Project Update 1.0 - More Rewards
We’re honored to be Kickstarter’s Project of the Day! We decided to celebrate the occasion by introducing some sweet new reward options for you.
If we hit our goal, everyone who pre-orders a 6-month or 12-month vinyl subscription will receive the VINYL CASE, for FREE. If you’ve selected a 1 or 3-month reward you can also get the VINYL CASE as an add on for only $20 more. Backers who’ve pre-ordered 6-month and 12-month subscriptions are already receiving those releases on exclusive deluxe colored vinyl (i.e. splatter, half-n-half, split vinyl).
In addition to the vinyl case and deluxe vinyl, everyone who pre-orders a 12-month subscription will also get one extra month, FREE! In other words, buy 12 vinyl get one free for a total of 13 vinyl records - the baker’s dozen!
Ordered a 3-month gift? We're hooking you up, too. With every 3-month gift order, you'll receive a FREE 7” vinyl record selected at random from our stash of past Pairings Box releases.
Test pressing reward tier update
We’ve also updated the rewards for the test pressings: anyone who selects those rewards will receive both the test pressing and the deluxe colored vinyl edition of the applicable records.
Thank you so much for your support!
Introducing SOUNDS DELICIOUS
Sounds Delicious is a new music subscription service for people who love covers and vinyl.
We’ve asked some of indie music’s most exciting and well-respected artists to choose any full length album they love and cover it from front to back. We’ll produce their recordings on limited edition vinyl packaged in beautifully designed jackets. The records will be released exclusively through the Sounds Delicious subscription service and delivered to you every month.
With your help, Sounds Delicious will be the first monthly vinyl subscription service to exclusively offer full length albums - featuring music not available anywhere else - on limited edition vinyl.
How Sounds Delicious works
Sounds Delicious will be a monthly vinyl record subscription service, available as a recurring subscription.
Every month you’ll receive an exclusive, limited-edition 12" vinyl record featuring one of our favorite artists covering a full-length album of their choice. Although the records will include a digital download of the album, we won’t otherwise be releasing the album in any other format.
For example, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart have announced that they'll be teaming up with Kristin Kontrol and members of Titus Andronicus and A Sunny Day In Glasgow to cover Tom Petty's Full Moon Fever in its entirety. That means not just the hits like "Free Fallin'," "I Won't Back Down," and "Runnin' Down a Dream" but also every other track on that album!
Similarly, Foxygen's Jonathan Rado has announced that he'll be covering Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run in its entirety - exploring what that album would have sounded like if The Boss had recorded it with the same stripped-down and unadorned approach he applied to the critically acclaimed Nebraska.
Each release will be strictly limited and will only be available to Sounds Delicious members by pre-ordering the collection. For some perspective, we’ve released more than 50 exclusive vinyl singles through our Pairings Box service and we’ve sold out every month so far. To ensure you don't miss a single Sounds Delicious release, you'll want to become a member today or risk losing out on a coveted collectible you won't be able to get again.
A good cover can shine new light on an original composition and, in some cases, even surpass the original. A great cover can add new meaning to a song.
Take Aretha Franklin’s cover of “Respect,” arguably one of the greatest covers of all time. Originally written by Otis Redding, “Respect” was about a desperate man begging his wife for a little “respect” (presumably a euphemism) when he gets home from work. Franklin’s version added an entirely new meaning to the song and turned it into an anthem for the feminist movement.
Other covers, such as Johnny Cash’s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt” or Ryan Adams’ full album cover of Taylor Swift’s 1989, can serve to introduce music to a completely new audience.
And as exciting as it is to hear a band cover a popular hit single by another one of your favorite artists, it’s even more fun to hear how an artist interprets the feel of an entire album - not just the big hits.
Which artists will be featured? What will they cover?
We want Sounds Delicious to become the premier subscription service for fans of both vinyl records and covers. We’ve asked many of our favorite artists to participate -- artists that mean something to us, and to you.
We plan to announce new artists over the course of the campaign, but we can already reveal that our starting lineup will include (in no particular order):
- The Pains of Being Pure At Heart
- Skylar Spence
- Mutual Benefit
- Jonathan Rado
- Yumi Zouma
- Salt Cathedral
We’re keeping the official release schedule a surprise because, let's face it, the mystery is part of what makes a subscription service so fun. We can say that future releases will reflect these same types of artists and genres.
The albums that will be covered are up to each participating artist. We've asked them to pick a record that they love and we're giving them a lot of freedom to decide what to cover and how to cover it. Based on our discussions with the artists, you can expect special guest appearances, unexpected approaches to songs you already know and love, and loads of cool surprises!
We love the physical aspect to vinyl records and the fact that, much like books, you can collect and display them in your home. An album cover (no pun intended!) is a work of art and it’s far easier to appreciate it when it’s not restricted solely to a computer screen.
More importantly, we love the warmth that analog sound provides. And, call us old-fashioned, but we love having something physical that we can hold in our hands when we buy a record. After all, most vinyl records sold today (including the records you’ll receive in this service) include digital downloads of the album alongside the vinyl. So when you buy vinyl, you often get the best of both worlds: digital and analog.
The incredible Julia Rothman will be designing record jackets and the vinyl case for SOUNDS DELICIOUS. Julia is an acclaimed illustrator that has done work for The New York Times, Design*Sponge, Chronicle Books, The New Yorker, Urban Outfitters, and more. We’re so very lucky to have her involved in this project to make SOUNDS DELICIOUS vinyl that much more attractive.
To give you a sense of what your SOUNDS DELICIOUS record jackets and vinyl case might look like, here are a few example of her work:
Instructions for Add-On Rewards:
1. Select Your Main Reward. If you're selecting one of the Limited rewards (i.e. test pressings or the Pairings Box vinyl grab bag) you should select that reward as your main reward. Otherwise, simply select the most valuable reward level as your main reward.
2. Increase your pledge amount by the total amount of the add-ons you'd like to receive. For example, if you're adding the vinyl case to a 3-month vinyl pack - you'd just add $20 to your pledge.
3. After the Kickstarter ends we'll send a survey asking you how you'd like to apply the extra pledge amount.
About Turntable Kitchen
Sounds Delicious is the creation of Matthew and Kasey Hickey, founders of Turntable Kitchen, the first and only website and subscription service connecting food and music.
We’re a husband-and-wife team that loves food and music. We launched Turntable Kitchen nearly seven years ago with the goal of introducing food lovers to music and music connoisseurs to home cooking and entertaining. With hundreds of thousands of visitors a month and millions of pageviews under our belts, we’ve built Turntable Kitchen into a recognized international brand and a top independent site for new music discovery on the web. We’ve been featured in The New York Times, The LA Times, The Guardian, Wired, and in dozens of other publications and on national television segments.
We launched the Pairings Box subscription service in 2011, offering subscribers exclusive vinyl records featuring many of our favorite new artists, original recipes, premium ingredients, and a digital mixtape of hot new music.
Over the course of nearly 5 years, we've released 57 vinyl records (and counting!) from some of the most interesting voices in music today: GEMS, Salt Cathedral, MØ, Tei Shi, NVDES, Pure Bathing Culture, Gallant, Cathedrals, Local Natives, Typhoon, Daniel Wilson, and more. We've lovingly hand-numbered, packaged, and shipped every single record ourselves to subscribers in 6/7 continents in the world.
What we need
We want to continue to work with the most amazing bands. Our favorite artists and yours. We want you to sprint to your mailbox every month in anticipation of our latest release.
To make this the most awesome vinyl record subscription service, we need:
- Artist advances: this is the money artists are paid and use for recording studio time
- Money to press high-quality records: the kind worthy of becoming collectibles
- Funds to create beautiful vinyl; we’re talking exclusive backer-only colored vinyl and more
- Designer fees: beautiful, original, and collectible cover art so you’ll want to display our records on a shelf above your turnable
We've spent months working with artists, labels, and managers to come up with a realistic release schedule and trust us, we know what it takes to produce, press, and ship records: we've been doing it month over month for years. Here's our plan:
- June 1 - June 31: Kickstarter campaign (we've reached our goal: yay!)
- July - September: artist recording time for volume 1
- September - November: record production for volume 1
- December - January: begin shipping volume 1 to Kickstarter backers
- January - February: begin shipping volume 2 to Kickstarter backers
- February - March: begin shipping volume 3 to Kickstarter backers
We'd like to thank these wonderful people for helping us bring this campaign to life.

- You! You're a big part of this story. Every email forward, tweet, Facebook message, dollar, and <3 emoji counts. We can't wait to share this thing with you.
Risks and challenges
We’ve been pressing and shipping vinyl records for our Pairings Box subscription service for almost 5 years, so you can feel confident that we’ve seen all the challenges and handled them with utmost professionalism and grace.
With that said, as anyone who regularly preorders vinyl records knows, delays in manufacturing vinyl records do occur for many reasons (i.e. unexpected problems detected on the test pressings, a Beatles vinyl reissue ties up every machine in the plant, printer errors appear and the jackets need to be reprinted, artists need more time to finish recordings, etc).
We’ll do our best to avoid delays but if and/or when they do occur, we’ll do everything we can to minimize the delay and ship as quickly as possible.
Similarly, we have agreements in place with all of the artists listed above but sometimes things don’t work out the way we hoped (there are recording delays or artist schedule conflicts). So while we feel pretty confident that our starting lineup is set, the lineup is nonetheless subject to change. As with any unexpected shipping delays, we'll do everything within our means to keep you informed of any changes in our lineup and can assure you that the quality of artists you can expect from this service will remain top notch.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
