FANTASTIC but we hope to raise a lot more. Let's lace up the skate all the way to the top!
Phase One is just about wrapped. At this stage, we have documented skate styles coming out of New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, Virginia, Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta. With several cities in the south and west coast still to go, we are very close to having captured each and every emerging style across the country.
Phase Two is just beginning. Diving deeper into the history of this movement, and asking the larger questions around why it has yet to be recognized, we will be interviewing skaters, musicians and scholars alike until we have truly captured a complete picture of this amazing world. We will also now turn our focus on the lives of our central characters as their artistry, struggles and place in American society become the heartbeat of our film.
Phase Three will be the transition from production into post. Now the exciting part where the film starts to take shape. We will work closely with our editor to fold hundreds of hours of footage into a solid two hour cut. At this stage we will also be securing music rights, creating a sound score, soundtrack, color corrections, and more. There would be no skating movement without music. It is the pulse that brings magic out of their wheels. This is why securing rights to these songs will be a linchpin in the film’s ultimate success.
Phase Four – Outreach and Distribution. Once the film is finished, we will begin the journey of bringing it to you! Starting with a film festival run, our goal is to reach as many cities as we can across the country, spreading the infectious skater love and further igniting the movement. From there we aim for a theatrical release and beyond!

Kickstarter is an "all-or-nothing" platform, so if we don’t raise our ENTIRE goal by the deadline, we lose everything. Everyone's pledges will be returned to them in full, and all our tears will rust out our roller skates. However! If we surpass our goal, we get to keep it and can make this film!

Risks and challenges
There are still many challenges we'll be facing in bringing this project to life... but we know we will get there! As you can imagine, a film of this scale and scope not only takes a talented and passionate, hard working crew (which we have!)... it takes money.
From multi-camera rink set ups, location & production insurance, music rights, and post production demands, our budget is growing as fast as our kickstarter campaign! These obstacles are not deterring our production, but strengthening our resolve.
Everyone involved in this project is putting their heart, their drive, their experience and their talent to the table. Now we are asking for your hearts and drive to join us as we plow ahead. This project cannot be finished without the support and help of each and every one of you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
