Hello! My name is Steve Hartsoe, and I’m a singer, songwriter and guitar player living just outside of Raleigh, North Carolina. I’ve been gone from music for a long time—almost two decades—after putting my creative life on hold when the “real world” beckoned and raising a family became my priority. Now I’ve returned and I’m excited to be releasing my new album, “The Big Fix (Deluxe Edition)”
CCR, Cash, Beatles
My earliest memories of songs were from my mom playing amazing guitar music when I was a kid—Creedence, Johnny Cash and The Beatles were on constant repeat in our house. I was also heavily influenced by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and a lot of the roots-rock bands that came out around that time.
I eventually began writing my own songs, and in the '80s and early '90s I ended up in a San Francisco Bay Area band called London Down, which later became The Raging Marys. We released two albums, got radio airplay from as far away as France and toured the West Coast a lot. After the band broke up, I started a “normal job” as a journalist and managed to put out an album and a few demos on cassette. But as I built my career and raising a family took over, I figured my days of playing clubs and releasing albums were over.
Not Done Yet
Fast forward to many years later. In 2014, my wife Shannon gave me a Father’s Day gift of time at a recording studio. I threw together some songs, and it was truly a family affair with my then-14-year-old son Eli playing drums on the recording. My good friend Wahba, who owned the studio, helped turn my demo into a four-song EP, which became my release called “Neo-Traditional” that was distributed digitally.
Things began happening again with my music.
The band that was thrown together for my studio sessions began playing live, and I wrote some new songs. Eventually we ended up with a 10-song album titled “The Big Fix,” which was released digitally and on CD in late 2016. The title track is a tribute to Shannon and all we’ve overcome in nearly 20 years of marriage. My Tom Petty influence is also on display here, with a cover of his song “Trailer” on the album.
Remix, Remix Again
That would have been the end of the story -- the album would be out, and I’d be promoting it. But I later released a remixed version of the first single from “The Big Fix,” called “One Last Tear.” It generated some positive attention, which meant a lot to me because the song is about my mom’s last days before she died in 2009. When she was in the hospital a few days before she passed away, I was at her bedside when a single tear rolled down her cheek. I think it was her only way of saying goodbye.
When “One Last Tear” was well-received, I thought about remixing “The Big Fix” in its entirety. The bigger, radio-ready sound of the remix would be perfect for the rest of the album, and it would enable me to get the project out to even more radio stations, bloggers, music magazines, and fans of the classic rock style that I grew up with and was influenced by when writing these songs.
This Is Where You Come In
Let's make this happen! I’ve created a budget of $1,800 for the remixing, remastering, distribution and promotion of "The Big Fix-Deluxe Edition." This budget also covers adding five bonus tracks (two of them new original songs). I see many high-dollar campaigns on Kickstarter, but since the tracks from my album are already finished, it won’t take as much to get the remixes done. I’ve invested all the money for the tracking of the songs, so I’m asking you to partner with me for the $1,800 I need to finish the bigger album and get it to a larger audience.
Prizes For Pledges
If we don’t reach the goal of $1,800, your credit card won’t be charged, none of the prizes will be sent out, and I’ll have to pull back on plans for “The Big Fix (Deluxe Edition).”
If we exceed the goal, then I’m thinking that a vinyl release of "The Big Fix-Deluxe Edition" would be an amazing way to celebrate the launch of this project!
So, how can you help me achieve this goal?
- Take a look at my “Thank You” pledge packages on the right sidebar of this page, and choose your favorite! You can pick from digital downloads, signed CDs, personalized songs, co-writing my next song with me, and even a personal house concert!
- My campaign ends in 21 days, and I’ll be turning around the project quickly—you’ll have this music on your doorstep in October!
- Help spread the word by sharing this fundraising campaign through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Linked In, blogs, emails, texts, or even a phone call to a family member or friend. Sharing this page with just a few people can make a huge difference in helping me achieve this goal. Even if you can’t contribute, sharing is just as important!
Keep It Going
Well, there you have it. Three decades later and I’m still going, thanks to the support of so many of you along the way. I would love for you to join me on this musical adventure, and get “The Big Fix-Deluxe Edition” remixed, remastered and distributed far and wide. I’m living proof that anyone can live out their musical dreams no matter how long they’ve put them on hold. So let’s keep this classic rock sound going. Thank you for checking out my campaign, and I greatly appreciate your support all along!
Risks and challenges
This project is essentially risk-free. Because we've already recorded the instruments/tracks and used them on the original version of "The Big Fix," we do not need to start from scratch as if we were recording a new album. Your financial pledge will pay for giving these tracks a more polished, higher-quality, radio-ready sound than what we were able to achieve using laptops. We'd also add some bonus tracks. The remixing and remastering would be done by Kevin McNoldy, a top-notch music producer / recording engineer / mixing engineer / mastering engineer who has worked with artists including Dave Matthews and Mary Chapin Carpenter.
The money would also be used to pay for manufacturing CDs, distributing the album digitally and sending it to radio stations, music bloggers and others to get it in front of more people.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
