I’ve launched a crusade, a Crusade for Collecting.
As a photographer, curator, collector and owner of Jennifer Schwartz Gallery in Atlanta, I am ready to bring art to the people (that’s you).
Tell me about this Crusade. . .
Culturally, we are in our prime. We have sophisticated tastes and crave unique experiences. We are on-trend, we are curious, we are seekers.
And yet, we don’t buy art. We don’t patronize galleries and museums like we used to, and we don’t always give artists the support they deserve. While we may think art is interesting and to be valued, we’re not collecting art any more, which is why I was inspired to start a Crusade for Collecting. I want to help cultivate a new crop of art collectors and make collecting cool.
Because, it is cool. Simply falling in love with an original piece of art and buying it – that is collecting. It doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars or even make a huge dent in your paycheck. It’s about the connection. It’s about looking at something and having an emotional response. Feeling something. And then purchasing that piece and hanging it on your wall and living with it. Your home becomes personal, your walls start to describe you, and everywhere you look you see something you love.
That is collecting. And that is beyond cool.
So what am I going to do about it?
Well, if we’re talking Crusade, then clearly I’ve got to get out there. Not in a medieval military sort of way. For me, it’s all of the passion without the violence and gore. Think of it as a call to arms for art.
So I decided to take this show on the road. I am going to go on a ten-week, ten-city tour in a little over a year where I do pop-up shows featuring the work of incredible emerging photographers from across the country that are part of The Ten.
What is The Ten, you ask?
A highly curated monthly online exhibit of ten photographic images I launched to support my overall mission to bring affordable art to the people, promote collecting, and support emerging photographers. The uniqueness of The Ten comes from its curation and its exclusivity. Each image is available at a 13×19 size in an edition of 25 for $250.
Here’s the really cool part: Images on The Ten cannot be sold in any other size in any other location. Once an image has been included in The Ten, it must be retired from sale. The only opportunity to purchase that image is on the website for The Ten, and once 25 are sold, it is sold out forever. For more on The Ten visit www.thetenphoto.com or catch up with me in one of the ten cities that will be part of the Crusade.
Now back to the Crusade:
The first item to tackle on my Crusade agenda is getting proper wheels for this art-infused journey. With your support, I am going to get a van and trick it out with storage racks for framed art and flat files. This will be my home away from home during the Crusade, which makes it supremely easy to roll into a city and show work right out of the van, giving people from far and wide the opportunity to connect with artists, photography and to bring art home with them. A different photographer will travel with me on each leg of the trip. We’ll be talking photography, live blogging, creating podcasts and Blair Witch style video. You will be able to follow us from city to city, and I do hope you’ll visit.
In the simplest of terms:
I want to start a movement, spark a fire.
I just need the wheels.
Art is awesome. Heart art.
