The Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall is a Labyrinth Lord™ supplement for the Chronicles of Amherth™ campaign setting that details the people, government, and geography of the Duchy of Valnwall. The Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall expands on the foundation laid by the critically acclaimed Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay and is specifically designed to give Labyrinth Lords a convenient sandbox setting to place their adventures.
Building a Shared Setting
The Duchy of Valnwall is a fantasy realm that was first introduced by Dan Proctor in the Labyrinth Lord™ core rulebook as an OGC map and brief setting overview. Third party publishers such as Small Niche Games, Faster Monkey Games, and Brave Halfling Publishing expanded on that setting with a number of quality OSR products. In keeping with that spirit of shared adventure, the Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall will be largely Open Game Content and an artless version will be offered for free under RPGNow's Pay What You Want Program. Just like the Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay, the goal is to provide professional and amateur publishers with a simple-to-use sandbox setting to share and publish their OSR fantasy adventures.
The Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall is packed full of usable content. All descriptions are painted in broad strokes and are designed to be easily adapted to your campaign. All NPC entries are fully statted for the Labyrinth Lord™ system. I'm estimating approximately 100-120 pages total, but that may increase significantly if the Stretch Goals are met.
The current book includes:
1. History of the Duchy of Valnwall
2. Overview of the Government (Banner, Power Structure, Military, etc.)
3. Overview of the People (Social Classes, Religion, Customs and Attitudes, etc.)
4. Overview of the Geography including Descriptions of:
- -Earldoms and Baronies
- -Cities and other Major Settlements
- -Details on the nearby Elven, Dwarven, and Halfling realms
- -Details on the local Nonhuman Tribes and their Goals
- -Interesting Locales (Ruins, Castles, Temples, etc.)
- -Major Factions and NPCs of Note
- -New Monsters
- -Random Encounters (fully statted)
- -Numerous Plot Hooks, Conflicts, and Adventure Ideas

One thing that turned out to be hugely popular with the Guidebook to the City of Dolmvay was the inclusion of personalized NPCs and saints for higher-level backers. This really allowed the backers to leave their mark on the product by having their characters "come to life" in the shared city setting. The Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall offers the same opportunity, so if you have a character you want to see illustrated and in print, please look closely at the pledge levels. The Duchy of Valnwall would love to become your character's new home!
Stretch Goals and the Special Edition Hardcover
Small Niche Games has assembled an excellent group of OSR authors to help out with the Stretch Goals. Each author is set to contribute an original mini-adventure that consists of a small dungeon, a few linked encounters, or an interesting locale filled with plot hooks, NPCs, threats, and challenges. These mini-adventures will be included in the Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall Special Edition hardcover edition which is available to backers who pledge $25 or more.
Stretch Goal #1: ($1250)

Anyone who has backed my previous Kickstarters knows I like to communicate frequently with backers via updates, emails, and comments. Progress reports will be sent out at least monthly to describe the overall progress and include select pieces of artwork and/or maps. I will also be available to answer questions and respond to feedback.
All money earned from Kickstarter pledges will be put towards artwork, maps, and paying contributors, so the more backing I receive the prettier the product will look and the more content it will contain.
I'm doing something a little different with this Kickstarter. Instead of ordering and shipping the books myself, I will be emailing fulfillment links to eligible backers. These links allow backers to purchase their copy of the Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall from RPGNow "at-cost" and have it shipped directly to their home. This not only helps lower the pledge levels, but also spreads the backer costs out over time, which is helpful for those of us who share bank accounts with our spouses. ;)
Risks and challenges
This is my fourth Kickstarter. All three of my previous Kickstarters funded and were fulfilled on time. No one can account for everything, but I like to think I've gotten a handle on all the common risks and challenges normally associated with Kickstarters.
Let me assure you that the Guidebook to the Duchy of Valnwall will be released. There is no question of that. The writing is about 75% complete. I plan to be finished with the entire project by the first quarter of 2016 at the very latest---quite possibly much sooner. A lot of it will depend on how quickly I get the art and maps back. I've also included several mini-adventures as stretch goals which will have to be fleshed out if those goals are met.
I have been publishing Labyrinth Lord™ and other OSR products (particularly adventures and setting sourcebooks) on a steady pace for the past four years, so I am no stranger to publishing. For those of you who don't know me, I hope my previous experiences with Kickstarter and my publishing history will help set your mind at ease.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
