Meichen and I (Shan) started this project while studying in Cambridge University five years ago, wanting to solve a problem of my mum not remembering whether she had taken her meds or not.
With the mindset of a hacker, I taught myself to design Memo Box using CAD software. Walking into a factory, I learnt that, making a manufacturable product, was vastly different from the conceptual design and the 3D printing of a prototype. Injection defects such as burs and flow marks and how to avoid them in design were the real challenges of developing a product. We learnt this the hard way. Our first set of tooling was scrapped, as it was just not good enough. The cost for perfecting the product was beyond financial terms. Our delivery to 2014 Kickstarter Campaign backers was delayed for a year. Eventually in 2016, the Reddot award jury validated our efforts with an award - an internationally renowned seal of quality.
Memo Box Mini, is the continuation of the story where we wanted to prove to the Kickstarter community that having faith in a fledging team like us, we can grow to deliver, eventually. The technology, design, quality control, and supply chain resources have all been accumulated from the last campaign. Now, this new campaign, is where we want to thank you and to show you how much we have grown.

For most hardware projects there are a certain number of obstacles to overcome, however, the good news is, we are not new to this. Learning from valuable (and sometimes painful) experiences over the last two years, we have identified the main risk factors and invested considerable amounts of time to avoid potential setbacks.
One common issue was with complicated injection moulding, which is the main cause of defects. We overcame this by producing the tooling in advance and completing trial runs, including sending pre-production samples to reviewers for honest feedback, so we could discover any material imperfections early, before large-scale production.
Another issue we encountered was the sourcing of reliable suppliers. The development of other Memo Box versions has enabled the building of solid relationships and sourcing of the back-up suppliers.
Lastly, we have minimized logistical issues with delivery--for instance, lost, damaged or delayed packages--by partnering with reliable logistical companies and improving our service systems, which means that we can better communicate with our backers both during and after the campaign.
A final bonus--after backers receive their rewards, the firmware and software will be upgraded in real-time over the air, so the user experiencewill be constantly improving!
