About

It has been a great few years on the Mid Wales Arts scene - with Erwood Station Craft Centre hosting a plethora of arts events. Given this climate, now is the time to convert our derelict third carriage into a useable space. Following our 'Summer of Great events', which ran outdoors and relied on the sun shining, it has become apparent that to continue to support our local Welsh artists throughout the year we need to develop a permanent indoor space to 'be creative' in, a venue for workshops and demonstrations as well as for the use of the local community.

So please help us make this happen! We need your donations to help raise £5000.00

Our Ethos: To restore and preserve the history of the Mid Wales Line, its memorabilia and the remaining station buildings. We pride ourselves on being local. We are the only craft centre in the UK that is supporting over 100 Welsh artists. We sell only Welsh handmade crafts, and have done since 1984!

The story so far: Since its inception in 1984, the previously derelict station has been restored alongside two train carriages from the GWR line and an old Victorian signal box. The restored carriages provide a space for artists to exhibit and the signal box makes an excellent bird hide. It has taken a band of enthusiastic volunteers working together with skilled professionals to get us to where we now are.

What makes us unique: Where else can you admire a beautifully restored locomotive, learn or watch a new craft and the have tea and homemade cake while sitting in a restored train carriage overlooking the tranquil river Wye?

The future: We have a third carriage on site that needs a lot of work to make it a useable space for use by artists, school groups, NFP organisations, community groups and charities. We already have interest in the use of our potential creative space but this relies on us completing the restoration successfully.

We cannot wait to get started. The creation of the venue itself will happen as soon as we have the monies and the volunteers! We hope to begin the work in September 2013 and look forward to using this exciting new space!

Erwood Station is well known throughout Wales as a centre of excellence and over the past few years we have expanded and look forward to the future.

Risks and challenges

Since 2008 I have restored an old locomotive with friends, volunteers and two specialists. We have also refurbished the inside of two carriages, and now really need to make the last carriage look as good as the rest.
The project is part of a bigger vision to make Erwood Station a sustainable all inclusive venue for everyone's delight.
I plan to renovate the third carriage, creating a venue that can be used all year round.
The obstacles involve the Welsh weather and the lack of funds.
We need to involve builders and restorers as well as volunteers because of the great age and the fragile state of the carriage.
We will tackle this project with enthusiasm and hard work.

Please feel free to join us and lend a hand, whatever your expertise or lack of, we will appreciate your help.
You will help to make a difference.

Many thanks,
Michael Cunningham
