About

Between Brooklyn and Queens, there is a unique opportunity to improve pedestrian transit, create green spaces, and connect the communities of Long Island City and Greenpoint into a new neighborhood we call LongPoint.

Help us bridge the gap and build NYC's first floating wood bridge: Timber Bridge at LongPoint Corridor!

For the past few years, we’ve been working on the Timber Bridge, a floating passageway made of wood. This bridge is a part of a larger proposal, the LongPoint Corridor, which will cross over Newtown Creek and the LIRR to connect Manhattan Ave. and Vernon Blvd.

There are 5 components to the LongPoint Corridor:

  • 1  The Brooklyn Landing
  • 2  Timber Bridge
  • 3  Queens Landing
  • 4  LIRR Crossing
  • 5  Vernon Landing

 1  Brooklyn Landing

 2  Timber Bridge

 3  Queens Landing

History

The Vernon Avenue Bridge crossed Newton Creek until 1954 when it was demolished to make way for the construction of the Pulaski Bridge. The two open spaces on either side of the creek - Manhattan Ave. Park (Brooklyn) and an ad hoc parking lot (Queens) - serve as reminders of the former bridge. Here we see an opportunity to revitalize an underused area in a way that benefits both the community and the environment.

The Problem

With populations growing exponentially in Long Island City and Greenpoint, now is the critical time to seize a long missed opportunity to provide transportation options and jump-start community engagement before the need becomes too overwhelming. In addition to creating a pedestrian lane and a separate bike lane, the Longpoint Corridor would grant easier access to both the G train and 7 train.

The Solution

ACCESSIBILITY

While the Pulaski bridge is a functional solution for connecting Brooklyn and Queens, it is a large bridge utilized mostly by multi-lane traffic. The LongPoint Corridor would provide a more pleasant route for pedestrians and bikers. This map visualizes the current commute of a pedestrian across the Pulaski Bridge, from point A to B. The LongPoint Corridor would reduce this walk from a 12 min walk to a 2 min walk and provide an accessible route for all people.

PRESERVATION

The LongPoint Corridor will also provide a series of new green spaces for the neighboring communities, more access points to the elusive New York waterfront and incentive to preserve the local wildlife and vegetation.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Timber Bridge design consists of a floating platform and a pivoting mechanism that allows the bridge to open for larger vessels. Small vessels such as kayaks and sail boats will be able to pass under at any time. The platform will rise and fall with the tide, protecting the bridge from flooding, while propulsion pontoons will help stabilize the structure.

Step By Step

You might be thinking, “This is a massive undertaking!” Public spaces are complex, organic things, but we will be taking it one step at a time. The first step will focus on the Timber Bridge

What we need now is the support from people like you, in NY and elsewhere, who believe in the power of public green spaces to enhance communities. With enough support, we can gain political traction and can make the LongPoint Corridor a reality!

We are raising $50,000 for further feasibility research and a light installation of the Timber Bridge which we will unveil at a promotional community event in the Fall of 2018.

Light Installation

The Light Installation will provide an opportunity for New Yorkers to come out and truly envision the Timber Bridge at its actual location.

Risks and challenges

The Timber Bridge at LongPoint Corridor is a big project. Kickstarter funding however is for additional studies and to further promote the idea with a light installation on site. The risks and challenges we see for with the light installation are:

Design and Engineering - Original design ideas always evolve as new challenges arise. Our team overcomes design issues all the time though and are confident we will be able to adjust our deisng s

Permitting and Approvals - Permits and Approvals in NYC/NYS are a very complicated process and not always guaranteed. We are working to secure everything we can to make sure our light installation will happen as planned. If there are any delays or changes, we will keep supporters in the loop as we work towards our goal.
