About this project
My project is a book ! It's called The B-girl Guide: In the Context of Now -- Living Your Life in An Environmentally, Animal & People-Friendly Way and it's a work-in-progress. I could use your help to complete it!
The B-girl Guide will offer guidelines on things we can all do to live more consciously in our day-to-day lives. It will offer a grassroots sensibility with a rock 'n roll spirit. Part factual information, frequently asked questions, and actions you can take; the rest of the book will be stories - and shifts in my way of thinking - told via my experiences as a rock publicist, aromatherapy entrepreneur, and grassroots activist in New York City.
While many books focus on animals -or- the environment -or- people and society, my book will focus on all three. I am excited about completing it. But I need your help to get it done.
The B-girl Guide will be illustrated with images of the B-girl, my muse (in a sense) and the face of the aromatherapy line I created (also named B-girl). The book will offer practical suggestions on beauty, health, "green" living, care for the environment, and interacting with animals.
It is written for all of us navigating the twists and turns of trying to stay informed and meaningful in an increasingly commercialized and (at times) insane world.
I was a music publicist for over ten years working with amazing high profile artists. I left when I created my own line of aromatherapy oil blends -- where the name (and image) B-girl comes from -- which started getting written up in glossy magazines. One day the City of New York began mass spraying of pesticides - via helicopter! - and, outraged and alarmed, overnight I became a grassroots activist. I encountered dedication from people who valued change for the better and I found myself looking at everything I'd ever learned in new ways.
Instead of contact with music journalists, rock bands and record executives, I found myself moderating press conferences at New York's City Hall, dealing with political reporters and other media, working with City Council Members and community organizations, and writing a citizen journalism blog. A whole new world opened up to me with new perspectives.
My activism has focused on efforts around protecting the environment -- working to end mass spraying of toxic pesticides and planning creative events emphasizing the importance of reducing trash, recycling & reuse -- as well as ending war, and defending animals, wildlife, and public space.
The book offers my unique prescriptions for interacting with animals, the planet, and each other amidst the pressures and crises of daily life.
Publishing this book is a dream that I've had for a long time. But I am running low on funds! I need additional funds to help me through the next two months to complete writing the project and get it into people's hands and their lives! I would love your support.
On Kickstarter, if you don't raise the funds by the deadline you choose, you lose the money! So while I am looking to raise $6500, ultimately, $9000 would enable me to fully complete the written phase and also pay for design and printing. I plan to self publish the book, do my own P.R, and print the final result on 100% post-consumer recycled paper (maybe even tree free!) with non-toxic inks.
Please help me make a difference! Thank you!
