Hi. I'm Jeff Galfer.
I'm an actor living in Los Angeles. I've worked on various television shows such as The River, Numbers, All My Children, and Law & Order. You may also have seen me in various commercials over the years as well as in stage productions around the country.
However, I have yet to live my dream of making a movie.
Roughly eight months ago, I decided that waiting around to get cast in a film was no longer acceptable. It has always been my dream to make a movie, it suddenly occurred to me that I was perfectly capable of making one on my own. Why wait?
Eight months later, I finished working on my script (yes, it took eight months to create 17 good pages of text) and not long after, my dreams of making a movie began immediately falling into place.
A good friend and co-worker from ABC's The River, Leslie Hope, read the script and showed her interest in directing it. For years, Leslie has been well known as an actress - you may have seen her on The River or on 24 as Kiefer Sutherland's wife - but, as of late, her interest has turned to directing. Her most recent film, GAYKEITH, has won a lot of acclaim from myriad festivals around the country. She also directed the documentary What I See When I Close My Eyes, which follows the street-living kids of Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Her documentary won several awards, sold to Moviola, and continues to screen all over the world. One of the industry's sharpest professionals, she brings top-notch creativity as well as oodles of experience to this project. www.lesliehope.com
Our producer, Jesse Collver, is a writer, producer and director himself. For the last six years, he has worked on CSI: New York and most recently wrote and directed his own short film, Stained. Along with havingdirected two short films and having produced multiple others, Jesse just finished writing his first, feature length script. Most recently, he joined Generosity Water; making multiple trips to Haiti last year as a videographer to raise awareness about the ongoing water crisis.
We have teamed up to create the short film I wrote: Buried Treasure.
As with any dream, we can't accomplish it all on our own without a little help from you.
The good news is that we have an entire crew working for us for FREE. That means that roughly 30 to 40 people (from actors to producers to crew members) believe so strongly in this project that they are willing to make an incredible looking short film and donate ridiculous amounts of time and energy...for FREE.
However, there are many more expenses involved than just having a crew. For instance, to feed that crew for four to five days will roughly cost us around $500 a day. Submitting our film to festivals will cost us roughly $500 in entry fees. Permits and location rentals for four days cost us roughly $3000. Even with a free crew and lots of donated services, we still have an expensive project ahead. They don't call it "Show BUSINESS" for no reason.
I humbly ask you, on behalf of myself and the crew, to help make this dream come true. You can be assured that your money is being donated to extremely competent industry professionals who want to make a movie that is truly special and memorable.
Thank you so much!
Yes. The movie is about the character I (Jeff Galfer) will be playing.
I found this site because I found a yellow, square piece of paper with the words "buried treasure" written on it. Why am I here?
Well, the treasure found you. We're all looking for treasure in one way or another. But, sometimes the treasure finds you.
It simply means you were destined to come to this page and read about this project. Whether you donate or not will be up to you. We certainly hope you do.
If you want, please take a picture of you holding the "treasure" next to where you found it. Send to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will post the photo!
Good question. We will be announcing the cast next week in a more exciting way than typing out the actors' names. I will say we are going to have some really fun, recognizable faces along for the ride.
There is a good chance I will release it online for our donors to read. I can't promise it yet because we are still making a few, minor changes here and there.
While it's true that it is very hard for a short film to make money, it's not necessarily a bad business venture.
Here are some reasons why:
We launched an instantly successful online marketing campaign capturing 1800 fans and followers in the first 5 days. Dedicated BURIED TREASURE fans are all now reading about and telling their 200 friends all about it daily. The geocache friendly love story tugs the social network heartstrings, and with that kind of popularity out of the "Social Marketing Starting Gate," imagine our popularity next week! and next month! and next year!
Carrying over our growing support base and selling BURIED TREASURE for downloadable viewing on i-tunes and Amazon offers a real opportunity to generate recognition and revenue.
Nowadays, producing a short film is one of the only viable selling tools to turn a script into a feature. BURIED TREASURE the short film could very well become BURIED TREASURE the feature-length movie, now playing in a theater near you!
All of our actors and crew members are working professionals, many of them already multiple award winners. Some of our cast and crew are newly established and on the rise. Either way, your investment pays off simply in the fact that you can now brag to all your friends and family! I helped them make it big! or simply, I helped them make their movie! Serious movie cred!!
Not sure yet. ;)
Along with the cast, we have some very exciting folks who have signed on to do the movie. However, same as the cast, we are going to wait and announce this in a week or two in a more exciting way than typing it out.
While lately the trend is to shoot shorts with a 5D Mark II or 7D, we will not be. No question. These are great cameras. And yes, we will have a 5D Mark II around. However, our extremely generous DP is bringing along a RED EPIC as our primary shooting camera.
For those of you who are film & tech geeks, this is the ultimate HD camera. In fact, the upcoming movie http://www.youtube.com/watch… was shot with this camera. Most DP's slobber over this pretty, little device. In fact, we want you to slobber over it as well. Please read about it on Red's website.
I heard the movie is about geocaching. But, it's called Buried Treasure. Do you even know anything about geocaching?
Silence of the Lambs wasn't about a bunch of sheep who don't talk. Buried Treasure isn't about a pirate's booty hidden in the middle of the ocean. Sometimes titles contain metaphors. Thank goodness or otherwise we would have spent three hours watching people eat when we all saw The Hunger Games.
Does the movie contain an element of geocaching? Why yes, it does. In fact, some of the crew and cast love to geocache! However, this movie is not a documentary and it is not meant to teach others how to geocache. Just like any subject matter, we've tried to take something we love to do and are fascinated by and tell a story around it - taking poetic license when necessary. To put it simply: our goal is to tell the story in the most entertaining and effective way possible.
Will it be icing on the cake if we introduce some newcomers to a great hobby? Of course! We can't all be Muggles forever, can we?
This is a project originated by me, Jeff Galfer. Therefore it is my, Jeff Galfer's, responsibility to fund it. The burden is on me. A good burden to have, though, and I'm enjoying the challenge of it.
The big names on this project have donated their time and creative efforts for FREE. Considering what some of our cast/crew could be making during the time they are making this project, this is a major donation already. And I couldn't be more grateful to have them onboard.
This leaves me with a 25K dollar bill. And since I'm not one of the big names on the project, I started a Kickstarter, which is why you are here. ;)
Absolutely! As much as we want lots of 10 thousand dollar donations, every little bit helps. Trust me. ;)
And remember, for 10 dollars (half the price of an IMAX/3D movie ticket), you are helping to PRODUCE a movie. You can say to everyone you know who sees it, that you helped make it happen.
Why yes! It's at http://www.buriedtreasurethemovie.com
A great actor by the name of http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2772701/. You should check him out. It's our preliminary poster and we will be reworking it with real stills from the shoot once our shoot happens. Bill will be guiding us through that process along the way.
No. Probably not.
At the end of the day, it's tough for the short film format to make money. That doesn't mean it is impossible, but it probably will not.
Well, look. The cast, crew and script for this film are top notch. Once the film is finished, we will submit to festivals and get the film some attention through those festivals. Ideally, this will mean connecting our cast and crew to a vast network of other filmmakers and audience goers; potentially leading all of us to more and more jobs and opportunities.
You are not just making my dream come true. You could be making many dreams for many people come true. All for the price of a fast food meal or a pack of cigarettes or a computer game. You get the picture.
Nothing. Everyone who is on Kickstarter is fighting for a dream.
However, I can assure you with this particular project that once your money has been donated, it will not be the last time you hear about the film. We have taken on this endeavor to make the best and most high quality short film we can make. That's why we have enlisted the cast and crew we have enlisted. We want nothing less than the best.
