‘He Was and Is and Is to Come’ is a poem written by Stef Liston, who helps to lead Revelation Church in Camden, and illustrated by Dan Jones, who is part of King’s Community Church in Norwich and writes and illustrates Anchor Lines. We are raising funds to illustrate the entire poem and print it as a beautiful softcover, 60 plus page book, 20x21cm in size. If we can raise £18,500, we will make a video of the complete illustrated poem - read on for more details.
The poem was originally written and read by Stef Liston, as a spoken word sermon at a Christian festival called Newday, to a gathering of approximately 6,000 young people - but it seemed that the scope of the poem could easily go further, that it had a potential reach beyond just the moment.
This got a few people thinking, one of them being illustrator Dan Jones, who secretly sharpened his cyber-pencils and got drawing. Dan then sent Stef an illustrated draft of one of the verses which took Stef by surprise, but he loved it! So they got talking and wondered what it might look like to produce the poem as a fully illustrated book that would be a source of instruction, inspiration and blessing to people up and down the nation.
So here we are! Dan’s drawing style is a wonderful combination of innocence and poignancy and so we feel like we’ve come up with an idea that would communicate deep and timeless Gospel truth in a very visually captivating and somehow comforting way for people of all ages.
Kickstarter is a pre-order service for getting creative projects off the ground. From now until 20 June 2016, you can make a pledge on Kickstarter in return for a copy of the book when it is printed in October (in addition to various other rewards).
If we raise more money than we’re asking for, that means that we can print a larger run of books, and more people get a copy in their hands. If we raise enough, we will also be able to produce some additional content - more on that below.
As you can see, there are a number of ways to pledge your support. The very minimum you will get in return is a hard copy of the finished book - but there are various other rewards on offer, from extra copies to custom illustrations. Whatever you choose, every backer will be helping to bring this book to life.
If you would like to order a larger number of books than we have listed, please get in touch and we can work out prices for volume and shipping.
Dan has illustrated 3 out of 15 verses already, and we have been given some funding to cover the costs of illustrating the rest. We are now looking for funding to cover the cost of printing and shipping the books themselves.
When will the books be printed?
If the project goes ahead, we are aiming for an October 2016 delivery date. Dan will illustrate the remaining verses during July and August, with the book being finalised and printed towards the end of September. We’ve allowed a little extra time to try and ensure that the books are in our backers’ hands by October this year. We’ll make every effort to deliver the books on time - in the event of any unforeseen delays, we will of course keep you updated.
We had the assistance of some talented friends - Luke Ellis, Tom Povey and Andy Kyte - in putting together the video and backing music for verse 1. We would love to extend that to the full poem, and if this project raises sufficient funds, that’s just what we’ll do.
Our minimum funding target covers the cost of the book and ensures it will get printed. However, if the funding for the book reaches £18,500, we are also committed to producing a narrated video of the entire poem - including composing backing music for the full piece. Let's do it!
If you'd like to help us reach that goal, why not consider going for a pledge that includes the digital edition of the book as well as a hard copy. If the project really takes off and we raise over £30,000, we will send out a DVD of the finished video to anyone whose pledge included a digital edition of the book. If you're based outside of the UK, we will need to charge a little extra at the time of shipping to cover the extra cost to ship a DVD to you.
Please note that DVDs won't be sent out until early 2017, as we will need time for our video team to finalise the animation and music, and then to print and send copies out.
Risks and challenges
Stef has been published before, but self publishing will be a new experience for both of us. We've been careful with the budgeting to ensure we can deliver on everything we've promised, and will be using local printers to make sure we're satisfied with the quality of the finished book. Dan is used to producing quality artwork to deadline, and has time marked out to get the book completed ahead of the print date.
We will of course approach this project with the honesty, integrity and passion that you would expect from us.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
