About

Welcome and thank you for your interest in this biography project.

MORITZ GROSSMANN GLASHÜTTE I/SA is a young brand that pays tribute to a great name, to one of the most fascinating figures in the history of German horology. Carl Moritz Grossmann is considered to be a visionary among the most eminent watchmakers, and a major contributor to the genesis of the watchmaking industry in Glashütte. Known for his ingenuity and multiple talents, he established his own mechanical workshop in 1854.

It soon evolved to become a highly respected watchmaking manufacture. This is where trailblazing components for precision measuring instruments and signature timepieces were crafted. Grossmann was commitment to various political and social causes as well. In 1878, he initiated, conceived, and established the German School of Watchmaking in Glashütte, and also taught mathematics and languages there. The company was liquidated after his sudden death in 1885. Initially, the name Carl Moritz Grossmann faded away but lived on nonetheless by virtue of his publications, the respect he earned for his achievements in horology, his merits for the town of Glashütte, and not least his pendulum clocks, pocket watches and chronometers that today are coveted collector’s items.

It was not until 2008, with the establishment of our company, that Carl Moritz Grossmann’s spiritual legacy was revived. Within a span of only ten years, a manufacture emerged with a collection of watches that bear the name Moritz Grossmann again. Leveraging Grossmann’s legendary pioneering spirit with traditional craftsmanship and modern technology, the company develops and crafts high-end mechanical timepieces inspired by the heritage of pure watchmaking artistry since 1854.

The BENU Tourbillon with the flying three-minute tourbillon and the stop-seconds hair brush, the mechanical date ensemble of the ATUM Date, and the Grossmann strap winder introduced with the TEFNUT Twist are but three examples of the team’s passion and ingenuity. The manually sculpted hands, individually conceived for each model family, are a rare hallmark.

The biography

Carl Moritz Grossmann was an individual who is undoubtedly worth rediscovering. The biography project has captivated us since the beginning of the new era. But initially, it seemed to be quite an impossible venture. Precious information had been lost or preserved only in fragments. It only proved possible to stitch certain timeline segments together again. Many details could not be scientifically corroborated and need to be reviewed, others even corrected. We are committed to closing these gaps with thorough factfinding.

With intensive research and analysis, we were able to learn more about his life. Sources in the German Watch Museum and documents from public archives suggest that his life and work are even more interesting and kaleidoscopic than first impressions led us to assume. By compiling a scientifically backed biography, we want to portray Carl Moritz Grossmann in the secular, political, social, and economic context of his era.
