About

I've always had a passion for gardening and the outdoors, but in the last several years my earth babies have taken on a much greater importance in my life. As a veteran of the Marine Corps and a survivor of an abusive relationship, gardening has provided relief from anxiety and PTSD. Collecting first cacti, and then succulents, trading starts with friends and strangers it has become more than just therapy and a past time. I want to share my passion with consumers and plant lovers by having a diverse selection of nursery plants and creating inventive planters for succulents and baby cactus. I want to have a larger selection of cacti and succulents than any of my local nurseries, and create indoor and outdoor decorative pieces that incorporate cacti and succulents into your decor.

I already have around 50 mother plants, and 30 cuttings that will be ready for sale in the next couple of weeks. I want to start with at least 2 mother plants for each kind of succulent and cactus I sell because of their slow rate of growth. There are several nurseries specializing in succulents and cacti that I have picked out to purchase plants in bulk from, most of which will be used in the first batch of products I sell, while a few will become more mother plants. The planters that I purchase for use rather than make will also be purchased in bulk to reduce startup costs. Initially I will be running my business out of my home and backyard where I already have a large garden and plan to make a greenhouse using pvc pipe and plastic sheeting to help ensure survival of my baby plants, and I would like to be bringing in a profit for 3 consecutive years before looking into finding other facilities. A nursery license to sell plants through the county is $150 and a fictitious name license is $50.

Risks and challenges

The plants take time to grow, and I will need to produce twice as many plants as I sell to keep continual stock, so I will need to purchase more plants to use as mother plants as well as for the intial stock I am going to sell.
Initially I plan to start out online as an Etsy shop and as I have more products to sell I will purchase a stall at our local flea market and any other local street vending opportunities.
For advertising purposes I plan to make stickers, work with other local small business' and use social media.

    Shellulant

I purchase all my shells from a local store in Capitola, CA and have been putting one small succulent in each one. All the shells are different sizes and shapes, and there are a variety of different colors as well. Each one is outfitted with one healthy succulent on a bed of sphagnum moss to keep it contained and give it a growing medium while not being as dirty or heavy as soil.
