About this project

Hi,

We are about 2 weeks away from the premiere of my new piece Devouring Devouring and, thanks to 34 generous backers, just $1,937 away from our goal!

Won't you help us make it to $4,000 by December 11th?

Attention: by giving us money through this kickstarter campaign you have the opportunity to receive your own florescent penis handcraftedby Magdalena Jarkowiec, our costume designer. Need I say more?

OK. i will say a bit more:

I am creating my first evening-length work. It premiers at La MaMa's Ellen Stewart Theatre on December 13th-16th, 2012. The piece, Devouring Devouring, features fierce performers from New York and Tel Aviv whose singular movement sensibilities are deeply ingrained in both locales. It contends with the relationship between how and where one dances. The dancers in the work embody a clash of aesthetic modes, ranging from detailed and robust physicality to formalized postures hinting at Baroque iconography. The final work is meant to question how the viewer categorizes and ranks certain forms on stage. Why do we make sense of some actions and postures while others completely elude us?

Developed in two cities more than 5,000 miles apart, Devouring Devouring evolved through long-distance video exchanges as well as repeated residencies in New York and Tel Aviv over the past two years.

Imaginative artists from different mediums are creating this ambitious piece with me. The original sound score is by LA-based composer Mark degli Antoni. Set and lighting are by designer Lenore Doxsee, and costumes and fabric creations are by Magdalena Jarkowiec, an Austin-based street artist. Devouring Devouring was created in collaboration with these wildly articulate and powerful performers:

Joanna Kotze, Toni Melaas, Stuart Singer, Ofir Yudilevitch, and Jesse Zaritt.

Making this piece cost a lot of money.

Around $50,000 actually. But we are only $4,000 short! Please help us make it safely to the shores of the NYC premier on Dec 13th.

What do I need your $ for?

$600 for Sandy. We had 40 hours of rehearsal scheduled for the week that the storm hit. All of our studio bookings were in lower Manhattan and were in venues where I am Artist In Residence so it was all supposed to be free. But, as you know, lower Manhattan was hit hard and shut down. I had to scramble to reschedule those hours last minute in various studios in Brooklyn. I was luckily able to find rehearsal space but it cost me about $15 per hour.

$1,200 for the US work visa that Ofir Yudilevitch needs in order to perform in this country. This is in addition to his two round-trip flights from Tel Aviv to NYC.

$2,200 for the people working in the theater who's job it is to hang and focus the lights, connect cables, hang curtains, move set pieces around, etc. These important people belong to a union - - which means that even though we don't really know how many hours we will need them for, we will definitely need to have access to at least $2,200.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING THIS FAR AND FOR THINKING OF SUPPORTING OUR ART

onward with thnx,

Netta

Risks and challenges

Challenges?

Making a dance takes a lot of time, committed energy, money, endurance, and passion.
My art-making entails a dependence on other humans to be engaging with my ideas.
It also entails finding and paying for a space equipped for dance that is large enough to house the big pieces that I tend to create. In crowded NYC this is a very real and constant struggle.
Making a dance also entails so many other responsibilities, most of which I never imagined I would have to deal with and am not very good at. As one example - the amount of administrative and bureaucratic work that went into the international collaboration that was part of the development of Devouring Devouring was astounding.

BUT - the challenges are MANY and are ALWAYS there. I know them intimately.

I also know the potential of live performance to be incomparably powerful, viscerally affecting, and poetic; while all the while fleeting.

So for me there is no real choice.
