Why Down Syndrome?
The real story begins a little over three years ago, when my son, Ollie, was born with two separate heart defects and Down syndrome (Trisomy 21). At just 10 days old he survived his first open heart surgery to repair a coarctated (pinched) aortic arch. A year later he would undergo two more open heart surgeries that would lead to the repair of his AV canal defect.
My son's strength through these experiences along with the mountains of additional minor procedures and appointments he attends on a regular basis inspired me. I wanted to use both my enthusiasm for comic books and love for my son to create a story that celebrated my child's amazing story, while also creating a superhero who he and others with Down syndrome could identify with.
Metaphase is an all-ages 70+ page graphic novel to be published by Alterna Comics written by myself with artwork by Kelly Williams. It quite literally has it's roots in my son's real life story, but with a superhero twist. Lash, Ollie's dad in the story, is a superhero on par with the likes of Superman. His life is changed when he has a son with all the physical vulnerabilities that come along with having heart defects and Down syndrome. As Ollie gets older he becomes tired of his dad's overprotection and unwillingness to include him in his superhero adventures. Ollie has lived his life listening to the world tell him he will be limited in what he can do, with the added frustration of comparing to a dad with unlimited ability. Fueled by his desire to be "super" Ollie turns to Meta-Makers, a company that claims it can give anyone powers through chromosome tampering. However, this decision may lead directly to the downfall of the greatest hero of all time... Ollie's dad!
While a big part of this book is high-flying fun, I also hope to show the world that having Down syndrome isn't about limits. Individuals with Down syndrome can do things we can AND can't do, which includes being a crazy cool superhero!
Why We Need Your Money
Making comic books is an expensive business, and unfortunately we're not rich. The artist and letterer need to be paid for their time and work on the book, and both Kelly (artist) and Peter (letterer) are taking far below their usual rate. To ensure that this book has it's best chance to reach successful funding, NONE of the money raised will go to me for the writing. The very minimum amount needed to bring this to print in black and white, rounded down, is $6000. There will be stretch goals announced for color pending we reach our initial funding target. Here's where the money is going:
- $2261 - Art and Lettering
- $2000 - B&W print run of 1000 books
- $1200 - Shipping and fulfilling of rewards
- $546 - Kickstarter and Amazon Fees (10% of total raised)
You'll notice on the right side of your screen, a list of various pledge options for you to choose from. THIS IS NOT A DONATION. Depending on how high you pledge, you'll get something out of it! For instance...
- PDF of the comic: Digital copy for you to download and read on your digital device!
- Printed book: The regular cover features art by the book's artist, Kelly Williams!
- KICKSTARTER EXCLUSIVE COVER: A cover by the legendary Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle artist Jim Lawson (creator of the The Rat King character)!
- High Five Signed Editions: My son, the inspiration for the book, will give you a high five in the form of his handprint in your copy of the book! Oh yeah, and Kelly and I will sign it too.
- Original Artwork: Artist friends of Kelly and I have contributed original pin-ups to be included in the book! You could own the ORIGINALS if you act fast!
- JIM LAWSON and KELLY WILLIAMS original cover art: Believe me when I say these are hard to let go of. Two lucky backers will receive the original art for either the regular or Kickstarter exclusive cover! I'll try not to cry on it when I pack them up for shipping. Also available as a print!

Here's some of the original pinup artwork that are available as rewards! All original artwork will come as black and white, and may or may not be in color in the final edition of the book. You can get these pinups in the limited PRINT MANIAC tier level (only 12 spots!) along with prints of the standard and special edition covers of the book by Kelly and Jim. So far that's 5 total prints with more on the way! I'll be posting updates as more become available. Click the artwork below to be taken to the individual artist's webpage.
Special thanks to my sis-in-law, Melissa Tagg, for putting the project video together! Melissa is the author of the book Made to Last. Visit her website and check out her stuff!
Risks and challenges
The projected completion date is our best estimation. While the book is written, the artwork cannot be finished until the successful completion of this Kickstarter campaign. Once that happens, our goal is to have it ready to send to backers by August 2014. Should unforeseen circumstances or delays occur, we are still committed to seeing this project through to completion and will provide updates to keep our backers aware of any changes.
Should I be kidnapped by aliens or spontaneously combust, I'll leave management of this project to my wife, Amy, who will continue to work with Kelly until the book is finished!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
