Project Information

My name is Bizhan Khodabandeh. I'm a high school graphic design teacher. During the course of two years, I've dedicated some free time to working on a comic adaptation of Samad Behrangi's  The Little Black Fish. Behrangi was a teacher, activist, and leader. He purposefully wrote this story to teach important lessons to children while traveling Iran. To give you a short description of the story ... It is about a fish who unforgivably questions authority and is determined to learn through her own experiences. In the book, the little black fish embarks on a right of passage journey to find whether or not her friends' stories about the ocean are true. During her travels, she is confronted by various animals who try to persuade her from continuing and some who threaten her very life. The story provides an important example of one's determination in seeking the truth. I try to bestow a similar sensibility to my students. Like Behrangi, I find it important for the next generation to question and find their own path rather than rely on what authority figures have told them. The teachings of stories like, The Little Black Fish, as well as Behrangi's relationship to the leftist movement has caused many to speculate that his death was a political assassination. As a result, Behrangi’s funeral was turned into a mass demonstration. Behrangi was associated with the political group, The Iranian People's Fedai Guerrillas. One of the group's leaders -and friend to Samad Behrangi - was Bizhan Jazani. Jazani also happened to be a philosopher and visual artist. His paintings inspired the graphic style I chose for my adaptation. For myself, drawing the comic in this manor became a poetic understanding of the story's context. I find this story to be especially important during a time when Iranian youth have loudly been voicing their dissent. The comic functions as a nice artifact for Iran's cultural history of protest and retains the same educational value for youth around the world.  The comic is finished. I merely need to acquire enough funds to print 1000 copies of the 40 page book, perfect bound and in full color. Although, the affects of this book may be small, it is still important. I can not find better way to exemplify the importance of small truths than in a story about a firefly. After being questioned about the importance of the firefly's light, the bug states that, "Although my light might be small, it is still a light."  I'm asking for all of you to help me make this project possible.
