EOE Orbis Presents Black Tree Production
A harsh, icy wind blew through the trees but Commander Kuznetsov didn’t allow that to slow him down as he skied through the forest. Just for a moment, he wished that he had his racing skis from when he was a boy in St. Petersburg but for now, Army skis would have to suffice. His Elite Ski Force surrounded him as they raced toward the top of the ridge, Sokolov ahead on point watching for German stragglers from their last melee. The Germans were not as strong as they had anticipated and the enemy line had taken heavy losses. The Germans were down but they weren’t surrendering. Not yet.
Intelligence reports showed that Matthäus Hetzenauer, the German sniper, was trapped on the ridge, wounded from the last barrage of artillery fire they had sent into the heart of the German forces. Rumoured to be a better sniper than even Ilyin or Sidorenko, that one man was their mission and a capture or confirmed kill would bring Kuznetsov and his men victory and rewards. First, though, they would have to find him and Kuznetsov signalled for his radioman. As Popov swiftly skied to his side, radio in hand, a single shot took him dead off his skis and slammed him into a tree, the radio flying off into the snow. The forest was suddenly ablaze with gunfire and his men quickly skied to his side, taking up defensive positions around him as they returned fire.
“Tonight is not our night to die,” Kuznetsov shouted to his men. “For Motherland! For Stalin! Urah!!”
