THE AUSTIN CHRONICLE <3S US:

Check it out!

_____________________________________

How much time did you spend last week trying to decipher the “hey ;)” sent by some rando you met at 2am on Sixth Street? How long did you spend debating whether “hey” or “heyy” is a more appropriately casual reply?

What if the stakes had been higher? What if he wasn’t a rando, but a dreamy movie star who spouts sensitive memes and routinely saves women from hit-and-run accidents?

What if he was RYAN GOSLING?

You’d need help from trusted friends. You’d need to confer. And when you strategized, you’d need to bring your A-game.

TEXTING WITH GOSLING is a ten-episode webseries created by four women in UT Austin’s graduate screenwriting program, set and shot in Austin, TX.

Each episode follows Felix as she and her housemates craft a careful response to Gosling’s texts by exploring all the various strategies and phenomena of texting—from winkys to double texts to the ever-cringeworthy drunk text.

The strength of this series comes from the amazing women who created it. We boast an all-female writing staff, all-female directors, an all-female cast, and a predominately female crew of smart, talented, and incredibly funny women who seek to tell film stories for and about women.

WRITERS:

Jessica Chou is a 26 year old who, after graduating with an MFA in Creative Writing at UMSL, realized that screenwriting was the better fit. Now she’s happily installed in UT’s MFA Screenwriting Program where she nerds out about aliens, zombies, and superheroes all day.

Donna Hull, a proud Texan, graduated from the University of Southern California with a BA from the School of Cinematic Arts in Film and Television Production. After graduation she worked two years as associate producer for the LA Femme Film Festival, an assistant at the Oprah Winfrey Network during it’s historic launch, and as Unit Production Manager for the webseries MILK + HONEY executive produced by Idris Elba.

Rachel Kempf was the winner of the 2011 NexTV Writing & Pitch Competition and the 2011 NYC Midnight Short Screenplay Competition. In addition to her screenwriting endeavors, her work has appeared in Random House’s essay anthology TWENTYSOMETHING ESSAYS BY TWENTYSOMETHING AUTHORS, and various one-act play and short film festivals across the U.S. and internationally.

Chelsea Mahoney is a 22 year old womanchild with hoarding tendencies. During her time at SUNY Oswego she wrote a handful of produced stage plays, and won various regional writing contests. She’s in a long-term relationship with her Netflix Instant Queue.

FEATURED DIRECTOR:

Jing Yang is an Austin-based director, photographer, mother, swing dancer and Ryan Gosling admirer. Jing’s films have screened at many festivals and won awards, including Austin Film Festival, Lone Star Film Festival, Sarasota Film Festival, Jump Cut Film Festival, and Women in Film and TV International Showcase. Jing’s short documentary Tea House (2010) was selected as the judges’ favorite at the 2011 10 Under 10 Film Festival. Her narrative short film Butterfly (2012) won The Student Filmmaker Award at the 2012 Chick Flicks Festival. Her narrative short comedy My Super Valentine (2013) won Project of the Week on IndieWIRE in February 2013. It also won the Student Filmmaker Award at the 2013 Chick Flicks Festival, the Audience Award at Black Warrior Film Festival 2014, and was aired on The Longhorn Network. Jing's most recently co-directed film, The Visit (2014), was selected for The Short Film Corner at Cannes International Film Festival.

ACTORS:

Holly Barnett (Ina) is a singer, songwriter, and film/stage actress who loves to run, salsa, and swing dance. She has been in numerous stage productions, and featured in nationwide commercial for Verizon.

Before moving to Austin 8 years ago, Stacey Glazer (Granny Panties)toured the country for a decade doing theatre. She is a founding member of The City Theatre Company and active at Studio E where she takes acting classes. Stacey lives with her 2 cats, Hagrid and eleanor, and her husband Marc, whom recently married. She planned and executed a complete Jewish wedding in three weeks to fulfill the wish of her dying father. Stacey is represented by Acclaim Talent.

Claire Grasso (Felix) is a local stage and film actress, and an Acting Company Member of Austin Playhouse. Recent stage credits include the world-premiere of Roaring (Riley), The Liar (Isabelle/Sabine), Man of La Mancha (Antonia), and Lady Windermere's Fan (Lady Windermere), and A Room With a View (Lucy Honeychurch-Austin Critic's Table Best Leading Actor nomination) at Austin Playhouse, and It's a Wonderful Life: Live Radio Show (Violet, Zuzu, others) at Penfold Theatre. Hailley Lauren (Daisy) is a graduate of the dance department from the High School of the Performing Arts in NYC and she received her BFA in Dance Performance from Towson University. Throughout her dance career she has integrated dramatic characters into her stage performances which allowed her to deepen her emotional range. She has returned to her love of acting with the abandonment of a dancer, prepared for a career in film.

PROJECT MENTOR:

Cindy McCreery is a graduate of the Walt Disney/ABC Feature Writing Fellowship program. She has sold feature projects to New Line Cinema, Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures, Nickelodeon, National Geographic Films, Warner Brothers, and MGM. She has also optioned projects to several production companies including Radar Pictures, Mike Tollin Productions, Unique Entertainment, and Broken Road Entertainment. She has taught screenwriting at UC Santa Barbara and for the UCLA Professional Program in Screenwriting. She often saves us from emotional meltdowns in her office.

We are currently in pre-production and set to shoot in June.

You can help us make our goal of $4,000, which will be used for:

  • Equipment
  • Food (Craft, Lunch, Dinner)
  • Location
  • Production Design
  • Sound Design
  • Costumes
  • Props

With your donations, we can make this project a reality.

Our stretch goal of $6000 can help us get our work into festivals and allow us to pay our hardworking crewmembers.

PS: Unfortunately, Ryan Gosling is not affiliated in any way with this project (if he was, we’d cease to be rational, coherent human beings).

Risks and challenges

We might face scheduling issues, due to the fact that we are all MFA students with individual responsibilities and projects. We will handle this by sacrificing personal time and moving around our schedules as best as we can to pursue this project.

Ever heard of the phrase "too many cooks in the kitchen" ? In group projects like this, it is often a challenge. We will make sure to keep our priorities straight, make compromises and keep our end goal in mind.
