About

In the near future, humans begin colonizing the stars. Much to their surprise, they discover a planet with new, alien forms of life. True to their barbaric origins, the humans are quick to capture and imprison the natives. A dividing debate begins about their fate. Two groups emerge: the pacifists, who seek peaceful coexistence, and the exterminationists, who wish for mankind to remain alone in the universe.

Unknown to the humans, a single courageous alien escapes. Armed with the powers of shapeshifting and mind-reading, our hero passes among the humans unseen in a steady quest to liberate his friends. His name is Bob.

The humans soon realize he has gone missing. And so goes the cry: “Get Bob!

Bob, the alien.
Bob, the alien.

Get Bob! is a social deduction game for mobile devices. It’s a game where friends get together and lie to each other shameless to win. Sound fun? It is! … until your best friend votes to have you assassinated.

Your phone or tablet executes a vast array of customizable rules while handling the game mechanics so you don’t need cards, a game board, or a referee. You can play anytime, anywhere. Just whip out your phone and the fun begins.

At the start of the game, players are randomly divided into three allegiances: pacifist, exterminationist, and Bob. Each team needs to accomplish different goals to win. Each player uses deduction, observation, guile, and special powers and items to coordinate victory with other players.

Allegiances.
Allegiances.

Each round, players interact in open conversation or secretly though the game’s chat to determine the identity of others. After each round, there is an election where two officers are chosen: the Captain and Marshall. Each officer has privileges that benefit their team.

Officers.
Officers.

Following each election, there is a referendum where everyone gets to suggest an action. A number of choices are available---including imprisonment, investigation, assassination---most targeted at another player so enemies can be removed from the game.

We love card and board games but sometimes they can be a pain. You lose one card from the deck and you can’t play anymore. You forget to bring the game to a party and you can’t play. No place to put the board: %#^&!!!

Get Bob! is different: all you need is your phone. Anytime, anywhere.

Traditional card and board games also don’t offer much in the way of customization. What if you want to change one of the rules? What if you want to change five? Below you will find some of the many settings you can customize in Get Bob! to make a special game that is balanced just for you and your friends. With freedom like this, Get Bob! has virtually endless replay value. And don't worry, we also have a really easy Vanilla Settings mode that is ready to play immediately without any having to worry about customization.

Another important advantage is found in the unique game mechanics. We have recently patented the software system and we guarantee the mechanics offer a new kind of gaming experience unlike any other you have ever had, definitely something you can't recreate with a simple board and cards.

Gameplay occurs in rounds of debate, election, and referendum. During debate, players are scoping each other out, trying to figure out who their allies are and who is an enemy in disguise. At the end of each debate, players use their mobile devices to elect two officers: the Captain and the Marshall. Both officers have special privileges as we will explain shortly.

Progression of gameplay.
Progression of gameplay.

After the officers have been chosen, each player is allowed to secretly propose one referendum (again, using their mobile device). There are a variety of referendums to choose from: including investigation, assassination, imprisonment, and endorsement. Each player gets to choose one action and a player they want to apply it to. For example, Taylor can propose to assassinate Robert.

Referendums.
Referendums.

In most cases, more than one person will propose the same thing. For example, three players might want to assassinate Robert (poor guy!). The game software randomly selects up to five proposals and passes them onto the Captain. If multiple people have proposed the same action, that action has a proportionately higher chance to be selected.

So let’s say ten players proposed actions like this (Robert wants to imprison Daisy, Eve wants to assassinate Robert, etc.):

Example of 10 referendum votes.
Example of 10 referendum votes.

The odds for the software selecting each action would look like this, with multiple votes for the same action increasing the odds proportionally (so if 3 people out of 10 vote for an action, the odds that action is selected would be 3/10 or 30%):

Summary of the 10 votes from above.
Summary of the 10 votes from above.

So let’s say the software picked five proposals: 1) assassinate Robert, 2) investigate Mai, 3) imprison Taylor, 4) imprison Daisy, and 5) investigate Luke. This selection would be passed to the Captain for review. The Captain has the ability to veto all but two proposals with the remaining two passing on to the Marshall for implementation. If the Captain already knows Daisy and Taylor are allies and thinks Robert might be an enemy, he/she could veto like this to protect team mates while also removing a potential threat:

Captain's choice.
Captain's choice.

The Marshall is the actual executor of referendums and gets to decide whether to implement just one or both of the proposals handed down by the Captain (at least one must be executed). Once the Marshall chooses, the selected referendum(s) activate and the next round of debate begins. So if the Marshall also feels doubtful about Robert’s identity but knows Mai is an ally, he/she might choose like this (resulting in Robert’s untimely death):

Marshall's orders.
Marshall's orders.

As you can imagine, there is a lot of strategy involved in the voting process. Players can even make offers to each other secretly in the chat, committing their vote to a certain election candidate or referendum in advance of the actual vote. This offers the opportunity for players to coordinate actions or earn trust by showing another player what they are going to do. Players also have the ability to Back Out of an initial commitment when the vote arrives and vote something else but such a move will be alerted to the player who received the initial commitment, letting them know they were fooled.

In-game chat screen.
In-game chat screen.

Depending on your game settings, we also offer a mode called Sleight of Hand where each player gets a chance to back out of a commitment without being detected. Players who have learned something about another through a special power or item can also share their information secretly through the chat. This share function allows reliable information to be conveyed. The number of times information can be shared is customizable and we also have a Double Agent mode where players can be allowed to purposely send false information once per game to confuse their enemies. As you can imagine, a lot of deceit is involved in this game, making for some serious, nerve-racking fun.

In the beginning, there are always more pacifists than exterminationists. This strength in numbers is the pacifist team's main advantage. The disadvantage is they start the game without knowing the allegiance of any other players, including the identity of their own teammates. In order for the pacifists to win, they have to remove both Bob and the exterminationist leader from the game by imprisonment or assassination. Both Bob and the exterminationist leader are revealed if imprisoned.

The exterminationists have the advantage of automatically learning their team mates as the game progresses (the speed at which this happens is, of course, customizable). So despite smaller numbers, the exterminationists have the ability to better coordinate their actions and eliminate other players. The goal of the exterminationists is 1) to remove Bob from the game and 2) get their leader elected to an office so he can execute an extermination of the imprisoned aliens.

Comparison of advantages, disadvantages, victory goals.
Comparison of advantages, disadvantages, victory goals.

When the exterminationist leader is elected Marshall, a direct extermination can be attempted by implanting a computer virus in the life support system of the alien prison (this is done in place of one referendum choice). When the exterminationist leader is elected Captain, he/she has the opportunity to taint one of the proposals passed down to the Marshall with the same computer virus. If the Marshall unwittingly chooses to execute the tainted proposal, the alien prisoners will be killed.

Exterminationist victory actions.
Exterminationist victory actions.

To counter the computer virus, a pacifist can propose to do a virus scan or vaccination as referendums. A virus scan destroys any virus attempted that round while vaccination prevents any virus from activating in the next. These two actions are vital for helping the pacifists keep the upper hand.

Pacifist defense actions.

Team Bob is the most isolated. Bob is always alone but also the most powerful character in the game. Each round, he can mind-read one other player who is not an officer, learning everything about them: profession, voting history, chat history, and allegiance (all of this can be customized in the Depth of Read settings).

In game, Bob takes on the form of a human pacifist and will appear as one whenever investigated using a referendum. Only special powers, items, and imprisonment can reveal him. Bob’s goal is to be elected to office and use a computer virus of his own to destroy the human’s oxygen supply, forcing them to leave his planet. The rules for how this can be done are the same as for the extermination leader: 1) Bob can directly implant the virus as Marshall or 2) taint proposal as Captain.

As a bonus, Bob can also be given the ability to turn other players mad after mind-reading (this is an important balance in larger groups). There are two levels of madness: Confusion and Silence. In the former, the mind-read player is unable to participate in votes for one round. In the latter, the mind-reading is lethal, removing the player from the game completely. All of these settings can be tweaked in a variety of ways to make Bob more powerful and resilient.

Each player (including Bob) is randomly assigned to have a profession with a special power. These powers allow players to perform a wide range of special actions, including: stealing another player's votes, sending another player to prison, reviving a player who has been killed, or even hacking into another player's chat history. The professions are fully customizable so you can choose which professions are available and there is even a Finger of Fate mode where players can choose their profession instead of having it assigned randomly.

Here are some samples of the 20 different professions we have designed:

Professions.
Professions.

Items grant special powers that give the user a big advantage during gameplay. A variety of items are available, including DNA scanners, stealth modules, recombinase, and even dreamcatchers. These items allow players to scan for alien DNA, hack another player's voting history, and even change professions in the middle of a game, gaining bonus powers.

Items.
Items.

The best thing about our game is that everything is customizable. We highly recommend our Vanilla Settings and are sure you will have a great time with them but we also want to give you the chance to make this game truly yours. Each group is different and changes in group size sometimes require some rebalancing so everything stays fair. Is Bob getting caught too easily? Then rebalance him with our Read & Command mode so he can control the votes of the player he is mind-reading. Want to make the Captain more powerful? Then tweak the Proposal Results option so only the Captain can see who proposed what referendum. Still not enough? Then give her the Power of Pardons so she can spare players who have been condemned to death or imprisonment by the Marshall.

Bottom line is: we know you will have a great time!

Risks and challenges

There are currently four members in our team: three programmers and an artist. All of us have full-time jobs elsewhere so this has been a side project until now. We would really like to take this to the next level by quitting our jobs and committing to this for real. That's why we are asking for this Kickstarter. In case this doesn't work out, we don't want to get in trouble with our current employers so please understand if we don't identify ourselves yet. We really hope you like our game :)

If we can make this work, we have even more games coming! Our next one would be a social deduction murder mystery that also contains multiple characters, items, new mechanics, full customization, and much more. Hope you give us a hand.
