Update!! Inside the rehearsals!!
You know what it's like to be best friends with someone for like, a MILLION years? We do everything together! The Last Five Years is our absolute favorite musical of all time. Written and composed by Jason Robert Brown, it follows the journey of two characters, Jamie and Cathy, through their relationship that spans five years. They meet, fall in love, get married and it all ends in a heart-wrenching divorce. The unique thing about this musical is that the two characters have alternating chronological songs where she starts at the end of their relationship and he starts at the beginning. They pass each other in the middle and have only one song together which is their wedding song. It's so awesome, you guys!
We have been wanting to do this show together forever, it seems! We fell in love with the music in college and have been dreaming of doing the show together ever since. Holy wow! 10 whole years ago.
Now we live in Hollywood and have been so fortunate to have met Mike Pettenato, the owner of The Cupcake Theater. We did a little singin' at one of his cabaret nights and he wants to put on the show with us! He is stoked about L5Y and is as excited as we are about it. The only thing we need now is the funds!
Musicals are expensive, y'all! We are setting the minimum budget at $4000, but we actually need around $5000 to pull this off!
Here's the run down:
- Rights: approx $150 per show for six shows (two weekends) is $900
- Musicians: 5 musicians total needed (piano, guitar, cello, two violins) at $75 per rehearsal (3 rehearsals) and $50 per show (6 shows) comes out to $2625 (and this is about half the going rate for most musicians!)
- Costumes for both characters: $300
- Lights: $200
- Set: We're building them ourselves! $500
- Props: $200
- Marketing: $200
With any extra money we will be able to pay our musicians more, improve on sets, and increase the overall quality of our production.
Our projected dates for the show are mid December to early January, depending on securing the rights and funding.
This dream is so real to us and no matter what, we will do this show. Because we have to. Because we love it. Because it makes us feel ALIVE. Because it is a gorgeous piece of work and deserves to be honored in the highest fashion possible.
We are so excited! Help us make our dream come true!!

Risks and challenges
Things don't always go as planned! But we are doing everything we can to make sure to be as thorough as possible. We are currently moving forward in every area- applying for rights, rehearsals have started, the space is secured, but what if we encounter any delays in time, have to push back our dates, don't meet our funding goal, etc.?? The show MUST go on! We will find a way. Look out Hollywood! Here comes The Last Five Years!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
