The End is Nigh

Posted by Planetary Annihilation Inc (Creator)

Fellow meat sticks,

I come here today to give a wholehearted THANK YOU to everyone who backed us, tweeted, Facebooked, and stood on an overpass with a sign. It has been deeply humbling to see all the support. We are profoundly grateful to our fans who backed us, the press that has been so kind to post stories, and our colleagues, friends, and family that have supported us through all the emotional ups and downs.

The time has come to shut down the Kickstarter for Human Resources. Every Kickstarter prediction model is showing that we will come up woefully short of our goal. Running a Kickstarter is a full time job for several people. As a small indie, we can’t continue spending time and money focusing on a project that won’t get funded. We simply don’t have the human resources. #seewhatididthere

So what happens now? After we've spent some “recovery time,” which consists of a dark room and probably some sobbing, Nate and I will regroup and figure out what to do next. Who knows what the future holds for Human Resources? One thing is for sure, Human Resources, as pitched in this Kickstarter, is over. But we adore the world of Human Resources and will endeavor to do what we can to bring it to life in some form.

If you wish to find out what we do next, feel free to follow us:

Thank you again for all your support. We are truly touched by all the positive responses.

Yours in the apocalypse,

John Comes

Reminder: Because this game did not fund, Kickstarter will not take any of your pledge money and we will be unable to deliver any tier rewards.

Apocalypse in Peril

Hello, fellow hors d'oeuvres,

The day of reckoning is nearly at hand, and it doesn't look too hot for the old squids and robots. Here's where we're at, in a nutshell (via Kickspy):

The good news is that we brought in more yesterday than the day before, and that's a reversal to be proud of. That's partly because of the new Harbinger offering, and it may also be linked to our appearance on the front page of Imgur. You guys really did a great job getting the word out.

And now the bad news. To fulfill the $50k one-day goal, we need to bring in nearly twice as much tomorrow as we brought in yesterday. But as daunting as that goal is, it masks an even darker reality, which is that to get to full funding, we would need to average a daily tally of nearly $70k. That's a whole lotta dough, every day for the rest of the campaign.

Goonies never say die, but at this point we can probably only be saved by a Goonies-style haul of pirate gems. So, I dunno. Everybody search your attics for old maps with doubloons hidden in them.

I just wanted to say how moved we've been by the effort that our backers and well-wishers have made on our behalf. We've read the tweets and blog posts, we've upvoted your Reddit links, we've liked your Facebook posts. In all my years in this industry, I have never seen such passionate supporters. It means a lot to us that you guys like this idea as much as we do. It means everything, actually.

And since we're gushing, we found lots to like in your tier reward suggestions. Personally, I absolutely love the idea of letting backers send in recordings of themselves screaming, and adding those screams at random to the general human crowd noise. I also like the signed poster idea. And an honorable mention goes to the guy who suggested we add weapons that fire human kidneys.

Final product may differ from concept.

Anyway, we will be meeting with the directors at 2 PM tomorrow to decide whether to pull the plug on the campaign. We'll let you know the result of that meeting soon afterwards. If Human Resources survives that meeting, we'll assess our reward options and see what we can do to jazz things up for our backers.

It's been a wonderful ride, you guys. No matter what happens, there will always be a little place in our hearts for everyone who shared the dream of skyscraper-wielding tentacle monsters.

Clouds on the Horizon

Hello, Robo-snacks,

Well, the numbers are in, and they're pretty mixed. Our Friday take fell off by about a third, relative to the previous day (chart courtesy of Kicktraq):

Given that we have three more tries to see if we can hit 50k (Monday being the deadline), it's not encouraging that our last full day of funding fell short of that goal by more than half. That said, the addition of the $60 tier and the exclusive Harbinger variant happened late in the day yesterday, so any bump we see in the numbers may show up in today's count (which at 2:20pm actually looks pretty good).

We won't know the full effect of adding the new tier until tomorrow, but it's hard to imagine getting anywhere near the 50k goal today. Unless Taylor Swift can tear herself away from Total Annihilation for long enough to make a pledge. Come on, Taylor. You're going to have to press pause to pay the pizza dude, anyway.

Which leaves us wondering what else we can do. We have focused on getting the trailer in front of more people, and that approach has met with some success. But the enthusiasm with which our existing backers embraced the new Harbinger tier suggests that we could be doing more to entice folks to higher tiers (and quite a few comments echo this sentiment).

So I'll put it to you guys: what kinds of rewards would you like to see at $40 and above? To keep things sane, I'd like to add the following caviats:

  • The rewards cannot be physical below the $125 tier. Fulfillment and shipping costs are such that sending stuff in meatspace gets really cost prohibitive. So our options for the initial tiers are limited to things that can be delivered in the form of ones and zeroes.
  • The rewards cannot break the game. Yes, an instant game-ender unit would be cool to have, but it's not fair to adversaries who may not have your resources, Moneybags McGee.

Within those constraints, we'd love to hear your craziest, most exciting ideas. Right now, I'm tempted to suggest something like adding new exclusive Harbinger units to every tier at $90 and up. Assuming the designs were super rad, would you consider bumping up a tier or two?

Then again, that's pretty linear thinking, taking the thing that worked yesterday and repeating it all the way up the line. Maybe there's something else we haven't thought of? Sock it to us!

I'd also like to add that we still need those eyeballs. It's so exciting to see everybody bumping up to higher tiers, but we need to bring in quite a few new supporters if we're going to have any chance of making it. In case it isn't already painfully obvious, I am not a marketing expert, so if you've got any idea how to get us on the front page of r/games, I'm all ears. Likewise, anybody who wants to run an article on the state of Human Resources, I will totally dish all sorts of dirt on John Comes' bizarre hygiene practices.

Monday's the day. Our hearts are swollen with gratitude for the hope you've given us over the past week, but the math is pretty unforgiving. If we've got a chance at clearing the rim, we'll hang in there. But if we're still headed for an airball, we'll have to pack it in.

Which would suck, because we've never wanted to make a game so badly.

Thanks as always,

Nate Simpson

New Tier with a Sweet New Unit

Posted by Planetary Annihilation Inc (Creator)

Hey everybody, there's a new tier! And it comes with a new reward!

By popular demand, we're adding a $60 tier. And what you get with that tier is an exclusive Harbinger unit (the one with which you start the game). Behold, THE SPAWN OF THE MOST ANCIENT:

Remember, everybody who pledges at $60 or above will get this puppy.

Tell your friends, Facebook it, blog it, Vine it, Snapchat it, and be sure to tweet about it to Taylor Swift. Man, she's going to be excited about this!

Off to rest my drawing hand,

Holy mackerel, the last 24 hours have been amazing! You guys put the paddles on our chest, yelled “clear,” and gave us quite a zap. The patient is stirring! Here is our funding progress:

That red line is where we were. Dreadfully close to a flat line. The yellow line projects where we’d end up if we maintained the current cadence all the way to the finish line (which itself is a very tall order, but it’s a huge improvement over where we were). Note that it still falls a few hundred grand short of the target. The green line shows what we need to achieve to actually hit our funding goal. We’ve still got a long way to go.

I can hear many of you shouting at me, “but Nate, those straight lines are misleading! Kickstarter projects always see a bump at the end!” And you are right, wise internet citizen. If we could even maintain that yellow line until Halloween, we might have a shot at glory at the very end. We’d at least be in the hunt. But please keep in mind that the yellow line is extrapolated from a very short-term gain that may prove to have been a transitory bump, rather than a sustainable flow. There is hope, but we’re trying to be realistic.

That said, this is still astonishing and unexpected progress, and the mood here is (clicks over to ebullient! The music of the moment is Number One, from that awesome montage in Real Genius.

And who were the real Most Valuable Pledgers yesterday? Everyone on the Human Resources team is doing a slow clap for the people who upped their pledge amounts. That had a huge effect on the numbers. John brought up the page showing where the funds were coming from, and there was a sea of red “modified pledge amount” tags. We felt like Jimmy Stewart at the end of It’s a Wonderful Life.

Every time a bell rings, a squid monster eats a human.
Every time a bell rings, a squid monster eats a human.

We want to reward you guys in a substantial way for stepping up to the plate like this, so we’re working hard on enhancing the tier rewards. We have been reading your suggestions (who knew the word “suck” could be used so creatively?) and discussing our options, and we think we have something pretty cool to add to our tiers. Watch this space for an update, which will come as soon as I can draw the non-sucky thing we’re planning on adding.

Thanks so much guys. We’re doing it.
