About this project
Every glass artist is always searching for new information, new techniques, and new discoveries that will ignite their own creativity. All of that can found in this book.
The book project title, ‘Sand to Glass’, are perfect words to describe David Alcala’s artistic journey, one that has taken him from a world-renown sand artist to whom many in the glass art community feel is poised to change the direction of glass fusion for years to come.
David says, “Even though I’m a self-taught sand artist and created more than 50,000 works of art over the past 30 years, it has been pretty much a single journey. Then 10 years ago, I was introduced to glass frit and glass fusing, and that was my ‘discovery of fire’ moment. It was then that I realized that many of my sand art techniques could now apply to glass fusion, it was a perfect transition from sand to glass.”
Below are a few questions that may be on your mind.
What are others saying about your new fusing process? Since introducing my fusing techniques to a few leaders in the glass industry, and after just teaching a select hand full of classes around the country, the response has been overwhelming to say the least. You can also imagine my surprise to learn that no one else in all the years of fusing has introduced such techniques like mine to the glass world.
Why the book and what can one expect from it?
As a glass artist I now find myself part of a community of creative and talented glass artists, who pride themselves on sharing information that will benefit everyone, so at this point in my life and career, I’ve decided that I can now do the same. Besides I would love to see what happens when these techniques are placed in other creative hands, and I truly feel this is just the tip of the iceberg.
Through the book titled, “SAND TO GLASS - Changing Directions in Glass Fusion”, I will share some amazing and creative discoveries, techniques and applications that many in the fusing community consider to be extremely innovative if not revolutionary. This book will be informative and of professional quality, filled with beautiful photos and samples, but most importantly, it is my hope that it will inspire you to greater possibilities.
In the end, my goal is to introduce you to new techniques and mediums that are simple, fun and designed to stimulate your own unique imagination so that you can place your own creative stamp on this whole process. In return I only ask that you pass it on to our next generation of glass artists.
Where does the pledge money go and what do you get in return? First of all, please note and rest assured that your pledge transaction will not be processed until the project goal is fully funded by the deadline date.
Moneys for this project will go towards funding to self-publish the book and print 1,000 First Edition copies.
Costs include printing, publishing, photography, editing, and shipping. Through the involvement of ‘Kickstarter’ and yourself, I have offered different levels of generous rewards that work for everyone creating a win-win scenario. Being a part of this project, you will have the satisfaction and enjoyment in knowing that you have played an important role in opening doors to new and innovative ideas. I hope and believe that this project will meet and may even surpass the financial goal I’ve laid out which means reaching more artists.
When can I expect the book?
Self-publishing is the fastest way to get the book into your hands. This means that your pledge guarantees that you can be one of the first glass artist, instructor or studio to put these unique applications to use. My goal is have these books printed and in your hands by the first part of March 2012. I am already working hard at writing and producing work for the book, so that you will receive your book as soon as it is printed and released.

I'm glad to support your Kickstarter fund raising project. I've got a feeling that this new technological wrinkle of yours, the "Flexi-Glass" will bring many additional changes to the glass art field, and to kiln-formed glass in particular. I can remember when Dan & Boyce dared to begin production of fusing friendly glass many years ago, and I suspect your contributions may well open up similar horizons for glass folks 'round the world.
