I learned to crochet about six years ago, and about two years ago I started to create my own designs.  I was encouraged by Sam from Unbelievawool to turn these into patterns, and together we collaborated on a Shawl Club - Sam dyed the yarn and I had the challenge of trying to create simple, accessible shawl patterns that could be created from a single skein of yarn (with the occasional addition of a mini skein, or some beads!).  We have run this successfully over the last two years and I now have a bank of individual patterns that have been homemade.

I have now been asked if I would consider creating a book from the patterns that I have developed - something professionally photographed and produced which represents the most popular and varied patterns that I have created.  And so the idea for a 'Best of Shawl Club' book began and has been taking shape over the last year or so.  The plan is to commission some bespoke photography to show off the patterns and techniques effectively, and to pull together the most popular shawls into a single published collection.  This will then be printed, and launched in May at Wool@J13.

The kickstarter is a chance for you to get your hands on a copy of the book ahead of the official launch.  I will sign the books, and I have a few goodies for you as a thank you.  I have also offered the chance for a few workshops as this is something I have been asked about in the past.  I love to teach people how to create the shawls and I would be delighted to meet you and help you to create something truly beautiful.

So everything is in place, I just need your support now to see if we can get this off of the ground.  Thank you so much for taking the time to look at this page, and I hope that you will consider supporting me.

Risks and challenges

This project has limited risks associated with it as the patterns are already written. The main jobs left to do are the photography (I have a fantastic local photographer lined up for the work) and typesetting the book ready for printing. I have allowed some good contingency time as I work full time, and so this is a project I have to fit in around my day-to-day commitments. However, I am also being mentored through this process by an experienced author of these types of books and she is making sure I get this right and I allow reasonable time to get the work done. All being well the book should be ready in April, which is when I would plan to do the mailing and begin to contact donors about workshops etc. For the workshops, it is worth noting that I have a DBS enhanced disclosure as part of my day job, and I may also bring someone with me to assist if needed.
