Community theater is a uniquely American phenomenon. All over the country there are scores of extremely talented individuals who work hard during the day at their "paid jobs," and equally - if not more - passionately at night and on weekends as part of a unique family of thespians. Community theater brings together people from all walks of life for a common goal .... to participate in and provide to their hometowns outstanding theater of all kinds: musicals, comedys, dramas, revues and more. "Places!" is a heartfilled musical written for and about community theater, a toe-tapping look at the unique bonds that are formed when strangers come together through their common passion. Book, music and lyrics written by Danny Scott, of suburban Philadelphia, to memorialize the wonderful experiences and friends enjoyed by his family when they stumbled onto this underground world of local talent on behalf of their daughter. Danny agreed to put up "Places!" as a fund-raiser at the community theater that started their family journey and it's scheduled to open in February. But orchestrations take time and with a full time job and other volunteer commitments (Danny is also a volunteer EMT), the clock is ticking. A professional Los Angeles orchestrator has agreed to help for a cut rate price, but with a fund-raising budget of zero - it has become necessary to do fund-raising for the fund-raiser! It is hoped that the show will be a smash and go on to be seen in community theaters all over the country, applauding their efforts and special place in American towns.
Risks and challenges
Time is our biggest challenge! We have a professional orchestrator ready to help us at a discount price, knowing this is a project of the heart. Auditions are being held and rehearsal schedules are written, with the show to open in early February as a fund-raiser for a local community theater. We want to honor our community theater thespians, musicians and production staff with the best show possible! Great songs require great orchestras. We just need to raise the funds quickly so our orchestrator can complete his work in enough time for the cast and pit to learn their parts!
