About this project
What Is The Time Travelling Freelancer?
The Time Travelling Freelancer (TTF) is a collaborative, living guidebook—a project to bring the freelance community together and give them a platform to connect, share information and contribute to each other's successes.
In it, we have interviewed established, successful freelance professionals and asked them one basic question:
"If you could go back in time and start again, what would you do differently?"
The Ideal ResourceIt's the question we've all asked ourselves at one time or another. With perfect hindsight, we'd all have reached our personal goals faster, enjoyed greater successes sooner and avoided the mistakes that now seem so obvious.
By answering that one question, our contributors cover every vital aspect of working as a freelancer:
• Formulating the initial idea
• Cultivating the essential mindset
• Finding the right clients
• Building a support network
• Gathering funding
• and much more...
The Time Travelling Freelancer Manual is the information from the coal face. We haven't interviewed any 'gurus' or 'coaches'. Just real people who have faced the daily challenges of freelance life and lived to tell, and share, the tale!
Taking The Concept Far Beyond The Guidebook
Having the information in an easy to read, indexed format is vital—but any guidebook can only do so much.
We want to take the TTF much further.
From our long experience in the freelance world, we know the most important factor in the success of any business is people.
Ask any freelancer and they'll tell you—meeting the right person at the right time played a huge part in their success.
Where Can A Freelancer Go To Meet The Right Person?
In a corporate environment, they’re known as the 'water cooler' moments—those times when you can sound your ideas off someone who’s facing the same challenges.
Connecting You Face To Face With The Answer
Bringing Everything Together In One Place
The TTF Manual is combining all the essential elements that you need as a successful freelancer:
- The latest, regularly updated information from working professionals
- A comprehensive network of fellow freelancers to connect with and share ideas
- The ability to communicate, one-to-one and in real time, with the people who can help most
In A Nutshell
We need the backing of the Kickstarter program to fund the initial gathering and putting together of the information from freelancers, as well as setting up our website and directory and to create the phone app that will let you select the professional you want to talk to.
We've received great feedback from our network and we're hoping that The TTF will grow to be a household name in the freelance world.
Who Is The Time Travelling Freelancer?
The concept for the Time Travelling Freelancer came about as a collaboration between two people with over 40 years experience working as and with freelance professionals.

Having been asked to join the Board of Down Business Park, Martin was delighted to have been elected to the position of Chairman of the Board of Governors and used his time in that role to further his work in supporting enterprise and innovation in micro enterprises in Down District.
Andy Callan is founder and owner at AC Copywriting, a freelance practice specialising in digital and content marketing, brand tone of voice, SEO and website optimisation.
Working both with agencies and directly with clients ranging from start ups to SME's, Andy has produced copy covering a vast range of different industries. He is a member of the Professional Copywriters’ Network.
Andy came to copywriting following a 15-year career as an award-winning freelance photographer and photojournalist. After 5 years shooting studio-based assignments for clients such as Nestle and Harrods, Andy began working on location—producing feature articles for various publications and stock images for the UK’s leading travel photography libraries.
In addition, Andy has been contracted to the country’s largest aerial photography company for the last 10 years, providing high-quality aerial images across Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He holds a Private Pilot’s Licence with the CAA and has amassed more than 4000 flying hours.
The Time Travelling Freelancer is Andy’s opportunity to share everything he has learned from nearly 20 years working as a freelance professional. He is passionate about supporting the community and providing a platform where fellow freelancers can connect with one another and allow the free exchange of ideas and advice.

Risks and challenges
There are risks involved with this project as with any novel project but we believe these to be quite low as the cost of delivery is low.
We believe the biggest risk is not hitting the funding target as that will mean that it will take longer to write the manual as we will not be able to work on it full time.
Not reaching the funding target will also mean that the mobile website that will host the TTF Manual will not have all the functions and features that we would want at launch.
We can make the project happen even without reaching the target. It will just take longer.
To address this risk Andy and I are fully committed to work as much as is required to inform as many people as possible about the project in the 60 days that the Kick-starter will run. It is our aim to have 50,000 hits on the page in that time.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
