What is a prototype?

A prototype is a preliminary model of something. Projects that offer physical products need to show backers documentation of a working prototype. This gallery features photos, videos, and other visual documentation that will give backers a sense of what’s been accomplished so far and what’s left to do. Though the development process can vary for each project, these are the stages we typically see:

Proof of Concept

Explorations that test ideas and functionality.

Functional Prototype

Demonstrates the functionality of the final product, but looks different.

Appearance Prototype

Looks like the final product, but is not functional.

Design Prototype

Appearance and function match the final product, but is made with different manufacturing methods.

About

Big 3D printing needs a lot of time.

But who wants to wait days or weeks for his new furniture or other big designs?

Up to 10 times faster printing with SIDL Hotendblock HE80.

Trying to print big components on FDM printers with high speed and bigger nozzles in combination with default heater cartridges leads to problems: the required extrusion output of about 15mm³/s generates no suitable printing results or results in blocking the extruder. This happens because the temperature in the hotendblock is not stable due to less power on the heating cartridge.

The HE80 guaranties stable temperatures also on fast printing with up to 3mm nozzles. In comparison to standard solutions 10 times faster printing speed can be achieved with HE80.

Big prints, on big printers, need greater speed in combination with larger nozzles and high quality filaments for acceptable printing times. Printing with high speed, bigger nozzles and standard hotends/heater cartridge causes termperature drop on heater cartridge when more than 15mm³/s are extruded. This results in unpleasant or unusable prints and blocked extruders.

Because of  the possibility to assemble two 40W heater cartridges in parallel mode the HE80 guarantees stability of temperature even on fast prints with big nozzles. In comparison to standard extruder – heater cartridge – nozzle combinations printing can be 10 times faster with this heater block. (Have a look on the SIDL HE80 print speed diagram above).

Therefore big objects can be printed in suitable times.

Up to now measured extrusion (SIDL HE80 on BQ DDG extruder and high quality filament on our SIDL BIG BOX750.

Suitable powersupply presumed the parallel wired heater cartridges in the HE80 hotend block are compatible with RAMPS 1.4 and other boards. (This is no problem for the thyristor on RAMPS board - other boards not tested.)

The HE80 heater block is fitted with a contiuous M6 thread, this leads to compatiblity with a lot of extruders, hotends and nozzles.
The heater block can be screwed on compatible heatbreaks with M6 thread.

This hotend was tested on BQ extruder, DDG extruder Hephestos2, Prusa extruder, E3D Heatbreak and Heatsink.

The nozzles must be compatible with E3D Volcano (the long one).

Available and tested nozzles:

                0,60mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)
                0,80mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)
                1,00mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)
                1,20mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)

During campaign we work to develop the following nozzles:

                1,50mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)
                1,75mm (in 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm)
                2,00mm (2.85 mm)
                3,00mm (2.85 mm)
               

The resistor should be a thermistor cartridge, for example Semitec 104GT thermistor with a 3mm diameter and 17,5 mm maximum length. Heater cartridges with 30W or 40W can be used. You need a total of 60/80W.

At this point the hotend block is produced by hand which takes a lot of time and money. It is our goal to start mechanical production to produce faster and reduce the costs.

Alll test prints are printed on  our SIDL BIGBOX 750 with BQ DDG extruder and SIDL HE80 hotend.This printer is customizable in size up to 2 meters. This really big printer will be available at kickstarter after this campaign. For more information please visit our website www.bigprinting.de

 

Risks and challenges

There are no risks that come with completing our project because it is an already working product. We need feedback from our future customers to optimize the product for even faster and high quality printing.
