think about all of the packaging used in our food system.. we cannot wait to bring you all of your grocery needs minus the bottle.
In August 2010, we opened a small environmentally friendly store in Holland, MI called Tree Huggers. We wanted to provide the community with a place to ask questions and get information on how to go green. We selected a wide variety of recycled, locally made and organic items for the store. We quickly grew into a second store in Grand Rapids at the corner of Wealthy and Diamond, and that's where I met Ryan.
Ryan started Bartertown, a vegan-vegetarian restaurant in GR. Because of his delicious food, we became good friends. Ryan, like many other vegans in the area, finds it hard to shop for locally sourced and responsibly grown "real" food and convinced me that Tree Huggers should incorporate groceries into our store. I agreed, but only if we could do it package free - meaning no plastic bottles or bags. We want to create a place that you can come in and get anything you need... minus the plastic. Vegan sandwiches and sides made in-house. Wholesome vegan-vegetarian food at your disposal, with the ability to purchase as much or as little as you would like. In this vision, many items will be made by Bartertown and sourced by local farms and businesses. Items will change as the seasons change and everything will be fresh and wholesome and REAL!
And that’s were YOU come in. We need you to help bring this idea to Grand Rapids, and eventually to Holland. A store where you can bring in your own jars and bottles and get tofu, nuts, pasta and hot sauce by the ounce. The sky is the limit on what we can bring in, but before we can offer these items we need coolers and, not just one sink, but four! We also need plumbing and have some minor construction to do. Your help is very much a part of our success.
We would never just ask for you to give us money (although we wont say no if you do) so we came up with some kick-ass incentives to inspire you to help with our cause. Vegan cooking classes, reusable limited edition goods, consulting services… all things you can really use.
Help us bring you Real Food by Real People... and without all the wasteful packaging.
