Hollywood Mogul 4 is a business simulation, it's a turn-based strategy game, and it's a creative sandbox.
Hollywood Mogul 4 will take you into the depths of your creativity and imagination as you take on the role of studio head, hiring and firing the biggest names in Hollywood as you bring hundreds of movies to the Silver Screen. It will have two expansion packs: TV Shows, and Suits.
When I say I'm going to take you into the depths of the game, I mean it. Many of the reward tiers hard-code you into Hollywood Mogul 4. You'll be a part of every game played around the world.
About The Game
Hollywood Mogul is a text-based Business Simulation that puts you in charge of a major Hollywood movie studio. You can play against up to 9 other computer-controlled studios, or hot seat with your friends.
This isn't a 3-D on-the-fly graphics game with multiple camera angles ... it's a text-based strategy game for thinkers, and movie lovers, and money-makers, and dreamers. It's a game about choices.
Each movie you make has hundreds of options and all of them are factored into the box office results. Every choice you make ... and every choice you don't make ... can mean the difference between box office glory or financial disaster.
You own the studio. You run the studio. You make the movies.
All that's stopping you are writers, actors, directors, producers, and the world wide box office gross.
You choose the Source Material, like Comic Books, Novels, or Original Screenplays. You choose the actors, directors, producers, writers, shoot locations, production budgets, special effects budgets, marketing budgets, music scores, soundtracks, marketing strategies, post-release DVDs, and dozens of other decisions for each movie you make.
I'm not sure anything can really prepare you for the knot in your gut as the world map appears and the results of your current studio release roll in ... and you realize you may have a blockbuster hit on your hands. Or worse, the numbers roll in slowly, and you realize it's going to be a worlwide box office bomb.
You'll be making movies from more than 80 genres, set in dozens of time periods, with a myriad of attributes that include role requirements, story elements, special effects and pyrotechnic budgets
Will your horror film be the bloodiest ever, or the most intelligent well-written horror script ever brought to the screen? Will your love story require nudity? Will it be safer to go with a major movie star or are you going to discover new talent?
Will it be better to wait for a holiday release with your movie on the shelf as the studio monthly expenses mount up, or should you rush your movie into theaters? It's all in a day's work for a Hollywood Mogul.
Since 1994 Hollywood Mogul has taken you deep inside the business of movie-making. Hollywood Mogul is a business simulation, a creative sandbox, and a turn-based strategy game that puts you in the role of one of the most powerful people in Tinsel Town.
I thought the release of Hollywood Mogul 3 in 2007 was the last version I'd ever do. I'd written a computer game played in more than 50 countries, I'd had a Community Forum with thousands of members and more than a million page reads across tens of thousands of posts and replies. I'd taken all that down. I'd had a good run. I was done.
And then last year I began receiving emails asking about a 4th version of Hollywood Mogul. I had sworn I would never do another version because it takes over my life. But the number of emails progressed as the months went by. Then a fan started a new unofficial community forum. And the emails increased. And so ...
There are a number of things I'm going to improve.
I want to make Hollywood Mogul brighter and more fluid, with more images to spark your imagination.
I'm going to open the Talent and Source databases so there are no record limits. That means thousands of talent to choose from for all your movie-making needs. And more than likely, by the time the game is ready for release one or more player-created Talent databases will exist with real movie star names and images. Maybe even another player-created "Classic" Movie Star database will be ready, where you can put your favorite talent from the 30's, 40's, and 50's up against today's newest stars.
I'm going to add Relationships to the Talent Database. Marriages and Significant Others, Friends they like to work with, other actors with whom they have Chemistry, and a few other things to give the talent more depth.
I'm going to bring back Production Problems from Hollywood Mogul 2 which will add to the headaches and heartaches of your movie-making experience.
I'm going to update and streamline the Foreign Distribution Rights, amalgamating the number of overseas markets, but making it more interesting.
The Opening Credits
I'm going to improve your ability to create and enjoy the Opening Credits when you release your movies around the world and at a theater near you. That will make waiting for the worldwide Box Office results a little more bearable.
You'll already have selected a Studio Logo image, and a Studio Fanfare (the music that plays over the logo) file when you start the game. Now you can craft an Opening Credits sequence.
You'll be able to choose from a myriad of background images, and any font on your computer, as well as adding music, and fade-ins and fade-outs, cross-fading, and more. And like almost every other part of the game, you can add your own background images. With a little bit of creativity you can almost tell the story of your movie during the Opening Credits sequence.
Because it's your movie studio, your name appears as the Executive Producer in the credits, as well as all the talent names (above or below the title, based on what their agent negotiated). You'll be able to position each name, choose a font, and font color.
In the game, it might look something like this, from an early HM4 alpha game test:
This Opening Credits video capture includes the song "Wonderland" by Dexter Britain ( http://www.dexterbritain.co.uk/ ) and is used with his permission for this Kickstarter campaign.
Of course, if you don't want to take the time to do this, the game will choose a random default opening.
And I'm going to add dozens of images. Genre images, story type images, story location images, shoot location images. Plus, if history is our guide, hundreds of additional images will be provided by moguls around the world before the game is released. All of which can be shared by all the other players of Hollywood Mogul 4.
And of course you can add hundreds of your own images as well. There will be instructions and guidelines for naming conventions and everything else you need to customize the game and make it your own.
The release version of Hollywood Mogul 4 will sell for USD $29.99, but you get it with almost every reward on this Kickstarter campaign.
Hollywood Mogul 4 Expansion Pack 1: TV Shows
For years fans of the game have been telling me there isn't a good TV simulation out there. For years fans have been asking me to add this to the game. I'm going to create an Expansion Pack for Hollywood Mogul 4 that will add the ability for you to make your own TV Shows in the game. You'll create shows, or buy pitches, hire actors, get a show runner, and hope you hit that magic "season 5" mark where syndication kicks in and the rewards can be hundreds of millions of dollars.
You'll be able to put Movie Stars into your TV Shows, and take break-out TV stars and move them into your movies. You'll have down-and-out movie stars itching for a TV drama or sitcom role. You'll have the opportunity for Stunt Casting where you negotiate for Movie Star guest appearances on your TV shows. You'll deal with agents who want to know why their client isn't getting the kind of TV screen time they deserve just because the hot new up-and-coming flavor-of-the-month is getting all the great press coverage. You'll go inside the TV Business and you'll run your own TV division.
It's not a stand-alone game. TV Shows will be part of the Hollywood Mogul 4 movie studio environment, and it will require you to own Hollywood Mogul 4.
The release version of the expansion pack TV Shows will sell for USD $19.99, but you get it with many reward tiers on this Kickstarter campaign.
Hollywood Mogul 4 Expansion Pack 2: Suits
I'm going to add a Suits expansion pack that will test your mettle against a corporate legion calling for your head if the release of each of your movies doesn't meet their expectations. Or imagine facing bankruptcy after starting the game twelve billion dollars in debt because of your hostile takeover of an existing Hollywood studio.
You're already battling the box office, but in the Suits expansion pack you'll also be battling a board of directors as you fight for your right to keep on playing.
Suits is not a stand-alone game. It will be part of the Hollywood Mogul 4 movie studio environment, and it will require you to own Hollywood Mogul 4.
The release version of the expansion pack Suits will sell for USD $9.99, but you get it with many reward tiers on this Kickstarter campaign.
Additional Hollywood Mogul 4 Expansion Packs
Two other expansion packs are planned, but that's a surprise.
Why Kickstarter? Because I'm putting YOU in the game.
Why Kickstarter for Hollywood Mogul 4? Because I can't think of a better way to immerse fans and potential fans of the game into this new version. If you look at the rewards below, they are all about putting you into the game (and often your image). I'm going to give you the ability to become part of the most creative aspects of the game: The Source Database and The Talent Database. Through Kickstarter I can reach you all at once.
From the Complaint Department
Over the years people have complained that you cannot actually make a complete movie in Hollywood Mogul. Here's what I tell them: Pick your favorite movie. Have you done that? Okay, now think about your favorite scenes. Are you doing that? Okay, now ... what are the other 90 minutes about? That's why you can't actually make a movie in Hollywood Mogul. The art of storytelling is in fact an art. It sounds easy, but isn't. Hollywood Mogul removes all of the difficult parts of storytelling and lets you imagine your favorite scenes. And you have a very powerful imagination.
In Hollywood Mogul 4 you have the opportunity to let your imagination soar. You're the boss. You run the studio. Hollywood Mogul 4 is a sandbox in which you can create an entire world of money, prestige, and power. And you have the starring role.
The Future Is Ours
I want to make the best possible version of Hollywood Mogul. And to do that, I need you to take the journey with me.
Most of the sub-systems and underlying game architecture have already been designed. But there's game-play choices to be made, as well as finalized versions of algorithms and game flow decisions.
Exclusive Development Forums And Beta-Testing
I'll be creating a Kickstarter-backers-only development forum. Once you reach a certain level of the reward tiers, you will be allowed to beta test each development version of the game, and you get access to the special forums.
In the Development Forums you can maybe convince me and the other backers that a new genre must be added to the game, or that it is imperative that I include a financial report on this or that. Or you can just hang around and watch the game progress.
Most of the Rewards are designed to get you into the game. And I mean that literally. Most of the rewards of this Kickstarter campaign hard-code you into Hollywood Mogul 4.
Hard-code means that you'll become a permanent part of the game and cannot be removed. Even if the game databases are edited by players your contribution cannot be removed.
- The AUTHOR Reward
The Author Reward allows you to create a Source Database record. For example, you can choose to write a Graphic Novel record, or a Comic Book record, etc. They will remain hard-coded into Hollywood Mogul 4. The list of Source Databases is here: www.hollywood-mogul.com/source.htm
If you back this project through an author reward you will have the opportunity to send me:
- A Title
- Your name, as Author
- The Storyline
- The genre, from this list: www.hollywood-mogul.com/genres.htm
- The story attributes as described here: www.hollywood-mogul.com/storyattributes.htm
In the game it will look something like this:
I will create a "form" for you to contribute your source record to make it easier to do. You will have months and months to work out the details so don't panic thinking you have to do all this when you make your pledge. So think about it ... if you could write a story ... any story ... what would it be?
- Author Reward Special Situation
In the spring of each game year, Hollywood gathers to honor its own. If you create an Original Screenplay record you can contribute the information as described above. But also, you can contribute a digital head-shot of yourself. In the event that your screenplay record is nominated for Best Screenplay, your digital image will be displayed at the annual Hollywood Mogul Awards. You might even win a "Mogie."
- All Author Rewards
With all of the Author Rewards, your name will appear in the Opening Credits each time a player has chosen your contribution and made it into a movie. For example, if you've written a Novel record the Opening Credits will display: Based on the Novel "<Your Title>" By <Your Name>. It might look like this:
- TV PILOT WRITER Reward
If you pledge this project through the TV Pilot Writer Reward you will have the opportunity to send me:
- A title for the TV Show
- Your name, for the "Created By" credit
- The storyline
- The role requirements
- The story attributes
- A digital image of you in the event that an annual TV Awards is included
- The Writing Rewards And Translations
Please understand that I can only guarantee your Writing reward contributions for English-language versions of Hollywood Mogul. Hollywood Mogul is currently played in more than 50 countries, and I plan to have it translated into as many languages as funding will allow. It may not be financially possible to include all of the Writing awards for each translated Source database. But I'll do my best to ensure your contributions stay in the translated versions of the game.
The big thing in movies right now is Franchises of comic books, and video games. If you select the Franchise Reward you can create a franchise in these categories:
- Comic Books
- Graphic Novels
- Games (table-top RPGs, computer games, card collection, etc)
Friends With Franchises
Probably the easiest way to create a Franchise is to link up with your friends who have the same Author Reward as you and together all of you create a single franchise with each individual contributing one or more parts of the Franchise's whole.
Remember you will have months and months to work out all the details so don't think you all have to agree on a Comic Book superhero today.
- The Talent Rewards
If you don't want to write, you can choose to become part of the Talent database instead. If you pledge through any of the Talent Rewards, you will have the opportunity to send me:
- Your name
- Your bio
- Your digital image for display in the Talent Database, as well as for display at the game's annual Hollywood Mogul Awards ceremony
- Your game attributes
In the game it will look something like this:
Each Talent type has attributes that effect game play. Of course, your name will appear in the Opening Credits each time a player has hired you for their movie.
For producers and directors, their names appear at the beginning and at the end of the credits, a two-fer ...
- The Talent Rewards And Translations
All of the Talent Rewards will appear in all translations of Hollywood Mogul 4, though lengthy bios may not. Also, what might be considered a "funny" bio in English, may not translate well.
Real Movie Star Talent Database
It is illegal for me to include real movie stars in Hollywood Mogul. But there's nothing stopping you from doing it for your own game. Hollywood Mogul 4 will be very extendable and easily customized, you'll be able to change almost every aspect of the game. It's a pretty sure bet that by the time the game is released one or more Real Movie Star Talent Databases will be available for you to download.
All player-created content is free, of course. And remember, if you back Hollywood Mogul 4 you are hard-coded into the game. That means if you choose a Talent Reward you'll be in all the real movie star talent databases that get created.
Where Will The Money Go?
I'm a one-man operation, so all of the money raised through Kickstarter will be used in the production of Hollywood Mogul 4. That includes purchasing artwork, graphic elements, and all other development costs.
$180,000 - Expansion Pack 3
$240,000 - Expansion Pack 4
I believe it will take me 15 to 18 months to finish the game, though there will be working beta versions throughout almost the entire process for you to play. Please note that Hollywood Mogul 4 will only be delivered via the Internet, and that you must be online to activate the software. After you've activated, you do not need to be online to play.
People have asked me about an online multi-player version of Hollywood Mogul. There isn't any way to make it work, in my opinion. In a given game month I may have just a few things to do, then I want to move on to the next game month. But you may be in the middle of casting twelve movies. I'd have to sit and wait for you to finish. No ... online multi-player Hollywood Mogul doesn't sound like fun to me. Besides, the whole point of a turn-based strategy game is to think, and ponder, and fuss, and plan. I don't want you to be rushed into a decision. You can hot seat with friends at the same computer, but that's different. That's much more social.
Many of the reward tiers give you access to the special forums that will be created during the development of the game. There you will have your say as you try to convince me and the other backers that a new genre must be added to the game, or that it is imperative that I include a financial report on this or that. There will be many polls to help with game element decision-making and lots of early creation of additional images and real movie star talent databases.
Before pledging this project, please read the submission rules below.
I reserve the right to require you to change any Title, Storyline, attribute, biography, or message if I consider it in whole or in part to be vulgar or inappropriate. This is a family game, despite the unbelievable amount of gratuitous nudity that some of you will add to your movies with unfettered joy.
I invite you to help me make Hollywood Mogul 4 a reality. Thanks for taking the time to consider my project. And good luck at the box office!
Risks and challenges
The risks involved with software development are mostly time management issues. I've written the previous 3 version of Hollywood Mogul by myself, and I'm confident that I can make Hollywood Mogul 4 a game you'll enjoy for years to come.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
